Not good at all
7 September 2006
After seeing this film last night, I went home feeling thankful that I didn't have to pay to see this film. I'm not sure what turned me off so much to it most: whether it was the inexplicable reasoning for certain actions, the reliance on sex, gore and profanity in place of real plot, or the headache inducing quality of the visuals. Any way you slice it, this film feels like it was an ill thought out attempt to turn a genuinely interesting idea into a film to rival others of the same type (the Transporter films, among others). Perhaps if those behind the making of the film had spent more time writing interesting scenes and less planning how bloody, violent, and weird they could make things, this would have come out a whole hell of a lot better.

Sorry, but I thought it sucked

Warning: Spoilers
I had to watch this film for a film course I'm taking, and frankly, it confused and frustrated me. Not only is there 5 unexplained deaths, including that of the protagonist, but in 4 cases, the audience has no clue as to why they happen, what happens in each case afterward, or if the protagonists are actually sociopath's enough to ignore the deaths happening before their eyes. Throughout the film, I got the impression that the two lovers actually disliked one another, what with all the talk of breaking it off over little things, wanting to be with others, and the like. In the end, however, what bothered me the most was the sheer amount of contrived dialogue that was packed into each scene. Real people do not spout off pithy observations of the nature of society at every opportunity. Overall, not a good film.

Excellent Adaptation
29 December 2004
Even though it does not stick 100% to the novel, it stays true to the spirit and idea of the book. A light-hearted and well done adaptation of a well-loved book. Casting is brilliantly done, particularly for the parts of Long John Silver and Squire Trelawney. Locations are amazingly picturesque and make the watcher feel like they are in the right world for a swashbuckling pirate adventure, thereby making it all the better for them. For Disney's first foray into the arena of live-action films, it is extremely well done and hopefully they will be able to recapture their former glory and go back to the days of Treasure Island, Mary Poppins, and other live-action masterpieces of their illustrious past.
