Big on name, low on content
24 February 2015
I was having high expectations from this movie, but it was low on content. Only thing I liked was unexpected climax, which no one can expect even to a slightest bit.

Only Nawaz acted well in the film. And now he is the crowd puller for the movie. People are going with word of mouth publicity to the theaters just because of him.

I would say it is actually his movie. He is the hero err... villain err.. hero err... villain. Don't know what to call him, a hero or a villain ? You too would be confused after seeing the film.

Cheap vulgarity wasn't needed, but producer/director tried to bring Hollywood touch, but it wasn't needed at all.

Go just to see Nawaz and nothing else. Suspense thrilling quotient is far less than Johny Gaddar. Songs are not shown in full and are background songs.

A half baked , Paisa-Wasool movie.

Not a feather in Shankar's cap
18 January 2015
Shankar is like Amir Khan, who is always looked forward to. But this time he is not up-to the mark. This movie could be watched or could be missed without regrets. Shankar has given us Indian, Aparichit, Nayak, Robot, and these movies are a must for all movie lovers. I is no where near any of these.

Movie's story offers nothing new, and doesn't talk about the corrupt system of India like Shankar's earlier movies. It seems Shankar likes the idea of revenge very much and uses it in various forms in all his movies. In Indian Kamal Hasan (Senapati) takes revenge, in Aparichit Vikram takes revenge, in Nayak Anil Kapoor is after the corrupt.

Movie starts with heroine getting married, and a stranger comes and abducts her. Whom she was getting married and why remains a suspense till the end. Suspense quotient is good. Chinese visuals are very good, and this is probably first Indian film to shoot china beautifully.

Action scene which is shot completely over roof tops using only bicycles is awesome. Last action sequence shot in train is very good too, and reminds of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja.

Movie is built up very nicely which is a good thing to mention. No compromise with story build up stretches movie over 3 hours.

Dialogs are good. Acting is good by all actors. Like all his movies, computer graphics is used in this movie too in a fresh way.

Very disappointed to see Shankar resorting to cheap B grade movie tactics at various places.

Music is awful, and Vishal Shekhar can give million times better music than A.R. Rehman.

It's not a family movie, without any social message, but a fair entertainer.

Ugly (2013)
7/10
Senseless end kills the film
26 December 2014
Brutal ending tells the psych of A.K. End of the film remains in the mind for a long time after watching the film. It is so ugly that I couldn't stop myself from starting the review with the end first.

No matter what you are trying to convey the message, the ending should be handled with care.

Film is hard hitting and while watching AK's films you constantly feel the znnnnnnnzzzzznnnnnnn......... a current running in your body. All characters are ugly, and can fall to lower levels without any thought. This world is not so good, and has both good and ugly sides to it. One needs to be aware of evils in our society. Parents need to take good care of their child or it can be too late. Never leave your child alone, never ever, neither in home nor in market or otherwise.

Movie comes with some very important messages. First : Never marry unless you have a consistent source of income, Second : Never grow your family unless you have a decent bank balance, Third : Never leave your kids alone and give them enough balanced knowledge about how to protect themselves, Fourth : If anyhow you have grown your family, then stop experimenting with life and settle down at any cost.

Ronit Roy is terrific and is one of those many under-rated actors. Hopefully this movie will bring more good roles to him.

Thriller quotient is very high and keeps you edge of the seat all through. Right before start of the movie you start feeling goose bumps. Dub this movie in English, and you have a Hollywood pot boiler.

Inspector who supports Ronit Roy is terrific. Humor is limited and up-to the mark, and actually makes you laugh.

Watch only if you can handle ugliness for more than 2 hours. And leave the theater before the end. You will come to know when you will reach the end.

My only appeal to AK : Always keep endings happy !

PK (2014)

High on expectations low on content
20 December 2014
PK arrives from space to theaters near you.

This is no suspense as movie starts with this incident. Movie looked like OMG part 2. OMG was terrific backed by solid script , solid dialogs , and superb Paresh Rawal acting. PK is backed by half baked script, with very weak dialogs, and not so good acting. In OMG , you can't think of some one better than Paresh sir, in PK any one could have acted better than AK. Music is OK, as there are far less songs in the movie than the entire album. Cheap vulgarity was not needed in the otherwise clean movie. Why AK and directors are hell bent on such road-side vulgarity is beyond comprehension. Comedy scenes are good and fits well in the story line. The starting of the movie is terrific and I should say out of the world.

We expected a lot from talented director like Raju Hirani who gave us Munna Bhai series. But he failed miserably this time.

Improvement areas ----------------

PK can fetch whats going on in your mind by touching you. Imagine PK cant touch anyone for more than few seconds, and to understand Indian culture, he touches people of different languages, culture etc. He gets his mind messed up, and start speaking mixture of languages while talking.

Movie talks only about GOD. Indian society is full of evils. It must have tackled lots of other issues too like corrupt politicians, black money.

Burden --------

Cheap vulgarity enough to keep kids away, and so family away.

A one time watch, and after watching it, watch Oh My God(Paresh Rawal) if you haven't seen it.

Shankar's yet another chiller
2 December 2014
Shankar is my favorite film maker. His movies have speed, tightly woven script. His movies are frame by frame perfect. He hits at corrupt system hard with varying backdrops.

This one too hits at system. But the treatment is diff from all his other movies. Acting is extremely good. Sharp camera work which is the trademark of Shankar is terrific in this movie too.

I am not in the habit of disclosing story in my reviews. So I would say that story is very different and is not quite common. Movie has some very light resemblance to his own old creation Hindustani(Kamal Hasan) where he uses some old Indian traditional art to tackle corruption. In this movie too he uses some thing which is part of very old Indian culture.

Movie has suspense which keeps audience at the edge of their seats.

Thank you Shankar for these movies. May god give you unlimited energy and age and you keep making terrific movies. Eagerly waiting for Amitabh, Rajnikanth and Kamal Hasan in single movie together.

Meaningful climax saves the movie
28 November 2014
The main problem with suspense movies is they keep you engaged till the end but 90% of the movies fail in handling the climax well. This movie handles a difficult subject with extreme ease.

This movie has a paranormal background but no where it goes over-board and keeps the suspense extremely well. Audience didn't even realize that what they are seeing is actually something else. Aamir khan decided to do this movie, so there was lot of expectations from this movie. This movie delivered it.

Acting is real. Rani Mukherjee was Aamir's wife is excellent. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is sheer class. He is next in sequence of Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Girish Karnad, Sanjeev Kumar.

Plot has enough twists to keep audience thinking in different variations.

I can't think of any more justified ending than this one's.

Happy Ending (2014)
7/10
Fresh adult romantic comedy
21 November 2014
A producer/director will never ask you and me before making a film. They will make what they like. And we audience have to judge them on their own merits. Film is made under Illuminati Films' banner which has given us Love Aj Kal, Cocktail, Go Goa Gone. More about this banner can be read at Wikipedia.

Happy Ending isn't meant for masses. It is a romantic comedy, but there was hardly any romance as such. Comedy never went over-board, and was very real. Acting was just perfect and was very lively. Characters were bit unorthodox which brought freshness, a book writer, a wanna be movie maker who likes to bring Hollywood touch to Bollywood movie, a hubby who is controlled by his wife, a mad funny girlfriend, a stud. All actors fits perfectly in the role. Full marks for choosing Ranveer Shorey, and Kalki for their roles. The life shown is what actually spent by young Indians living abroad in US. Shooting is very good , done probably entirely in US. Music is very good but not all songs are shown in the movie which was a good decision. Govinda is good in a cameo. But his role in Kill Dill has more punch and spice than this one. Characters use common urban language with words like Kiss, Sex etc. Don't watch this movie with family.

Movie comes out with a simple but powerful and effective message that marriage is a reality and sooner you realize this, the better for you. Else you might keep looking for yet another chance and another and another and so on wasting your youth-chances all your life.

Happy ending means putting your running-for-romance habit to an end and starting next phase of life which is married life.

... and yes there is one more Saif Ali Khan. But who is he ? A double role, or a hypothetical character ?

Kill Dil (2014)
6/10
Superb dialogs + super acting
14 November 2014
What will you call a girl who pushes her father down ...

Kill dill finally arrives. It arrived in style or not ? Well yes ! Story is routine. What makes it different is killer dialogs and brilliant acting by every one involved in the movie. I was skeptical about Govinda. But he delivered / looked / acted brilliantly. Hard to think some one else in his role and justifying it too. Movie completely belongs to Ranveer Singh. Guy is super actor and dashing. He and his partner in the movie "Ali Zafar" are here to stay. Parineeti Chopra is blunt and fits perfectly in the role. She is a good actress who blends both urban style and traditional Bollywood emotions. Only her voice could be a dampener in the long run just like Rani Mukherjee.

Movie maintains its high constant pace. There are hardly any over the board emotional scenes or big typical Bollywood drama which keeps the audience engaging. With near-no dull moment, movie is expected to have decent success and could be seen twice.

After Saathiya (2002), Bunty Aur Babli(2005), Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007) Kill Dill is likely to be Shaad Ali's best movie as a director. But seeing his background much more is expected from him. He has acted as assistant director with Maniratnam, so he can deliver surely. His earlier movies lacked the punch. Kill Dill fills this void perfectly.

Unpolished script + Fair acting
8 November 2014
3 friends are in search of a lady partner to satisfy their ever long lust. So they try various things from local farmhouse to bangkok, and gets landed in between which is Mauritius, and story unfolds in unexpected way and finishes in unexpected way too. Rest is suspense.

Acting is undoubtedly very good by all actors involved. Akshay is no suspense as he is shown in all promos. How he is involved in this story is very unexpected too. Technically film is very good, music is super good. Costumes, sets are lively and colorful. Dialogs are very good too. But after watching the film you will feel that you actually liked the film and something remains missing.

That something can be attributed to unpolished script. First half is senseless and one might wonder what was achieved in first half ? If one watches second half only then also that will have same effect.

Improvisation could have been done in first half like how they come to Mauritius can be made like a chase and run thriller. Guys chasing a gal , gal goes to Mauritius and these guys lands there too but meets another gal to fall for. Bit more speed was needed in first half taking the climax to much higher speed.

Overall it is one time watch for your money.

Happy New Year (I) (2014)
6/10
Healthy family neat-n-clean entertainer
1 November 2014
Good actors make an ordinary film work !

After seeing this film you will know the value of established actors like Shahrukh, Abhishek, Boman Irani, Deepika, Jackey dada. If this film were having some unknown/ordinary actors it would have tanked badly.

Movie reminds me of DHOOM-1 which was awful but for some sacred reasons worked. I thought about what worked for movies like these and concluded that these movies restrict themselves to the central theme of the

movie and never deviate from that. HNY is one such movie.

Movie is just like yet another Sholay like theme where a central person creates a team for a task. Numerous films have been made on this theme in India with several variations keeping Sholay's theme intact. In HNY too,

our King Khan creates a team for a hiest to take revenge for his father.

Locations, sets are big. Movie is colorful. Dubai is shown beautifully. Deepika steals the show in her unusual role. All are OK, but more weight and time is given to Shahrukh and Deepika.

And now the negative traits :

Characters were not polished at all. If a character is peculiar, then some decent build up must be there to bring more weight. Mere 2 minute verbal background story is not enough to bring out excitement.

This one should learn from notable film makers like Manmohan Desai(Amar Akbar Anthony), Late Mukul Anand(Hum), David Dhawan(Aankhen, 1993). These are multi-starrer films and every single character was

introduced and raised beautifully.

To bring out a hair raising heist is not an easy task. Remember Anil-Kapoor in Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Jwell Thief ? Farah Khan does every thing right but fails to create an edge.

Expecting more polished movie next time.

A true prime entertainer
21 October 2014
Amitabh dancing with cup of beer and singing "Jumma Chumma" ignited so much spark among music lovers and movie goers that its Audio cassettes were sold like anything. The typical music by Laxmi-Pyare brought tremendous melody and excellent lyrics making its songs worth every penny. The hype which its "Jumma Chumma" created years before its release was every worth. Movie was a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

Movie is a case study for all movie fans regarding exactly how a multi- starrer and prime entertainer should be made. Right blend of comedy at right time added all spice to an already good film.

Govinda, Rajnikanth provided equal support to Amitabh led movie. Villains of this movie were actually of another type which we haven't seen before. So lot of things happened which we didn't expect them to be so.

Lovely entertainer, awesome music, lovely acting. Lovely camera work, locations. 10/10 .

Haider (2014)
10/10
Constant speed
12 October 2014
Haider is all about Vishal Bharadwaj, Kashmir, and Tabu. Tabu gives her career best performance. She was terrific in Maqbool, and she is a step ahead in Haider.

Movie maintains its speed and rhythm throughout the movie, and never loses its path. Vishal Bharadwaj emerges as master of non-linear movie making. Haider's story moves in non-linear fashion. Scene breaks in between, followed by something else, then when you completely forgets that left over scene, it gets completed. Thus all broken links are slowly made up as movie progresses. Every single set is very carefully chosen leaving nothing behind. You can't think of anything more than this.

Kashmir is shown from deep inside, even where a tourist can't go. Thick dense forest and you see children playing cricket with wickets made of stones.

Music is awesome, have tremendous depth. All songs are not used in the movie, so you need to listen to them online with quality sound system to fully experience them. "Aao na" is used in the movie and will blow you over.

This film belongs to Oscar and Tabu must get an Oscar for this. Nothing less.

Watch this movie in theater else you will regret for the rest of your life.

Excellent movie
20 November 2013
Movie is fantabulous by all means. India is a developing country not a developed one like many western countries. So, if you are expecting a scifi thriller like Hollywood, then of course it will take time to reach that level. But considering all the things, I would rate Krrish3 as extremely good movie. Superb plot, superb execution. Rakesh roshan never tried to get away with by chalta hai attitude. Movie is made with big hardwork which can be easily seen. Marks are given for hardwork and considering all the means including money available to make such thrillers, I am extremely happy that India is slowly getting at par with Hollywood.

Must must watch. Fully entertaining.
