The Silent Sea (2021)
Enjoyable with some flaws
I did enjoy this series, it kept me intrigued from start to finish.
The good: interesting plot line, beautiful visuals (I especially liked the scenes near the end - which I can't describe without spoilers), pretty good acting, and good suspense.
The bad: some baffling actions by the crew, certain scenes were too slow, Dr Song's character was overly flat and morose, and it had some plot holes.
Overall: this does rate a watch and most people should enjoy it. If they have a season 2 I hope the creators will be more careful about the technology aspects and increase the plausibility of character actions.
Swedish Dicks (2016)
Funny, silly and quirky with heart
This show just gets funnier and has become one of my favourites. I love the two Swedish leads and of course it's great to have Keanu cameos! The rest of the cast are good too. I don't understand the bad reviews, maybe they don't get the humour or they didn't give it enough of a chance. I really hope there will be more seasons.
Le manoir (2017)
A fun horror movie not to be taken seriously
This movie won't win awards but it's a lot of silly fun with a twist ending. The suspense takes a while to get going, the humour is admittedly very low brow and the tropes expected, and I don't know if it's a horror movie parody or just a mixed genre horror/comedy, but either way, if you are after some amusing, light entertainment then look no further.
Cake Walk (2011)
Entertaining show with cool cakes
I think this show is pretty good overall. I like the different wedding themes and the interesting cake designs. Some cakes are really amazing. I don't mind the male judges but the woman judge is overly harsh and critical. I liked her at first but then she became too picky and condescending. And why can she never taste the chocolate? So strange. I'm not fussed on the nerve wracking 60 second cake walk, I'm always scared a cake will go flying. Give the poor designers a break. In general I like the show, it's entertaining to watch and I hope they make more.
Altered Carbon (2018)
1st season 10/10, 2nd season maybe a 6/10...
The first season was gripping, visually stunning, interesting, Joel Kinnaman (need I say more?), addicting and so on. The second season.....so far very disappointing. Has lost everything that made the first one special. At least they still have Poe although the new heartless Kovacs is doing his best to make Poe reboot which would likely delete his memory (weren't they friends before?). Season one Kovacs had intensity with strength and underlying goodness, new Kovacs just seems one dimensional and angry all the time. None of the new characters are likeable in any way which makes it hard to care about what happens to them. I hope the season improves.
Cyber Bride (2019)
Fun and doesn't take itself seriously
This is a bizarre low budget but fun film. You can tell it doesn't take itself seriously. For example when you see the robots preassembled they have very stiff plastic mannequin-like limbs with fused fingers and toes but then assembled suddenly they're completely soft and human looking. I'm certain that was intentional. The sound quality is terrible, and the plot is ridiculous but we watched the whole thing and had some laughs and overall enjoyed it. You have to go into it realising it's cheesy, then you can enjoy it.
The Canterville Ghost (1996)
Enjoyable, family friendly, somewhat hokey movie. Patrick Stewart shines as always.
This movie was quite enjoyable. Patrick Stewart is great in everything and this was no exception, he transformed his ghost character to be engaging and sympathetic. Neve brought charm and warmth. The rest of the cast were pretty good, some better than others. I didn't give it a full 10 stars because certain scenes were a bit too hokey, eg. the portrait scene with Sir Canterville and Neve (anyone who saw it will know what I mean - harks back to hammy 80s photos) and the father character was a little too smarmy and annoying. There will be no plot surprises but all up it was an interesting and entertaining 1.5 hour movie.
Room 33 (2009)
Not bad....
I did enjoy it to some degree. Started off with promise and somewhat interesting premise and characters but started going south there. The big reveal was a bit disappointing and there were too many gaping plot holes. For example, I initially enjoyed Nelson's character the most because he was entertaining and I thought his skittishness would keep him safe, but in one very uncharactistic act of bravado he confronts the demon ghost dad and gets killed. That was lazy plot work and a let down. We never get an explanation about why the boyfriend near the end was shot dead by the hillbilly guy. Or why Roxy's uncle was lurking around the asylum ruins alone in the middle of the night searching for her. And why did demon ghost want to kill his own brother (or if it was Roxy controlling him, why did she want her uncle killed)? And if Roxy was psychocitc and murdered her dad in the first place, why was her dad going around and murdering other people on her behalf, or was he just a projection from her mind as she herself said, and it was actually her murdering people? Certain things just did not make any sense. A few tweaks in the plot and story line could have produced a really good flick.
What Lies Beneath (2000)
One of my favorite scary movies!
Firstly, a movie with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer is going to be great anyways! They are wonderful actors! But this movie also has a lot of mystery and genuine suspense! To give you an idea of how scary some scenes were - I went to see it at the cinema with my mom, and there was a woman next to the aisle (an empty seat between her and my mom). During one especially startling scene everyone in the audience jumped and got scared, but the aisle woman (who we didn't know) shrieked in absolute terror, reached over to my startled mom (clutching on to her for dear life), and practically landed in her lap!! (too funny!) she apologised profusely afterwards, but we understood and were sympathetic because the movie had frightened us as well! An overall excellent movie! This movie is also good if you prefer scary suspense instead of slash and gore like most horror movies these days!
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Entertaining
I loved the original Battlestar Galactica, but I feel that for the remake they had no choice but to go a very different direction from the original series. If they tried to replicate the original - firstly: why bother, you can watch the original, secondly, everyone would be comparing every character and story line to the original. Could there ever be any actors that could compare to the originals? No, of course not, so they had to make them different. The special effects were very good, I almost felt like I was really watching them in outer space. The storyline was intriguing and different. They had reminders of the old series with the music and the fighter planes, etc. And overall it was a fun series to watch! people have been much too hard on it!
