This movie is a gem, not just glitter.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is more than the stories of Brian Slade, Curt Wild and Arthur Stuart. Its more than an interesting look into Oscar Wilde. This movies is about more than just glam rock, glam rockers, sexual revolutions and music. This movie is an all around allegory for any pop icon. Following the rise and fall of Brian Slade, glam rock superstar, and all the people he affected, the movies portrays the power that society gives to a pop icon. "Rock 'n Roll is a prostitute, it should be tarted up." Not just about the rock genre at all. Any pop icon out there goes for extremes, and then society breeds followers and fans. Velvet Goldmine follows a fan/a follower, a movement and a pop icon as well as his influences through the rise and fall. This movie is a superb character study for an archetype for any pop icon, not merely a glam rocker. Fame brings power to influence the masses, and as you see in Velvet Goldmine, it also can bring self destruction in the spotlight. Plus, the soundtrack is excellent!

Ghost World (2001)

a thoughtful movie.

Okay, so yes its an Indie Film. Yes the comic and the movie at some points seem ALL TOO similar. But the relationship portrayals and the human impacts in this movie make it a most excellent movie. There are subplots going on, surrounding the nature of a long time childhood friendship that has just matured to adulthood, which couples with the responsibilities of adulthood to challenge the bonds of a friendship. This film deals with an outsiders view of a suburban life that they are not totally happy with, and always looking for ways to rebel against. Often ending up feeling misunderstood. Real emotions, ideas and actions come out in the film, making it an enjoyable watch. I would recommend this movie to most everyone, not children so much, and not anybody going through the similar issues of reaching a junction in their life that challenges their bonds with friends, family and loved ones. I watched it once when I was in that sort of mind set, and it mostly just kept my mind racing. Excellent movie!

SubUrbia (1996)

A long time favorite...
19 November 2005
I first saw subUrbia in probably 1997, and since then I have shared it with countless people and watched it plenty myself. Its not the sort of movie that you can put in, and then not really watch, to me it requires a bit more concentration. At th same time, the events that unfold for the characters in this movie always strike me. Another major bonus with this film is the issues it takes the time and consideration to cover, sexism, racism, classism, urban sprawl, the third world, and more... Its not a movie for people that don't want to see that ugly side of humans, but then all too often in day to day life the suburbs serve to show the ugly side of humans. Not a movie for children, and I wouldn't watch it with my grandma! Its a powerful and real story of life past high school, but not dealing with college. Of life feeling stuck, trapped, sometimes defeated in your current place, here suburbia. Its not a movie that offers a ton of hope, but its a powerful movie nonetheless!

Sticks in your mind.

There haven't been a lot of movies out lately that have really stuck in my mind as excellent, and really, this one has. It captures Louisiana lifestyles, something that may be changing now forever, while portraying human emotions on a real and raw level. The filming is excellent, the score is excellent, and the story, or in someways stories, that are unfolding as the movie progresses, are naturally, excellent. I don't normally like John Travolta, but this I honestly believe is his best role to date. He is a real person, not singing or playing that slightly off-his-rocker villain character. He's a person, and he becomes more real than I am used to seeing him. This movie was fantastic. This one is well worth finding, renting or buying, and watching more than once. It leaves you smiling with tears. GOOD MOVIE!!!

Excellent

I thought that this was an excellent film, and that it really addressed some very important issues. The description given here does this film NO justice at all, nor does the trailer. I first saw this movie about six years ago and hadn't seen it since until recently. I am currently doing research of native lifestyles and the politics of reservationist systems and this movie suddenly came to mind, from six years prior. It really stuck with me through what has been six years of pretty regular movie watching and it and I am glad that it did. It is MOST definitely work a watch at least once! Its the only movie that i can recall seeing that has any sort of good representation for use in my research.
