Bowling for Columbine (2002)
Warning - Read the IMDb Parents Guide before renting this movie
Don't judge me harshly, but I like my videotaped murders and suicides to be cartoonish and unreal. Dirty Harry villains getting what they deserve? YES! Real people shooting themselves in the head? NO!!! This film shows videos of actual killings and suicides that made me stop watching it after the first wave of "real" killings that is shown about fifteen minutes in - and shown without even the slightest warning. The killings were frightening, disturbing, and very, very sad. I wanted to like this film. My brother Jim thinks it is a great documentary, the critics seem to generally like it, and the DVD box says it is very funny. I wish I had researched a bit more, though, since on this very website the Parents Guide makes it clear that this is not a film for the squeamish among us. I am one of the squeamish sort. When the newscasters tell me in advance that the following video footage contains scenes that some viewers might find disturbing, I look away. So, I avoided this movie for many years just because it seemed like I would find it disturbing. I am guessing that Michael Moore had his reason for editing the film in a way that moved from scenes of "movie" violence to actual murders without any warning to the audience. I will start using the Parents Guide before watching similar movies.
Pushing Daisies (2007)
Dull, but not unpleasant
I have come to the conclusion that a show will be canceled if the main character(s) are not as interesting (funny, good actors, etc.) as the supporting cast. This is the case for "Pushing Daisies," though I have the advantage of making my prediction after the show was canceled. I wanted to like this show because the premise seemed interesting and I thought it might be a suitable replacement for the brilliant "Dead Like Me." Sadly, "Pushing Daisies" reaches the level of "Not Unpleasant" on my personal rating scale. I would watch it if nothing else interesting were on. Chi McBride-a supporting cast member-was the performance standout, and all he did was play pretty much the same character he always plays. The concept behind the show was interesting until half-way through the first episode, then it got old very fast. The writing was not over the top, but it probably should have been given the low-key performances by Lee Pace and Anna Friel. Also, the contrived ethical dilemmas faced by the characters were, I suspect, supposed to seem a lot funnier, or at least a lot more important, than they came off. Finally, to echo other comments on this show, the narrating was tiresome. Perhaps i will watch the rest of the series one day, if nothing more interesting is available.
Revelations (2005)
Hideous!
I know there are a wide range of tastes in entertainment out there, but this show is PAINFULLY bad. It is the writing, acting, and direction that make this so awful. In any given year there has to be one show that is the worst of the lot, but this show may well hold that distinction for the entire decade. I stumbled onto this while trying to find something that was similar to other shows that I do like, such as Carnivale, which is also an apocalyptic tale with overt religious content. I also LOVE David Selter's "The Omen" and one or two of its sequels. Plus I have enjoyed Bill Pullman's work in other programs and movies. Sadly, neither Seltzer or Pullman seemed to have exerted any special effort on this throw-away. "The end is Here," to which I add "and not soon enough!"
