Professione: reporter (1975)
Was she Daisy?
I saw this movie a long time ago, and the other day I watched it again. This time it really took my breath away. It's an incredible movie, and Nicholson is absolutely fantastic.
But what amazes me that except one person here, nobody has figured out who "the girl"was. I watched the movie again tonight with utmost attention, and I think that "the girl" was no coincidence at all. He sees her in London, she's there in Barcelona, then when his boss catches up with her in front of the Hotel Oriente and asks if she knows Robertson, she replies "in a way". Then after that she figures out who Locke is. She goes through the notes Robertson had written, and comments that Daisy must have been his favorite. And so on. Yes she likes, maybe even loves Locke but she stays with him in order to finish the business with the rebels. Notice how she keeps urging him on to finish what he started. Without her secret agenda that would be a very odd behavior. Before I discovered the mystery, I thought of her behavior as very very strange.
Antonioni is very subtle but every little hint means something, it's not just that a weird spaced out architectural student hooks up with Locke just for no reason.
In the end, of course, after the hotel clerk clearly states that Mrs. Robertson had checked in already and there's no need for him to sign up(one passport is enough) Locke all of a sudden gets it. They like each other but he knows she had betrayed him, and he tells her to leave. Watch her behavior from then on- carefully watch the celebrated 7 minutes how she acts.
I've been stunned all day today thinking that this hidden story has been overlooked. After all these years the hidden meaning lay undiscovered by most. Absolutely amazing. Watch it very very closely if you care, and maybe you will agree with my opinion.
A very great film. In the ocean of contemporary crap, this gem shines brightly, timeless.
To the Wonder (2012)
Hopping like a cutesy bunny, twirling and twirling
Some reviewers here are praising the camera work-please any kid with a camera with a wide angle lens can run around and jump from sunset to sunset, and be "artistic". I think the"beautiful" images shot with a shaky and extremely wide angle contribute to the utter superficiality, pretentiousness and emptiness of the movie. It is all Mr. Mallick's vision, no doubt.
I don't want to repeat what others here have said much better than I- just want to express how nauseous the constant twirling spinning jumping, and acting cutesy was to me. Both actresses just beyond awful. Yes Ben Afleck's back of his head one great visual feast. I'm amazed a film like this can actually be made- I keep thinking how much money was wasted on this worthless oeuvre. A huge ego rears it's ugly head all over the place. But yes, one can just turn it off, or walk out. Avoid.
Le meraviglie (2014)
So glad I have seen this
It's interesting to read the other people's reviews as always. This film is obviously about the contrast of an authentic existence and the prevailing vulgarity and pretense of the times we live in. I'm so happy and grateful somebody sees the difference, and speaks up about it. The invasive fake onslaught of the movie company, including Monica Belluci is right on the money. What's there not to understand? I'm reacting to some reviews here. And there's more to this than just a depiction of life on the farm, please! I find that women film directors nowadays, make many times better films than men. There's an extra quality they bring in. We need it. Thank you for this film.
C.O.G. (2013)
A very good movie
I'm not going to describe the plot, other reviewers here have covered that. I think this is a very deep movie. It deals with a wide range of problematic beliefs, for many painful, most of the time hidden and unresolved. They are difficult subjects -belief in God, notions of human goodness/evil, homosexuality, and envy. I find it revealing that some react with anger and vulgarities. This movie requires maturity, intelligence and openness. It certainly isn't meant to be a comedy or a"gay" movie, I only wish some were more fair and maybe admit they didn't get it instead of violent trashing a quality film.
