Poor Things (2023)
When certain people walk put, its a winner!
Many of the reviews here say it all, especially those who are offended by sex, unpredictably and bizarre. This movie is a feast of jarring yet funny moments that completely enthralled. It snakes through the story easily with a lightness that delivers heavy blows. The stunning visuals flow over into each scene as Bella (Emma) journeys towards her destiny, revenge, of sorts.
The sex felt appropriate, funny and touched reality in unexpected ways. I kinda liked that some people felt uncomfortable and left this movie offended. Good work by all involved, a masterpiece of escapism.
Emma Stone, huge courage and talent, winner!
Last Christmas (2019)
A little gem if you are a bit sentimental
"Last Christmas" is a heartwarming and delightful film that seamlessly blends romance, humor, and a touch of holiday magic. Emilia Clarke's charismatic performance, coupled with the charming storyline and George Michael's timeless music, creates an enchanting experience. The film's message about love, forgiveness, and the joy of giving makes it a perfect choice for a feel-good holiday movie.
I'm liking this more than 'love actually' because I kinda love the underdog. People need to be nice to each other more and this movie captures why. Watch and let it all wash over you while you, sip a wine with the one you care for. Yes, I know 😎😎😎
Watchmen (2009)
Great story, characters and visually brilliant.
"Watchmen," released in 2009, is an extraordinary film that captivated audiences with its gritty storytelling, complex characters, and visually stunning portrayal of a dystopian world. This adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel successfully brought the comic's intricate narrative to life, pleasing both fans and newcomers alike. The film's exceptional cast, including Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson, delivered powerful performances that breathed life into their flawed and compelling characters. Director Zack Snyder's meticulous attention to detail, coupled with breathtaking cinematography and a haunting score, created a dark and immersive atmosphere that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. "Watchmen" remains a thought-provoking and visually striking masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences over a decade after its release.
The Nutcracker in 3D (2010)
Quirky delight
Old themes that are relevant today. I not a fan of musical movies mostly, but this one seems only to jar occasionally. The mix of cast is interesting and the story meanders nicely.
The bad reviews are definitely a bit off. Worth a watch for sure and maybe even more than once. Young Fanning is a natural.
The dolls house characters are oddly funny as are the rat faced Germans lol I suspect a few kids would struggle with the scary bits and the plot. It kind of stands out if the are a quirky movie fan. People who like the formulaic film format will most likely hate it.
There are a couple of flat spots, but these are good opportunities to poor another drink :)
Black Narcissus (1947)
Beware if you are a fan of religion
Many reviewers seem hostile to this movie due to its incompatibility with their view of the sanctity of the holy order.
It is a movie of its time and in that context, a solid performer. If you are a fan of movies from the period when the industry was finding its place in the world, this has to be on your list.
Grappling with conflict and yearning, a moral dilemma with a touch of 'I told you so...'
Drink wine and enjoy:)
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Great effects, beautifully rendered, teen trash
Even the 4K beauty could not forgive the dull and predictable plot. The flat spots are long and many. Shame. Jennifer Connelly is a secret gem. That underwear!
