Shark! (1969)
It is what it is
Most of the facts about this movie have already been addressed.
What hasn't:
Burt Reynolds proves himself for more roles in Hollywood with a great performance of a down on his luck Expat American traveling the world on a dime. He is macho, cool, tough, romantic, comic, touching with his relationship with a young homeless kid, etc. He checks all the boxes and would use his talent to become one of the biggest stars of the 70's 80's.
Fuller had something here and I only wish we could see what the producers cut.
This is a B movie and you may even fall asleep but it takes you back to a time when movies weren't just about super heroes flying through the air and everyone doing the right thing - boring -- Sudan, Sharks, Treasure!
If someone were to ask: "I never saw a Burt Reynolds movie what should it be?" - I would show them this first so they can see his raw talent in a rugged low budget late night flick.
Hard Contract (1969)
I Agree with all
i don't think anyone will just chose this movie to watch out of the blue. if you're watching Hard Contract you either are a Coburn or Remick fan. yes, like others said its boring but (like others said...) it's dullness is something in itself. Movies were more real (if one can make such a statement) back then - kind of raw, intelligent doesn't pander to the viewer. those times are gone but this Coburn movie along with "Duffy" can transport you back in time to 1968/70. The world of movies back then made you think - you didn't have everything spelled out for you. They also challenged your beliefs - if you do that now a days, the PC police will put you in your place.
Breathless (1983)
Underrated Film of All Time
I think it was some time in the late 80's when films started to become predictable. This version of Breathless in 1983 had a couple thing going for it - Richard Gere as he rose to fame and that is was a remake of a classic film. The writer of this film took some really big chances. We're suppose to root for a cop killer, street thug and womanizer? Yup and we do because the film works. It's not preaching morality like all films seem to do, it takes risks. My favorite seen of the film is towards the end where they go to underground dance party and end up in the loft of a movie theatre playing the classic 1940's film noir. The ending is a classic to - it's all or nothing with this film.
Duffy (1968)
Only those who know - know
Some great insight into the film by other reviewers - great job. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Duffy wasn't box office box back then, but who cares baby - probably the hippest film of it's time that still is entertaining to watch. Man, i've seen a lot of movies, there is no film that captures the time and place like Duffy. I saw this film when i was about 15 living in the Midwest and it opened my mind to go out there and see the world. I did and never looked back - thanks Duffy! - It says I have to write more sentences, that is the world we are living in now... the freedom the people felt back in the 60-70's was much different than we got now. A consumer culture we are.
A Map for Saturday (2007)
Nicely done - don't compare apples to oranges
although it may seem easy to make a travelogue like this, not many have done it. i really can't think of another doc that takes you on a trip and is as concise, fun and well made as this one. lonely planet series comes to mind but that's about it.
one complaint i have with others who criticize this, is that; it is what it is. this is not suppose to be a cultural anthropological study or a doc on the culture of the people - it is a doc about traveling around the world meeting people in hostels and it succeeds in being a very entertaining 90 minute film.
for anyone that has done this, you will love it. for anyone that wants to do it, it will inspire you.
since mostly young, impressionable people do this, after a while on the road it does get tedious when other people just ask questions comparing their trip to yours. "what, you didn't visit the hill tribes!" or "that place is too touristy" or "you only spent a week there!" etc...
just go out and enjoy, experience and wander around our beautiful planet and if you really want to have a unique experience, forgo the guide books and create your own trip, it will be frustrating at times but you will come back with a unique and original adventure. the best times will be the times you don't have it all planned out.
