Downsizing (2017)
This movie will make you think. Matt Damon is not Mark Walberg
I wanted to write a review because I am thankful for those who also tried to persuade other to watch this film.
This movie will transport you to another reality, however make you see the fallacies within our own society. If your someone who doesn't like apocalyptic type films because of the realism it brings to the demise of the human race, you probably won't like this film either.
THIS IS NOT A COMEDY!
This could have been a great comedy and it certainly was marketed as one, but it is anything but that.
It is however a smart look at the importance of life and the meaning of ones self reflection. It follows through many aspects of society and the numerous perspectives of human existence.
This is your typical Alexander Payne film with a the slight feeling of a Terry Gilliam Plot line. The immersion is that of a Gullermo del Toro universe and I couldn't help but feel a taste of Spielberg. Pulling from the film styling's of AI and Bicentennial Man. The Zero Theorem also comes to mind and not just because Christopher Waltz is in it.
This film made me think. It reminded me of a War Drama or Bio pic where the protagonist goes into a foreign land with fear and doubt, only to find out that there similarities is what binds his love for the people they meet.
This is not a great film and there is no strong antagonist which may impact your ability to relate, but it deserves allot more than 5.5 stars. I did not regret watching it and I still feel it had so much more room to explore, but I guess what is not said or explained is also what makes this film great. It allows you to draw from your own experiences to create your own conclusions.
I think anyone who gives this film a go will come away from it with something quite remarkable and I hope it is as thought provoking for you as it has been for me.
Wilson (2017)
This Film has a Moral Compass
I only write reviews when I see a film that has a rating that does not represent the value of the film. If your looking for a good drama that delves into the fragility and fear we all face towards our own death and need towards self importance. Then this film is for you.
It is an emotional roller coaster ride if you enjoy the quirky nature of the events within the film. I don't feel Woody Harrison was a good fit for this role and he doesn't do it justice, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this film and only watched it because Woody was in it.
It has a few holes, but had this film been made in the 90's it would have received much acclaim. The only downside to this film is that many people will overlook it and that is unfortunate.
From the writer of Ghost World, this film is also directed by an incredibly under appreciated director. Yet to make a meaningless film this Director is only limited by his budget and still managers to deliver.
If you like dogs more than humans this film will also move you in ways that you may not be prepared for. You have been warned.
Also the only distraction I got throughout the entire film was when they visited the set of the "Orange Is The New Black" yellow block set from season 2. Often used in films, they always shoot it from the same angle. Very annoying.
It may also help that even though Jurassic Park came out when I was 9, Laura Dern is still a fox.
Watch this film. You will not regret it.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Great reprise of a classic Sci-Fi Disaster Film
After reading so many crappy comments I nearly didn't watch it. So glad I did.
I loved the original and this was an amazing reprise with enough cameo's to keep you very happy. A truly great sequel. Brent Spiner's Cameo alone is excuse enough to watch this film. The end even leaves it open for the possibility of another film with epic proportions. Don't watch the original in preparations as the formula and techniques used in this one are very similar.
Don't read any more comments, just watch it. I regret not seeing at the cinema.
They have substituted Will Smiths hero's journey with a white guy who flew with his son. There is a similar back story to this similar to that of Wesley Crusher and Tom Paris's accident at Starfleet Academy from Star Trek. That of which was stolen from one of Isaac Asimov books. It would have been great to have Will Smith reprising his role playing out that back story, But if you can get past the old switcharooney of the new generation taking on the main roles then you'll love it.
Search Party (2014)
This movie is worth watching.
I just wanna join the people who think this movie is awesome. If you like romantic comedies with ridiculous antics, this film will have you smiling and laughing in no time. It's better than any Sandler or Farrell movie recently released. Anyone who gives this less than a 7 star rating was probably not in the mood for this type of movie. Last night I watched The Hateful Eight and although I'm a massive Tarantino geek I actually enjoyed this more. I might be a little bias as I also love Silicon Valley, but we can't always be in the mood to watch a cinematic master peace. Sometimes we just want to be transported away to a place that doesn't take itself to seriously.
