The Hangover (2009)
Oh Dear...
Saw this on a BA jet flying to, coincidentally, Las Vegas on the day the Underpants Bomber roasted his nuts and if anything it proved there are worse things than a three hour delay and intrusive body searches.
I understand airlines edit the movies they show but I can only assume every funny line in the uncut version was accompanied by gratuitous sex scenes, nudity or extreme violence because they sure weren't in the version I saw. The only mildly amusing line was Jeffery Tambors comment about what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas at the beginning.
Predictable line up of Groom, alpha male, hen pecked nerd and fat beardy loser take the Father-in-Laws prized vintage Mercedes (uh-oh!) to Vegas for the stag night and after a booze and drug fuelled rampage(which you don't see) try to piece together what happened in an attempt to find the missing groom.
Clues are provided so easily that it makes Scooby Doo look like a major forensic investigation. Along the way there is an encounter with a camp Asian gangster (yawn!), a tiger in the bathroom that's acted out in way that suggests it's an everyday occurrence, a deus ex-machina scene where the beardy fat loser is now some kind of Rainman at Blackjack followed by a "oh I remember where we put him" ending so lame it's almost in a wheelchair.
Worst of all Mike Tyson is roped in as the Tigers owner in a scene that goes nowhere. It's debatable whether he is more ashamed about being a convicted rapist or acting in this rubbish.
Very Very Poor!
Hippies (1999)
A neglected masterpiece
Hippies is possibly one of the funniest programs ever shown on TV. Rays East German car in Muddy Hippies almost gave me an asthma attack I was laughing so much. How cack like Two Pints of Lager... can be on almost constant rotation when Hippies doesn't even appear on DVD beggars belief. Julian Rhind Tutts effortlessly cool Alex is the perfect foil to Simon Peggs spokesman of a generation, Ray, while the rest of the cast are also excellent, especially Rays silently suffering father. Try and catch this on the late night comedy channels - its worth not being able to get up for work the next morning.
