The Mighty Boosh (2003)
Where do I begin?
Where do I even begin to describe The Mighty Boosh? I was first introduced to it via The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2006 which Noel Fielding was on with Russell Brand. That show was the highlight of 2006 in my opinion, but I was horrified to realise that only one of my friends had watched it, but I soon discovered that it wasn't such a bad thing. For that particular friend was obsessed with the Mighty Boosh, and who could blame her? She persuaded me to watch all the episodes on YouTube, and to this day, it is probably both the smartest and stupidest thing I have ever done.
To anyone who is not yet a Boosh fan, I would highly recommend watching the show from series 1 episode 1, for I tried watching series 1 episode 8 and series 2 episode 1 but didn't quite understand what was so good about the show. But watching from the start gives you a feel for the comedy and you will appreciate it more. Also, seeing stand-up done by Noel Fielding or Julian Barratt will help because a lot of their style is incorporated into their writing, and what a wonderful result. It is surreal comedy at its best.
If you want to know just how surreal it is, then let me explain. Stories in the episodes include a fighting a kangaroo, going into the jungle in the zoo to search for a man who has turned into cheese, getting 'trapped in a box by a cockney nutjob', getting kidnapped by a freaky merman and getting abused by your coconut girlfriend. It is very strange, but also very entertaining. Throughout the show there are songs, at least one in every episode. Don't let this put you off as the songs have titles like 'Calm a Llama Down' or 'The Soup Song' and all in all are very catchy, especially the Hitcher's song. My personal favourite would be 'Hippy Nonsense' from series 2 episode 1, Call of the Yeti, but the little non-musical numbers will stick in your head always.
Overall, I would say watch this show as you life will never be the same. You will constantly be quoting the moon, singing the songs and daydreaming about being Kodiak Jack trying to seduce Vince Noir, for he is definitely a very fine looking man, though Howard Moon isn't without his charm. The supporting cast are all excellent, especially Bob Fossil, played by Rich Fulcher. It may not be to everyone's taste, but it is the funniest thing I've ever seen.
The Panel (2003)
sheer brilliance!
I can honestly say this is the best thing RTÉ has ever created. It features some of Ireland's most hilarious comedians. Personally I feel the best pairings are Colin Murphy and Neil Delamere, and Ed Byrne and Andrew Maxwell. Pure comic genius they are. Dara O'Briain is an excellent host, much better than Colin Murphy, who doesn't let the other panellists talk enough. But luckily he doesn't host that often. Anywayz, the funniest thing about the show is that it is completely unscripted. It is literally 5 comedians speaking incoherently about the week and put a very humorous twist on everything, for example: 'I paid 50,000 and all I got was this lousy Taoiseach' said by Dara. Hilarious. The guests aren't often that good except for Jason Byrne. He isn't such a good panelist though. The best by far are Ed Byrne, Andrew Maxwell, Colin Murphy, Neil Delamere and Jimmy Carr. What's good about Carr is that the Irish jokes often go over his head. The token women are never all that good except for Pauline Mc Glynn. I would highly recommend this show to anyone as it is the best 50 minutes of every week.
The Big Fat Quiz of the Year (2006)
Best thing on the telly in 2006
When I saw the line-up to this show, I thought immediately 'I'm going to watch it.' Jimmy Carr was hosting, and there were such hilarious contestants; Jonathen Ross, Noel Fielding (who I discovered on Wossy), the one from Little Britain, and of course Russell Brand, my new favourite comedian. From the very start I was laughing my head off. It was so hilariously funny, especially the 'disadvantaged children'. Whoever's idea it was to put Noel Fielding and Russell Brand together deserves an award for outstanding contribution to comedy (if there is one). The two worked so well together, and were so wonderfully weird and cute together, you couldn't help but love them. I was so glad they beat Rob and David because David's spoilt child act was really getting on my nerves by the end and I really wanted to see him lose. I didn't see the point of Cat Deely, though. She just sat there and said nothing. Highlights of the show were Jimmy dancing, Noel's 'Well we put wine gums, envy, and we finished it off with pieces of rainbow', when Noel and Russell got the 22 points for one question and the Guy Gomar bit, especially 'Can Noel and I play ourselves in the corridor scene?' It was the funniest thing I seen all year and I highly recommend searching for videos on it. It was legendary. 10/10
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Learn to dance and have the time of your life!
When young Frances 'Baby' Houseman goes to summer camp with her family, she never expected to have so much fun! One night, after wandering away from a resort activity, she stumbles upon a all night dance party with Johnny Castle and other fellow dancers. Quickly enthralled by the raunchy dance moves, 'Baby' is eager to learn when she has to fill in for Penny just so she and Johnny don't lose their jobs at the resort. But young 'Baby' soon finds herself in a sticky situation; she has fallen in love with a man she knows her father will never approve of. However, when Johnny is accused of stealing wallets, it is up to 'Baby' to confirm his alibi by admitting that she was with him the night they were taken. Johnny is fired anyway for getting involved with a visitor, but quickly realises what a mistake it was leaving 'Baby'. He comes back with that famous line 'No one puts Baby in a corner' and they show the resort exactly what they're made of.
An amazing film, perfect for a girly night in. With groovy tunes, inspiring dances and a story that will make you feel all warm inside, this has got to be the greatest film of all time! **********
