Honestly this show probably deserves a 5 or 6 star rating but I can't bring myself to give it any higher when comparing it to SOA. I will start off by saying the original SoA is one of my top 5 favorite shows up there with Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. And I remembered talk of a prequel in the works telling the story of the club starting out after they got back home from Vietnam in the 60's-70's and was really looking forward to that series if it was ever made.
So you can imagine my disappointment when I watch a cheap Mexican spin-off trying to copy the basic flow of SOA but with no substance of it's own. If you have never watched SOA then this show may be decent for you but if you enjoyed watching SOA and connected with the characters then there is a good chance you will be disappointed.
The overall acting and quality of the show is very bland, the characters have absolutely no likability and even though I've watched the first few episodes I wouldn't be disappointed if any of them got killed off because none of them stand out to me. The only character in the whole show that is worth a damn is the two main characters father (Edward Olmos). Too bad they couldn't have made him an older member of the club, at least there would have been one character to care about. They will probably find a way to kill him off in the first season and keep the trash.
If this was a prequel to SOA set in the 60's-70's but with the same bad acting I would still have probably rated it higher just because the story would have been more interesting. I don't get the story here, the two main characters are back stabbers and snitches and have no personality and the show has no direction. The rebels with their masks looks stupid, the whole thing just makes me embarrassed for Kurt Sutter since he has so much potential.
Perhaps if I was Mexican I would connect better with this show? I'm not a racist or anything but with Sons I just felt like I could have been one of the guys and could put myself in that lifestyle if my life would have taken a couple different turns. With this show I just can't see that and so many little things are goofy to me. I can't get over how dumb it would be to have the handle bars of the bike up so high like that especially while doing "protection runs" - try shooting a gun while riding a bike like that. Heck you'd be lucky if your hands weren't completely numb from having to hold them up so high. On SOA everything made sense and it wasn't just about looking cool. In future episodes I bet some of the main characters rides are low riders with hydraulics jumping up and down - probably while in the middle of a shootout or something. Yea, it's probably obvious for anyone that's made it this far to realize I felt the need to vent my frustration over this horrible spinoff.
And sadly I doubt it's cancelled after the first season there will likely be enough people to keep this mediocre show going for a couple-few years so any chance of us seeing a prequel will be many years down the road (at least 5-10 at best). And I just hope the poor reviews and ratings on this one doesn't keep Sutter from making another SOA spinoff. To all of you who enjoyed it I am happy for you, truly.. I wish I could get into it as well but it leaves much to be desired for me. If you are reading this and haven't watched the show yet, give it a try you may enjoy it. Or if you have watched SOA and it was one of your favorite shows you may be coming here to vent like me after a few episodes.
