Jamón Jamón (1992)
An Early Penelope Cruz movie
I happened to catch this movie on cable last night and found it to be truly fascinating even though I had to concentrate on reading the sub titles instead of looking at the picture and listening. Miss Cruz totally owns this film but ALL the acting is excellent. The raw passion of the main characters holds the viewer's attention throughout. Jamon Jamon is only Penelope's second movie according to her film biography but she shows NO inhibitions in her portrayal of a young passionate woman seeking love and fulfillment. Even her mother and potential mother-in-law are steaming with sexuality and seeking passionate liaisons. The potential father-in-law also gets a bit of titillation from the character so beautifully portrayed by Miss Cruz.
Waterland (1992)
Waterland works!
I just happened to catch this movie on cable last evening and it captivated me. Waterland should have received accolades when released but I had never even heard of it. All the acting is quite good but I was disappointed only to catch a glimpse of Maggie G. at the beginning of the movie as I was hoping for more of her. The story intrigues as it twists and turns in and out of the past and present without confusion but a slow and steady revealing of itself. Ethan Hawke is intriguing in what may even be his first film. Jeremy Irons fits a history teacher perfectly. I highly recommend this film for everyone who enjoys a good story, excellent acting, and beautiful filming.
29th Street (1991)
Loved this movie!!!
I just happened to catch this movie on cable last night and watched it all the way through (until 3AM) as it held my attention all the way. 29th street is entertaining and funny. Being Italian I could really relate as I saw many of my own family members portrayed quite accurately by the actors. Of course, Danny Aiello is the best as always and a joy to watch. He can knock on my door anytime! I wish we could see more movies starring this fine actor. The lottery ticket theme held this movie together quite nicely with a few twists and turns. We all share this dream...to win the lottery... which makes the viewer eager to see the outcome. I found myself wishing I were the one holding that ticket and living out that dream of being "the big winner". The love between the father and son created a beautiful ending to a charming movie.
