Man Up (2015)
Original and entertaining
I loved it. I don't remember laughing quite this much in so long! The interesting thing was that the jokes were fresh and contemporary and the comedic acting was brilliant. You can see the real-time improv happening between the actors and the chemistry that forms between the two unlikely characters. Lake Bell and Simon Pegg have done a great job as such speedy rapport could not be so well executed by everyone.
Having seen the trailer, i approached the film somewhat doubtfully, expecting forced romanticism and banal jokes. I was happily surprised to find a well-made film both in direction, photography and writing. You genuinely get the feeling that the makers of the film were full of excitement and invested in a fresh take to the standard romantic comedy.
The script could have easily ended up a bore, but the whole thing was paced so well that the story never slows to a crawl and there is always an original bit of banter to keep up the pace.
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the very real weirdos i saw in this film and the unexpected plot twists they caused. I also loved how gutsy and heartfelt the main characters were. I was not expecting to laugh out loud so often as you don't get that with rom- coms anymore. A very nice surprise overall.
Song One (2014)
Warm and charming
Not a directorial masterpiece but the storyline was lovely and sound mixing and soundtrack were excellent. The film has a very mellow tone throughout and should be a hit with any genuine admirer of the acoustic music scene.
I've rated 7/10 for Anne Hathaway's beautiful portrayal of a humble and shy character, and the feast for the ears that is this film's sound; both in songs and the sound of the cityscape it celebrates so well.
Although i don't relate to the characters, the quiet progression of the film does not reflect on the ability of the actors so i disagree with some of the comments above. This is more of a situation film and the ending does not evoke the feeling of too much sugar in your mouth like other films of the same genre.
