Aladdin (2019)
Great visuals and all, but missing that "magic"
When it comes to visuals, through out the movie was just... beautiful- the clothes, culture and architecture. Will Smith's Genie was unexpectedly good and created his OWN version which is great! As for the rest of the major characters? Well...
Jaafar was a bit of a let down from the beginning. Not menacing enough on the outside. Yet still cunning in some ways. Can't say much about his parrot... Jasmine's dad was disappointingly boring (prefer the bubbly albeit blur cartoony-version). Jasmine herself was alright (neither great nor terrible). The "feminist" like scenes were like an unecessary extra and a bit annoying to watch (don't ask me why). Abu (monkey) was cute. He was captured nicely. And lastly Aladdin? For a break through actor, he actually did a good job portraying Aladdin. EXCEPT his relationship with Jasmine...
..And THAT'S where the "magic" is missing. The core lovey-dovey magic thats hard to explain except through emotions. I feel it's one of the major things that makes Disney's Aladdin.. "ALADDIN"! But I felt nothing from the "Whole New World" scene. No chemistry between the two "lovers". Even in other scenes...
This is similarly felt between Aladdin & Genie. Particularly towards the end. The lack of that "core" emotion is so disappointing that I couldn't enjoy the movie as a whole. It just felt more on how it looked rather how it SHOULD feel. I mean this is Aladdin! Where's the magic?
The Lion King (1994)
A Shakespeare inspired story told in beautiful narrative
What an interesting (and albeit fun) way to tell Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in a cartoonish fashion set in the Animal Kingdom.
Yet, despite the familiar base story, it came out EPIC as hell-- Becoming one of Disney's best animated films ever produced! (Explanation followed~)
You know a movie is just darn good when it leaves you emotionally riled up each time you watch it. And Lion King just does that.
Especially the beginning, the goosebumps-- *shivers*
But apart from the epic narrative, the morale in it as just as powerful: "Remembeing who you are and that running away from your past / responsibilities won't fix anything. Instead embrace your past mistakes, learn from it and move on. Also remembering that worrying most of the time won't help either. Remeber to have fun once in a while.(Hakuna Matata!)
Growing up with this movie has been one hell of a ride, and continues to leave me feeling thrilled each time. (25 yo and still not tired of it!). A definite must-watch. Young parents of our time now should introduces this to their children!!
Christopher Robin (2018)
Don't forget your inner child
The plot may seem generic and predictable, but it was all too relatable: "The part where we grow up and lose our inner child. Losing ourselves in the process..." Seeing how Christopher grew up and became a corporate slave was depressing. Forgetting what's REALLY important-- which is something of a reality today, sadly (my reality) ...
For those who grew up to Winnie The Pooh stories, the re-encounter between an adult Christopher and Pooh was beautifully bittersweet. And what followed after was a forced remembrance of how living in the NOW is just as important as spending treasured time with your loved ones, family. All this- captured beautifully in watching Christopher remembering back his childhood and learning what truly matters in this world.
A truly nostalgic film. The emotional aspect of it stole my heart. A definite must watch for all. Especially for workaholics!
*(Always remember that it is your FAMILY who is always there for you. Companies could care-less... And it is alright to have fun once in a while. Time is invaluable).
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Emotional. Yet the overhype was unnecessary
I was ecstatic-- So ecstatic to see this film. But after just watching it. Honestly I don't know what to feel...
The first 2+ hours was a snail's pace. I felt there were too much unnecessary dialogues. And being true to heart of watching all the Marvel movies, this one made me yawn at least 3 times.
The "good stuff" only came towards the last hour. But even then the action sequences wasn't THAT great in comparison to Infinity War. It was a brief good entertainment to say the least...
I believed the writers were trying to make it more of a sentimental kind of superhero movie instead. Which, don't get me wrong, it's a nice approach. As there were some touching moments and it can definitely bring out the tears (mostly likely affecting the sensitive folk) ...
I just felt it was a tad bit much (emotion > action). Maybe a nice balance of emotion and action would do be more suiting, as I've always felt this "balance" in the previous Avenger movies.
All-in-all, it was still a good movie. Not that great as typically people would expect (from the overhype and all). The ending was a real nice touch to the franchise. Now THAT brought on the water-works. Salute to that!
So thank you--- thank you to all those who've worked on Endgame. I believed you tried your very best and though it didn't satisfied me fully. It still left others happy, overall. So people, do give it a watch. As there's still some worth in it. *Salutes*
Outlander (2014)
Seventeenth Century GOLD
I have never read the books nor have I ever heard of this series until I accidentally stumbled upon it on some random post on Facebook.
And I'm bloody glad I did because the series by far:
Stunning. Emotionally Beautiful. Unbearably Sexy. And just so, so good to watch!
And the Scottish culture back in those days, man, it's all very interesting and despite me knowing very little of it, I can still greatly enjoy it!
And the actors, especially Jamie and Claire, damn their chemistry is off the charts and I can't help but think that there IS something actually going on there.
But seriously though, top-notch acting and performance. The whole atmosphere even, just awe-struck "woah!"
I'm currently at Season 2: Episode 9 now and boy, it just keeps getting better. (I'm so hooked right now).
So yes, highly recommended to watch!!
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
A Wrinkled-up Mess
I see a lot of reviewers here have read the book that this movie was loosely adapted from
Well, coming from someone who HASN'T read the book. Maybe this review might be helpful to others out there who are like me:
Plot: 3.5/10
Cinematography: 4/10
Visuals: 7/10
Actors: 7/10
Overall: 3/10
I watched the movie almost nearly blindfolded. All I checked out was the cast and the plot summary.
The pace of the movie felt slow. The actors were great on their own (except Calvin which I'll explain later), as well as the visuals but the plot was too cliche and predictable ... which made the movie an overall "bore" to watch.
But it wasn't that boring though, given a lil thanks to the visuals. That's how I felt anyway, otherwise I would have yawn multiples times throughout the movie; but I didn't.
Anyway, good acting came from the star actors, especially lil Charles Wallace (played by Deric McCabe). But one main character felt a bit odd to watch and that is Calvin (played by Levi Miller). Dude looks and sounds like he's high/drugged on some love spell. And I'm not sure if that's intentional or not but I did not feel any emotional depth in character. Like he's just there for the sake of being there.
And the plot... ayy, nothing much to say about it other than it being absolutely predictable. Especially with the whole "there is light in darkness" concept. So yes, just like most of the folks here have said: "very poor script".
And it's such a shame really because I felt there IS potential to bring out that hidden awesomeness in it---
I wondered why the advertising for this movie was not that happening. Well, that's a good thing I guess because if it were then the hit from critics would be a lil more painful.
