Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
I think this one is only for people who haven't seen violence in their life before
I saw the ratings so I gave it a chance. The movie starts slowly but with a moderate and realistic plot.
But then... all that went, starting from VV breaking the car glass (I saw this in real life - u go straight to the hospital post such glass injuries) and the endless "beating" scenes... Sorry, I've seen my share of fights in real-life and was in the army, unless u made out of pure steel, no one can absorb so many blows and keep his feet on (it usually takes only one to cripple a guy, even big guys!).
The major problem in the movie is that VV is like a man on steroids, getting punched in the face, shocked by electricity, falling on sharp glasses and so on and so but he's face remain intact (with a mild black mask or scratches) - this cannot happen in a wanna-be realistic movie.
From what I saw in real life, people who get a single beating in the right place, simply fall and even get comma, and recall he isn't supposed to be a trained MMA person!
I gave it the 4/10 for the visuals and the decent production value but this is ain't a good movie, sorry...
Blade Runner (1982)
Just saw it and had to make sure the score was right...
I'm writing this review after reading at least 30 reviews here on IMDb (10 of 1 star, 20 of 7+) and I just wanted to emphasize how shocked I am that someone actually gave this one above 5 (maybe for the effects which aren't that special, even then) and I must agree deeply with the 1 star givers - This is probably one of the worst, most viewer insulting, carp of a film I've seen and I'm a Sci-Fi / Fantasy standard geek who read lots of books and see 90% of all genre related movies. All the characters are near to completely shallow, the dialogues are pathetic and scares, the wanna-be-Protagonist (i.e. the replicants) are seem to be on cracks with super-power and no apparent real intellect (or moral, if that even matters). The concept of sending one man (may he be a replica or not) against the "most dangerous escapee" is ridiculous, all the genius "gene creators" have no security none so ever, live in dirty places (and always alone!) and have no survival instinct at all. I can't believe Philip K. Dick book is that shallow (which I haven't read as of yet). This was a boring movie, with no real philosophical point, no trigger to continue watching it and no deep thoughts at the end...
Is this really the movie that was considered a milestone in Sci-Fi? I tend to think even BttF trilogy had more philosophical moments :( Don't waste your time on this movie!
Mi Mefakhed Mehaze'ev Hara (2013)
Quite nice and quite entertaining...
Overall, quite a basic thriller with the casual dark-humor. As an Israeli, I must applaud to the recent quality of Israeli films, not just in the script domain but in the delivery (shots, scenery, music, general atmosphere, editing, etc.). This movie is obviously an homage for several dark horror movies like Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead, Hot Fuzz and the likes i.e. a serious wanna be film with psychotic characters and horror-like theme.
Some reviews mentioned no character here is likable - yep... so what? It's like criticizing the script for being a script :)
The plot was quite straightforward (there was no real doubt that our pedophile was THE pedophile...) and apart from the last scene, which was crafted quite nicely, all the rest was put on the table right from the start. It's obvious to me that the film goal was plainly to entertain, especially if you're from Israel so you can quite relate to the fact that even psychopaths have a polish Jewish mom ;)
All in all, one of the better Israeli productions of the recent years (along with Ajami) and at least one that doesn't involve the usual Israeli-Palestine conflict (apart from the mounted-on-horse nice Arab character).
Give it a try if blood (the "red liquid") doesn't give you nausea!
The Wire (2002)
A superb scripting, cast and honesty delivers an outstanding show
As this is my first review on IMDb, I feel it's honest to mention that the reason to finally post a review, is just ending the marathon watch of The Wire season 5.
I've seen quite a lot of shows but I must rate The Wire as a true masterpiece although not for everyone... this show encompasses not just great ensemble of characters but also lots of sub-plots and criticism on bureaucracy, politics, streets mischief and above all others - the human mind and heart.
I didn't hear too much about the show before but as it was rated top in IMDb (and as I didn't have anything else to see :P) I decided to give it a try and boy, although season 1 was the slowest, the others just kept me mesmerized. I will not go on and give any spoilers but I do feel a quick season rank would be nice: Season 1 good but slow, Season 2 and 3 very good, Season 4 simply top-notch and Season 5 very good (with the last few episodes being a real Emmy award IMO).
I think what really catches you in the show is the look and feel of a real police investigation with human beings a key-players and cops who are just one tip from gangsters and criminals who were just born in the wrong parts of the city. As characters grow on you and you see the general injustice and politicians wits and deeds, how lawyers bend the rules and cops walk on thin ice to do what is right, you can't stop wondering how much of this Ed Burns (Story writer) might have seen on the streets and that everything can happen where ruthless capitalism navigates the doings of cities...
Truly the honest show of them all - if you haven't seen it, give it a chance, after season 1, I promise you that you won't stop!
For me, all remains now is to give Breaking Bad a chance...
