Rake (2014)
It's A Man's Man's Man's World
People, wake up!!! Can't you see that Rake is here? In the past year of the new flood of boring, meaningless TV shows (with the exception of a few) Rake leaves a mark on your mind that refuses to go away. Greg Kinnear at a career best portrays Keegan Deane in a way you won't think it's Kee(as he is called) but you'd think of him as a part of Kinnear. The rest of the cast also does an amazing job but it's Greg's show through and through. You could never get tired of watching this show. It is imperfection at its best. This is not your average legal drama. This has a new case every week but the constant factor is Kee. Kee's women also make the show what it is. There is Miranda Otto who plays Kee's ex- wife. There is Tara Summers who plays his secretary. There is Bojana Novakovic who plays a prostitute Keegan is in love with. Necar Zadegan plays his one of his best friends who he fights cases against. This show is about raw masculinity which we all either totally loath or we love. This show's tagline should have been ''IT's A MAN's MAN's MAN's WORLD.'' Greg steals the show and then some. You will eagerly wait for the next week just to watch Rake. I absolutely love Rake. It is the reason I am a couch potato.
August: Osage County (2013)
Thank God It's Not My Family!!!
Doesn't everyone want to be in a family with Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Julianne Nicholson etc? But if this is how a family like that behaves then count me the heck out. This family is bat-sh*t cray-cray. But, that is the reason I love this movie. The way these actors poured themselves in their roles was remarkable. This movie should have definitely been nominated for Best Picture. Julianne Nicholson was the best actor in this all-star cast. It was hard to upstage Oscar winners like Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep but she did so with GUSTO. The way she said that she has no sisters and she's related to these people due to random selection of cells really showed her capability as an actor. She surely deserved a nomination. She did a much better job than Sally Hawkins. This is the best movie I've seen in a long-long time. John Wells does an amazing job. Julia Roberts is really good in one of her best roles in recent memory. The women surely steal the whole show. Though Meryl's acting has kind of become repetitive. The way she acted in this movie is the same way in which she acted in Iron Lady and Julie & Julia. Julianne Nicholson and Julia Roberts hold down the fort pretty well with commendable inputs from Ewan McGregor, Dermot Mulroney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin and Chris Cooper. Would've loved to see more of them. The background score gives a warm feeling to the movie. If you want to see this movie watch it for the crazy family that the Westons are. The personal insecurities residing in every person are highlighted in this piece of art. This movie brought out all the emotions inside of me. You should watch this movie for its family theme. I would watch this movie again and again. It's a worthwhile watch.
Nebraska (2013)
The Reason We Haven't Lost Faith
Nebraska is perfect. It is the reason we haven't lost faith in cinema. While the world is out there making films like Twilight and After Earth, Alexander Payne sticks to the classics. The true art of making gritty films about human relationships. Bruce Dern is so good in his portrayal of Woody Grant. Woody isn't a superhuman, he isn't even the perfect human. But in the end you love his flaws like your own. Nebraska is about how flawed we as humans are. It is about how we all need a reason to live and how we will hold on to that reason no matter what. The cinematography is outstanding. June Squibb is the sarcastic mother we all wish we had. This movie is a must watch as it is the closest a movie has come to being perfect (along with Silver Linings Playbook).
American Hustle (2013)
Haters Gonna Hate
How can someone hate this movie? It is so perfect. Scriptwriter Eric Singer originally named it American Bullshit. That should have been the title but other than that it is a ride you don't want to miss. AH is David O Rusell's masterpiece. It talks about how we con ourselves and others to survive. The comedy is just the icing on the cake. David is the definition of Actor's Director. What he can make his actors do is not something many directors are capable of. Now the actors (Drumroll Please) Christian Bale is sporting a potbelly and a weirdly elaborate comb-over. Was it over the top? Definitely yes. Was it necessary? Maybe,Maybe not. But that does give a persona to Irving Rosenfeld. This movie shows Christian's capability as an actor. Amy Adams is so good as Sydney Prosser. Her performance of a confused but determined conner was amazing. The fact that she was confused put the WOW factor in her performance. I am a Bradley Cooper loyalist. I love most of his movies. But AH, is unlike any of his other roles. His effortless blending of comedy and seriousness was fabulous. I know Jared Leto will win the Oscar but Bradley deserves it more. Cooper was considered a Chocolate boy type of actor and this performance just tells his critics to shove it. Jennifer Lawrence's performance was the best. She was the best conner of 'em all. Her rendition of Live and Let Die was funny and dramatic at the same time. She should win the Oscar and not Lupita Nyong'o. American Hustle has a 50% chance of winning The Best Picture Oscar and not 100% because the Academy will be biased towards 12 Years A Slave. BTW this movie was much better than Wolf Of Wall Street. WOWS was a movie just showing hookers, drugs, alcoholics. It didn't have any real story. AH and WOWS should not be compared.
The Blacklist (2013)
Oh My God!!!!!!!
This is my new favorite show. I love James Spader. His sarcasm and his and his one liners are AWESOME. The way he insulted the FBI by calling their Top Ten Most Wanted List 'A POPULARITY CONTEST'was mind blowing. Megan Boone is charismatic and has a little more heart than I thought She would have. Some people are just cold hearted but she ain't. Every episode you begin to doubt Raymond but in the end you just love him the way you did before. I can't wait for the next episode and especially the reason why Reddington chose Elizabeth Keen. I also love the way he says in the pilot "I'm gonna make you famous Lizzie." It is really heart warming to see the connection between them. It sometimes makes my heart ache. I think Raymond is Keen's father or someone related to him. Otherwise he would not have known anything about her.
Limitless (2011)
If only the ending would have been as good as the whole movie.
Science says that you can access only 20% of your brain but Eddy Morra has other ideas. He decides to up his ante to 100. This movie takes on a crazy ride that fills your entire body with an adrenaline rush that has a lasting effect. Bradley Cooper acts in a way you won't feel he's acting. Robert de Niro is a perfect thug to Cooper's innocent but soon to become mafia of sorts. Abbie Cornish is the only person who spoils an other wise perfect cast. She is irritating and just spoils the whole experience. But alas! The promise of the first half does not lead up to the perfect movie it was supposed to be. The ending was predictable. But still it was good enough to be one of the best movies sci-fi or otherwise that I have seen.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
My Favorite Movie
My favorite movie. I love this movie. It understands what I go through everyday (am not mentally challenged). The complex relationship between Pat and everyone around him is what i go through is what I go through. This movie is about detached people trying to find their way in this dark, pessimistic and cynical world. Everyone tries to find someone who completes them and these people are trying to either find them or trying to get them back. I love the way I feel when I am watching this movie. When I watch a movie and I love it I repeat it in my sleep. My memory might not be too good but I do repeat this movie in my sleep whenever I am feeling blue. When life hits you hard you can watch SLP and you will feel okay. This movie speaks. It has a beautiful soul. It gives a voice to people who can't speak. Jennifer Lawrence shines like a golden star. She plays Tiffany Maxwell with such ease that it makes me uneasy as to how she did it. It has romance, drama, jealousy, everything that one feels. I cried when Pat confessed his love for Tiffany, I smiled with amusement when Tiffany had her breakdown. David O Russell is the greatest director of his generation (You could argue but let's just agree to disagree). He does a beautiful job of carving a treat out of a book. I always like the book more than the movie but this is THE ONLY EXCEPTION. This movie taught me how to see the SILVER LINING in every bad thing. I love this movie and I hope you do to.
