Waterland (1992)
8/10
A movie that warms me, it's so empty and windy.
24 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film in 1990s on a cable movie channel. I loved the narration. Jeremy Irons has the voice and handsome nature to pull you in to a drab, dark cloudy Pittsburg Pennsylvania in 1974. I was very interested in girls when I was young. I had no interest in history until I was in my mid 20's. It's difficult being a student and having so many questions, so teaching can turn you inside out. Mr. Irons acting is so rich, and the stories seem out of touch since he is a history teacher that teaches from the heart of his youth. Some scenes are shocking and brilliant one of his students in the classroom was unclothed, a flashback or fascination? Waterland takes the entire classroom on a British motorcoach from back in the war? So awesome. A good storyteller can make you feel like you're really there. His love for Mary, his love for students who will listen, even Ethan Hawk enters his mind to clearly understand the Brewery. I hope someday another movie is made with this fusion of brilliance when telling the story, and transporting the viewer, keeping us enthralled, wrapped up in his world. Lena Headey is so true and brave. The end is so difficult for me when Mary is running away, and he chases after her. I could not understand if they were back in Britan or was that him in his world thinking he's "losing her" as Mary goes off into the Fens. So sad, raw, losing someone who is still there. I love this film.

I took a chance at getting afraid. NOT a UFO fan.
27 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with a lot of the reviews, except the uneducated people that love "Saw" movies, or Fast n Furious. Small budget films are way more fun than Spielberg or Cameron films if your a goer at simplicity and rich camera shots. I loved the time period. Back then Soviet fear, strange lights in New Mexico, the fifties were a time when you could scare a town or county with a phone call about lights in the sky. I agree the fast talking cigarette smoking character in the beginning drove me nuts, but if you can get through the first 15 minutes, you will be rewarded. Also it made my hair stand on end when he starts playing the tape recorder in the back of the car, and the driver and passenger start behaving weirdly, man that was eerie. I dislike UFO movies, I get the chills. I also loved Sierra McCormick's glasses the style then was plain but sexy. I'm never living in New Mexico. Well done.

This movie is hits to the center of man.
13 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man kind is totally out of wack. As it always is throughout history. Wars, famine, deconstruction of families, and the construction of psychological warfare people invent to fight back at horror. The selfish and uneducated can see films that are for fun. This film is more of a history lesson through the eyes of a family. The daughter gets hit hard with media during the 60's and asks why, how, what for... I was taken away by this movie and the characters. I felt uncomfortable with the father scenes, in the end all he wanted was the love of his daughter, its undeniable and everlasting. The mother had it all and jealousy? It seems all the weight of raising a family in a comfortable home rests on the shoulders of one man. The times we live in today are bad. Like back then. Especially mental illness and guns. American Pastoral is a movie for our times. The evil mask Mary wears, the masks we wear today, the blindness and horror our world creates. Teenagers need guidance and to be free. I would not want to raise a child in todays world. Nor then. Underrated, heartfelt, a fair lesson to the unfair world.

I was there in 1977 and felt it again.
31 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is way more funny than the slog of Star Wars films. Solo is crafty in its dialogue, almost crude at times and the droids, aliens, monsters, opposing forces, et cetera give new life to Star Wars. I thought the pace and action of the movie is extra ordinary, with seat of your chair sequences. The landscapes and digital artistry at many moments in the film make you feel like a different galaxy exists, Some of the original sounds from the original Star Wars are used to keep the older nerds attune and engaged throughout. More than one Wookie, and Droids with crushes, gargling mud to sound like Chewy...hilarious. There are double crosses, twists, great battle scenes, just enough gooey sap between Han and his main squeeze, the chess table of animated creatures, The Millennium falcons damage to show its been through asteroids, monster chases, gravity pits, this film was awesome and fun, and worth it. Now the Mandalorian? Life is good on this side of the Galaxy.

Election (1999)
8/10
Every part of High school. A great study of the election process awry.
3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I love the crap out of this movie. High school was a smelly hallway into discontent. Starting with waking up, adapting, and frogging working my asteroids off at 6am for the school chef. He was a Veteran from Korea. Boarding school was awesome. My heaven do I love the perfect arrangement and comparisons of morals and ethics to fruit and questioning the subjects we gather to be most important, yet admissible. One of my high school friends hooked up with a teacher. We all could tell. It's about Men and Woman respectively with compensation to being horney. Well Then, Thanks to the writer of this film. Just superior.

Stranger Things (2016–2025)
8/10
The 1980's were reborn with stranger things...
29 October 2019
I was 10 in 1980, which makes me very happy to say, because now I'm almost 50 and still can feel the emotions when I watch E.T. or Empire Strikes back, or Polterguist. I could give a crap about the accolades that Netfix receives. I wanted to write a comment because how much I loved the first season. Teenagers, mystery, explorer's, the imagination of kids back then were not left to devises and video games (sure I had Nintendo) but being young and having D&D parties with domino's pizza breath and braces. Adventure of the mind and a good bicycle. The kids in this show are excellent actors. Ryder and Harbour are good at making it feel as real for adults, and sadness with tears of joy and heartache. All around an excellent show. I'm gearing up for Halloween on Thursday with season two. Oh the girl, Millie Bobby Brown, my God is she a powerhouse of little words, and screams that give me the chills. Scary show at times, and funny. Great cast. Great tv.

Smokin' Aces (2006)
10/10
Awesome fast paced, terrifically edited, bloody, sexy mess.
5 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a story of a group of completely different hit men and hit woman that are hip to the street knowledge that Buddy "Aces" Israel, (five time Las Vegas showman of the year) has a 1 million dollar bounty on his head. My absolute favorite movie. I have watched this film about 20 times but only just recently started watching it like a drug or pill. I first watched this movie a couple of years after it was released. I was not a big movie fan from 2004-2008. My neighbor (female) asked it I'd ever seen "Smokin Aces" so we watched it together it was awesome but It fell off the list of my mental top 10, only to reemerge as one of my favorite movies of all time. Awesome array of characters and the actors who played the parts. Ryan Reynolds, Ray Liota, Alicia Keys, Chris Pine as the Tremor Brothers was great. The "Tremor Brothers" characters got developed into video game bad guys in the game "Borderlands" Anyway this movie is wild, bloody, sexy, fun, intricate, and moves like a missile through the hotel, detonating a huge ending that really makes Ryan Reynolds work admirable. I love Smokin aces. Oh and Ben Affleck is in it but gets wasted near the beginning, in one of the funniest parts of the movie, when Chris Pine Muppets Affleck while he is dead. Enjoy Smokin aces more than once.

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)
10/10
Good writing, good acting, sex, violence, war, back stabbing.
10 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This show is a little over hyped, but is worth watching. I never read the books. Fantasy is for total geeks, Excalibur is a great film. I enjoyed the first season, I was surprised by the brave woman who act in this show. Beautiful woman throughout. Families fight over nothing other than keeping blood lines thick, always attacking with shallow threats, and lies, and of course battles for castles, building armies, killing families, et cetera. The stories do have a historical feel. The production and cinematography are outstanding. The amount of interactions (dialog) is soaking at times, but I read that it's following the books closely. Do not get attached to the characters, they swoon in and out of the storyline, and then get murdered. There really is not much fantasy involved. Mostly terrible sword fighting, throat slashing, blood squirting...OK 1 giant, 3 dragons, a crap load of stories about past kings and laws and fables, and that sorta crap. Over all its good. EXCEPT - the second to last episode of season 3, has some of the most violent bloody horrific scenes since Scarface. It really shows how savage humans can be. I was totally taken off guard more than three times... this show can twist you inside/out that's for sure.

I love this film, the music, story, and acting.
16 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy this movie, the acting and cinematography. All of the characters are interesting and believable. The film is slow in the beginning. I enjoy the sound track and the sunny hills and valley. Boy meets girl. Girl have over protected father. It's very simple. That's why I like it so much. It has a twisted feel throughout the entire movie. I noticed that this movie bombed at the box office. I do not understand why? This movie also does not make sense until you get further in. ERW is so off the charts beautiful. So is the main character. There is a shot in the movie that uncovers Norton's shoulder tattoo, if your a music fan from the early 80's its a dead giveaway that the main character is not who he seems to be. I like the ending and the sadness they both feel towards questions unanswered.

Gravity (2013)
9/10
A superior film about 3 countries Space stations.
12 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I jut finished watching this movie at home and I am so exhausted. The movie goes from terrorizing to deadly to no hope to a little hope. Anyway I love reading other peoples reviews. Most people are so upset with the laws of gravity during the film. Sure, not all laws are met in this movie. Critics were bellowing about the wrench making noise when Ryan is doing her space walk work. WTF - did you want a silent movie like the opening titles said? ITS Hollywood- actually its British Hollywood so my hats off to the London for doing this film. The Director got bashed for writing Sandra's emotional consequences while adrift in space. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? Don't you have any soul. This movie was exciting, graphically and technically beautiful. Being above Earth or on the moon Makes you see how small and wonderful life is and that's what the movie was about. Also about not giving up in life...which most of the reviewers did. I really liked it, there are a couple of mistakes... like most astronauts get to know one another pretty darn well before space flight and walk. Clooney's asking Mission specialist about her personal life was off, But in space during emergencies you have to keep up dialog to keep calm. Anyway I really liked this movie and Sandra Bullock has never been a big favorite of mine, until now. She was great. She is the movie.

The Thing (I) (2011)
7/10
A good monter movie - not as good or gruesome as Carpenters
20 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this movie. The special effects and animation are terror iffic. The story is close to John Carpenters "The thing" from 1982 with a few changes in the story line from the original. Well OK a lot of changes. Scientists in the remote Antarctic discover a space ship, the occupant (monster) is frozen trying to escape the craft. Anyway, the best parts of this film are when the guy on the chopper who is infected starts to change. I WISH they had spent a little more time sneaking shots of his face and or body starting to change in to the monster. With tech effects, the film makers could have really gotten the fear factor into the audience buy delaying the chest busting tentacle, gutt octopus, then the chopper just spins off into the distance. I will not go much further on about the movie but I thought it was really good. The lead woman was good also.. gory, scary, tense. (The original was more about isolation and distrust among the scientists, which triples the intensity until the blood test scene when their tied to the couches- 1982 version) It still hold swell as a good horror/ monster/suspense film.

Well written and photographed
4 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Love is a dung heap. I like the opening, the long drive, steer the car Ethan!! The lunch scene is so inviting. Conversations regarding writing, love, loss, sex. The kitchenette is so bland, the vegetables light up the room. The beauty of the country side. Friends and family, food, drink. Walking in the ruins of Greece. I thought Ethan Hawk was wrong for the role. He always grows on me. Diversified man. I felt Julie Delpy was strong. She is resentful, sexy and gritty, pulverizing his words with her own. She gives in.... to be what she did not want to be. Servant, wife, tool. Maybe an unhappy ending would have more been more solid. A few of the lines in the movie I had to look up for their origin. Most of the film is shot on long uncut shots, then condenses into tighter groups. What a relief? It helps wrap you into the characters, they are mature and honest, it makes the whole movie worth it. A great movie worth seeing.
