Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed (2022)
Not THAT salacious...
Maybe I've been desensitized to church/cult wrongdoings through watching about mass suicides, teleportation to space, and branding people, but this one is a little vanilla. Not that Hillsong isn't garbage, by any means, but hours of naive churchgoers whining about how a pastor was a hypocrite for having an affair... It tends to make one roll their eyes. Perhaps it's the sinner/non-believer in me, but I already expect the worst in people. This, oddly enough, includes phony, hipster, star-fúcker 'pastors'. There's nothing surprising here. It runs on and is truly boring. Save your church-bashing documentary hours for David Koresh.
Clock (2023)
Don't bother
The previews made it look like a smart satirical take on current political... err women's rights issues a lá pregnancy preferences. What it is in reality, is another story. It's just a lame horror movie filled with cheap, overdone jump scares and I can't help but feel exceedingly offended that it's not satire at all. For example, the protagonist says "she's never wanted children," yet somehow will readily succumb to pressure from friends and family to get pregnant and also readily believes that she's broken somehow for not wanting to procreate. Which is it? It gives an icky feeling that the folks behind this film are pushing an agenda that any childless woman is broken, which is messed up, especially in this day in age.
Alaska Daily (2022)
Stinks of network TV drama.
I had high hopes for this, but was suspicious about whether a quality drama could come from network television. The premise sounded both interesting and important. I expected 'True Detective,' but received yet another bland situation drama with very little hunting for clues about missing & murdered indigenous women. The dialogue is mediocre, as is the story, but the acting is fair. It would appear that network TV is more concerned with appealing to the mindless masses than putting out quality material. It doesn't do justice to the very real and very important subject matter. Shame on you, ABC, for exploiting these women just to turn a buck.
Something from Tiffany's (2022)
Rom-com drivel
Remotely watchable, but uses every romance comedy trope in the book to get to its very predictable conclusion. Because, yes Virginia...'happily every after ALWAYS begins with a proposal after a week's acquaintance. Also, about as 'Christmassy' as an Easter basket. Avoid it if you have brain cells you're fond retaining.
Some additional annoyances... The total lack of hygienic practices when working with bread for human consumption. Hopefully you like your sourdough with the faint flavor of hairspray, woolen coat and unwashed hands, because that's what you'll get at this fictitious bakery! ....
