Another boring millennial "coming of age" flick, deserves less than a 5
25 November 2016
Another coming of age film for the modern generation that leaves a million unanswered questions and at times is simply confusing. The transitions from the imaginary to real world interaction aren't very well-defined and the characters are simply boring. The 7+ score drew me into watching, but both the wife and I were left disappointed as so many questions were left unanswered. The gratuitous scene towards the end I assume was meant as a metaphor for something, but it failed to make any sense at all. I often wonder if movies like this reflect how America is changing or if filmmakers are simply to lazy to write a decent story. A generous 5 out of 10.

Don't Grow Up (2015)

Another film that suffers from IMDb's rating scheme...
8 May 2016
I recently watched this film and while it's certainly no blockbuster, I was surprised that I didn't find myself bored or wishing I had something better to watch. This film was far more dramatic than I expected, especially considering that nearly the entire cast were adolescent kids. As mentioned in some other reviews, the poor decisions made by characters is actually somewhat believable considering their young age.

That said, this film deserves far more than anything below a 5 out of 10. I scored it a 6, simply because it surprised me with decent, yet brief SFX and reasonably high production values. The acting also exceeded expectations. I anticipated some teen angst, but it wasn't over done or gratuitous. The film worked fine for a budget indie flick about some teen's perspective of the apocalypse.

I've seen far worse and I suspect this film's rating suffers from blown expectations of those expecting an action flick with tons of "disaster porn" that's usually associated with films of this genre. To paraphrase another review, this film is just fine for watching on a late night or rainy day.

The Conjuring (2013)

Another typical horror movie that shows promise, but fizzles into ridiculousness...
15 October 2013
I noticed the surprisingly high IMDb score (which are becoming increasingly useless, but probably another topic for another time) and thought I'd check this flick out, considering it's not often that horror films exceed 7.0 on the IMDb scale. The film starts out promising, with a genuinely creepy vibe and some believable haunting "events". For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won't discuss what happens, but nearly 3/4 through the film, the plot takes a hard left to Crazy Town. Even my wife, a much more forgiving horror fan than I, was asking me out loud if the filmmakers actually expected the audience to believe even a sliver of what was happening on screen. I'm still unsure why horror movies feel the need to go completely over the top in the absence of a decent plot, which this film had initially, but began to quickly unravel during the climax of the story. I still feel Poltergeist is the standard-bearer for ghost/haunting films, and this film doesn't even come close despite some talented actors doing the best they could with the material. This film is simply your typical ghost film, with an inexplicable ending. If you've nothing else to watch, give it a try, but no one should assume this film is any better than dozens of ghost movies released in recent years, and in no way deserves the 7+ IMDb score it currently holds.
