Chicago P.D. (2014)
Too many crossovers, giving up
OK so I am a fan of NYPD SVU so the first cross over that requires watching a different programme was annoying but ok and is a blatant cross promotional scam.
I am now in S3 Ep 10, the recap starts playing and I am lost.
I log onto imdb and someone helpful has posted that this episode is a cross over of not one, but two other completely different shows!
So that is a cross promotion of 3 other programmes within the first 3 seasons.
What next?
I can't be bothered watching this as there will be lots of material that make no sense in the 2 other crossovers because each episode is not stand alone.
Good show but but not good enough to put up with this.
Chicago P.D.: There's My Girl (2015)
For some reason a cross over is required to SVU.
In Australia prime is currently episode 19 season16, even though episode 20 description indicates this is the episode it's mislabeled.
How are you supposed to know this? Maybe at the time it was advertised it was made clear but if you are streaming it's like Eh?
Other than that it's a show almost as good as SVU but not quite.
Worth while and some great acting but I do find they make some pretty optimistic leaps of logic, like "didn't you also have a cat?, oh that must mean the killer likes to eat mice, and must be Bill, not quite but you out get the drift,
Um nothing else, filling up characters.
Road House (2024)
Ah well, as expected, less than average
Kudos to Jake for getting ripped.
Connor? Stinker., but is Schwarzenegger any better? Good on him for having a go.
Was never going to be as good.as the original.
However, it's a low brow action flick and don't expect the zen approach that the original took.
I think that is what is missing, it really doesn't leverage the the original Dylan's obvious introspection as evidenced by the revelation of his formal education in philosophy even though he shrugs it off it is demonstration of his humility.
The refresh is battling with demons but Jake's performance in Southpaw is much more believable.
In summary, sure, watch it as an homage to the departed Swayzee but don't expect anything stimulating beyond the b grade punch it out movie that it unfortunately is.
David Brent: Life on the Road (2016)
More of the same, but delivers less
6/10 because I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. I think the format of a movie length program gets you down a bit. Cringeworthy is of course fun, but too much of a good thing?
If you imagine the best and worst of the office rehashed, then having more of the worst emotions was just a bit of a bummer without the ability of the funny bits to dilute the impact.
The surprise was the original soundtrack and RG vocal talent being another string in his bow.
As a fan of RG you can't really pass this up but I found I was left a bit depressed after the movie.
I thought that "After Life" with some same actors presents a much better balance in spite of the otherwise not so funny back story.
Watch it if you are a fan.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Great movie, if it was not true
Yes, this is a great movie with excellent performances from the cast.
It is an adaption of the book which glamorises the life of the main protagonist Jordan Belfort aka "the Wolfe".
However, having watched his interviews after his release from gaol, he has learned nothing and has no remorse for ripping off investors to fund his lifestyle and stroke his immense ego. Sounds like every other conman/Ponzi scheme operator in history, right? Well it is and we don't hold them up as heroes.
Hard to watch this and not think about the misery he caused just so he could beat his chest and buy another exotic sports car.
Watch as a cautionary tail of a lifestyle still lead by many wall street masters of the universe and yes can't deny it is very well put together film, it is only the subject matter that is questionable.
Mr Inbetween (2018)
An absolute gem, black humour at its best
This series was an absolute surprise and I'd heard nothing about it prior to viewing so I had no expectations, positive or negative.
Out of the blocks the lead is supernatural in his portrayal of the main character where acts of violence are undertaken with a business and detached measure of indifference and some mild regret.
The supporting actor playing his disabled brother needs to be seen to be believed.
The humour is spot on, maybe a bit parochial if your not Australian, and the main character is identified as the everyman that believes society is too soft on AXXholes and he can't take a step backwards.
Every scene is clinically acted out and I challenge anyone to walk away after 1 episode and not binge at least 3.
Not sure if you can compare this with anything out there but think Chopper meets Iceman meets. Underbelly meets Tarrantino, but much better than any of them individually.
A must see.
I 'm already sad I'm 2/3 the way through.
Ice Road Truckers (2007)
Absolutely nothing happens, that's the spoiler
I had Watched around 10 episodes after being sucked in by the constant tone of dread and fear in the narrator's voice.
Sure there are risks but none materialise. I am not looking for carnage but 30 minutes of various camera angles on a truck tire and on a truck cabin does not meet the tone set by the narrator or previews.
The most that happened was someone gets fired for speeding and someone else's brakes freeze (closed) and a truck slides through an intersection in town barely removing paint from a pick up. The accident is played in slow motion a dozen times and gets more boring each time.
Big deal.
Watch once because it is interesting to see how the remote mine gets its supplies but really that's all that happens and then you have seen every episode.
Creed II (2018)
Predictable takes itself far too seriously
When I saw this it was rated 7.1 on IMDB. I had to sit through this in 3 instalments is was so boring.
7.1? Unbelievable.
Another iteration of the franchise that reads more like a family feud on steroids.
Acting ok, only for die hard fans of Sly.
Hilariously predictable with the sons of former champions fighting each other of course over past memories being national pride and revenge.
Adonis has a kid in this movie and Rocky also had a grandson. Wait for it, wait for it, can you guess what the next instalment might be?
There must be something else to watch, other than to see Sly still kicking it really isn't worth you time.
The Boys (2019)
Taking a turn for the worse, hard core porn
The first two seasons were fantastic, a "realistic" view of super heroes in the real world and how absolute power corrupts absolutely.
This was more than good vs evil with interesting back stories and great action sequences.
However, enter Season 3, Episode 1.
This show has turned into a pornographic decline and I am no prude but the first 10 minutes were deeply disturbing and had me quickly reaching for the parental controls on the streaming service.
What a shame, I hope the lack of audience for this season is a lesson for the creators to dial back as I have no interest anymore in this programme.
Watch the first 10 minutes, delete from watch list.
Black Bird (2022)
A very rate 10 from me
What can I say? This series must showcase some of the best acting currently on the screen.
I was genuinely emotionally moved from fear, hate, disgust for the main protagonist who deserves all the awards applicable.
Paul Walter is apparently a stand up comedian but you would never guess it as a potential serial killer. I hope he isn't type cast he did such a great job.
Think how scary Hannibal Lector was and that's on par.
A fantastic "closed room" thriller which keeps you entranced the whole way through. Think Mindhunter, Silence of the Lambs as peers.
Without spoiling it is a cat and mouse game with lots at stake for cat and miouse and treachery abounding.
Loved it.
Interceptor (2022)
4 stars because there is so much worse crap out there
Really not worth 1 star.
I have seen so many movies with bigger stars that are as bad or worse and they rate higher. A 5 in IMBD is generally pretty bad although statistically it should be average. Go figure.
Anyway, the above is enough to tell you in my view, 1 star less the pretty bad but you can do a lot worse.
A good movie if you expect very little and enjoy a laugh.
The Game (1997)
Worste ending ever, given fantastic start
How can this rate add so highly?
I won't give you spoilers but suffice to say I always laugh at any story which has the hero expecting to be shot and wears a bulletproof vest saving the day.
Dumb and Dumber captured it beautifully,
"But what if he shot you in the face?"
You've been warned.
Such a let down after a very classy and intelligent start.
The Protégé (2021)
Seriously?
Rubbish. Stupid plot with absolutely no depth. Action scenes are good but I found myself looking at my watch. Very unoriginal plot which is just revenge taken on a character which is not explored for more than 5 minutes.
Makes no sense really.
Don't waste your time I can't believe how high this rates.
Knock Knock (2015)
Better than the reviews indicated
This was really suspensful and I kept hoping it would take a more favourable turn for the main character.
Sure Keanu acts like Bill and Ted but thats expected right?
Essences of Hard Candy but still enjoyable. The me too crowd will blame Keanu for his predicament and maybe so but all men are pigs, we get that, so why not show a little sympathy? The punishment should fit the crime. Intrigued? Give it a whirl if you enjoy Eli Roth direction.
Long Shot (2019)
So, so dumb.
Seth Rogan + beautiful successful woman = been there done that.
So stupid, so ridiculous that I ended up playing with my phone from the half way mark.
Not very funny, but crass and crude a little like the humour in 1000 ways to die in the west.
Usually I like Seth Rogan but this tries too hard too amuse the lowest common denominator.
It astounds me that this is liked by so many people.
Stream it if you must, don't pay to see it
Cop Out (2010)
Bruce Willis must be broke
Oh dear, Willis has been in some shockers and this does nothing to raise is reputation.
It is so regurgitated that it is like you are watching a compilation of the worste movies from say Adam Sandler, Willis, rehashes of Charlie Sheen and lame gangsta, stoner or whatever movie compilation.
We have a movie where two misfit cops, yes one divorced with wife remarried to rich guy, suspended for a keystone cops style suff up.
Then they have to fight a Hispanic gang to recover a baseball card trying to keep under the radar from the nasty police captain. Need i say more?
Nothing original nothing worth more than a strained smile.
Yuck.
Left Behind (2014)
Oh Dear
My Goodness, Nicholas Cage will clearly do anything for money. He apparently received $3m for this absolute rubbish. Shame on you Nicholas, shame on you. There are certain stars that attract me because they have integrity and even if I have not heard of the movie I will generally give it a go.
And then there is Cage.
I was unfortunately sent to catholic school and this movie reminded me of the c, d or e grade propaganda flicks that we were forced to watch when phys ed was cancelled due to rain.
The acting is woeful, the cinematography very soap opera.
The plot was promising, a bit Stephen King (Langoliers) so I gave it a go.
Don't make the same mistake I did.
You have been warned.
Predestination (2014)
A must see.
I would never ordinarily give anything a 10 but this movie leaves your head spinning at 100kph and therein lies the joy.
As with all time travel movies there are going to be some paradoxes but these are not meant to be understood, just accepted and enjoyed.
I read one review on this site which said it was unrealistic because the same atoms couldn't exist in more than one place at any one time. What are you, some type of big bang theory anal retentive? We are talking time travel not deconstructing DNA.
Anyway, Ethan Hawke is appropriately dark and Sarah Snook must be seen to be believed.
One of the better time travel efforts and by far, the most cerebral.
Watch out for the songs playing in the bar as they are beautifully inserted to give the viewer clues.
The Master (2012)
Sorry, I don't get it.
Painfully slow.
Phoenix and Hoffman are great actors and probably played their parts to the usual degree of excellence.
The movie is quite depressing but I am sure it appeals to the viewers of more esoteric films.
The subject matter is quite insidious but doesn't really offer an insight into Scientology which I expected.
To be honest I don't really know if the story really developed that well save to say River's character pretty much goes from bad to worse.
I like to be entertained if l invest 90mins.
The Equalizer (2014)
Predictable rubbish
I like a good 'underdog triumphs over adversity' movie but we have been here before with Denzil (Man On Fire!) who I previously much respected for his earlier works. If you have seen any film in the genre you have already seen this which offers nothing original. Seems like Denzil had a spare couple of months and million (also producer credit) and thought his name could carry this predictable rehash of Edward Woodward's original, much more believable brand. As expected, DW is a great actor but he should be ashamed of this carbon copy as should those who voted to bring this to an IMDb 7. I am losing faith in this scoring. I know people liked this but I guess expectations are currently low.
Need for Speed (2014)
Truly awful, couldn't get through it, tried twice.
Who the hell rated this movie so highly? I was interested in seeing Jessie from Breaking Bad in a different role but its just not worth it. I think this may indicate he is a one hit wonder. Even Tokyo Drift which is the worst of the FF franchise is better than this movie. Michael Keaton's character is so annoying that each time he came on I reached for the off button. Otherwise, I don't even know where to start. this looks like a slick movie to begin with but nose dives after about 15 minutes. The plot is so unbelievable from the perspective of risk vs reward it just doesn't seem plausible to the point of being ridiculous. When I watch these type of movies I don't expect much I just crank up the volume to feel the engine notes but this is really disappointing in all respects, trust me this is probably only watchable for 12 year old intellects. Don't waste your time.
The Frozen Ground (2013)
Excellent thriller.
So much more deserving than the 6.5 currently showing.
Cusack can be hit and miss with the roles he accepts with a very mixed history of eclectic and well scripted parts mixed with some shockers.
Cage, like Travolta, either has a bad agent or will do anything for money.
Fortunately both shine in this cat and mouse game which proves that a good story and snappy acting easily trumps a big budget.
This nail biter is like Law & Order on steroids, so as a fan of this TV show I loved this movie.
One of the better serial killer movies out there, not quite Silence of The Lambs but will not disappoint fans of the genre.
The Prince (2014)
Wow! Lame.
This is a 4 at best. Worse than average but not entirely unwatchable. A shame the cast couldn't save this one but you can still only just watch this only if you have absolutely nothing else available, and that could probably extend to reruns of the Simpsons. I agree with most of the other reviews, predictable, some terrible acting from support cast, a typical shoot 'em up movie which capitalizes on bringing tough guys out of retirement which seems to be all the rage at the moment. Some really bad miscasting, John Malkovic would have been better in the lead as he is meant to be crazy, ie the reference to Hadrian's Wall etc. No real redeeming features and best bypassed. Only gave it a 4 because I actually got to the end of it.
