Captain Marvel (2019)
Super Movie 10
Rewatch-ability 110% I'm not a marvel fan in general but love this movie...
I'm giving it a 10 not because it is perfect, but I am always left 100% satisfied after viewing it. For once we have a female lead who is not a super model, overly sexualised woman, who the average person can identify with and root for. She's sassy .
Maybe those who have a great attachment to the MCU are harder judges because they measure it and expect consistency to all previous avenger movies, but I appreciate Captain Marvel as a stand alone movie. I hope they don't bodge the next installment, I'm a bit worried after Endgame... but this movie is a gem!
A Promise (2013)
Rebecca Hall was riveting!
I was riveted by Hall's performance and character. It is the first movie I have viewed her in and have subsequently viewed some of her other movies - this being my favourite.
I'm surprised more people didn't enjoy the romance. I found the scenes intense and moving. Both the main characters were humble and deep in their feelings towards each other. I found the restraint displayed between them - despite the depth of their feeling - gave the characters a particular dignity - especially that of Charlotte. I loved the subtleties in her expressions which displayed a greater depth of love and emotion for Frederick than she was able to express.
I enjoyed the movie far better than the book. Unfortunately I found the ending a let down to the film overall; although there was a build up to their meeting it lacked the passion and feeling their eventual meeting could of and should have had. Still better than the book though; and I can appreciate that the build up during Frederick's absence showed the depth of feeling Charlotte had for Frederick despite the years of separation.
I rated the film a 10 despite its flaws because I disagree with the harsh general ratings and enjoyed it so much I had to watch my favourite scenes over and over.
Man of Steel (2013)
they sold the story short
I went to watch this movie with great expectations... I found that superman returns was disappointing because it lacked dialogue and character formation. I was excited that the man of steel was taking on the story from the beginning, and had the opportunity to make the viewer fall in love with the much loved characters all over again... The trailers were fantastic and I was hyped and expected great things. My highlight was the beginning- the character of Jor- El was admirable, a great beginning. But from there it was down hill. Unfortunately I found that not only was there a lack of character development and relationship development with the main characters; there were certain lines that were crossed that ought never be so - to be true to the characters and all they represent. Jonathan would never disregard the importance of life under any circumstance. Superman himself seemed to lack humility and wasn't as self assured in his values/ priorities. The action and collateral damage took away from supermans purpose in defending life. From a female perspective, the romance was an utter disappointment. The romance was totally a side show and is normally so essential to the superman story - you can't believe they could have fallen for each other in 3 or so uninspiring scenes! Overall and besides there was way to much action compared to dialogue - there was no chance to get to fall in love with the characters. They sold the story short for a few big action scenes.
