Shrinking (2023)
Funny and heartfelt
It's funny and it has heart without turning stupid.
The acting is really good. All the characters get enough air time that you get to know things about them and care about their wins and loses.
I enjoyed watching with my husband, so I think it works as a show for the whole family.
I really wish there were more epiaodes .... and I hope they get to do a second season.
The last moment from the last episode is interesting and I am.really curious if they have a second season what they do with that last scene.
So go watch this series and also way to go Apple TV, you really keep on delivering!!!
Women Talking (2022)
Amazing movie
I just came back home from seeing this movie.
For me it was such a moving, well crafted movie. I have to admit I cried for like half the movie.
The setting of the action is very particular and the general feeling is one of allegory (in the sense that it is not a realistic portrait of life happening, but rather it's a setup specifically made for having a conversation).
Maybe for people who read/see/discuss feminist literature/movies it is nothing new and might feel boring.
But for me, I felt it was such a great way of talking about women, men, their relationships and mutual shortcomings, religion, what you must sometimes loose for gaining something not very well defined, like freedom.
Overall, I loved the acting and the cinematography and the movie felt really short.
The Midnight Club (2022)
No actually horror, but quite good overall
I work with cancer patients as my job and I resonated a lot with what this series tries to do (well, what I think it tries to do .... I might be wrong).
Us, humans, are afraid of death, are frustrated with death, are angry at the randomness of death. All this just amplifies by 100% when it comes to the end of life of young humans. At my job, I see everyday how people try to find all sorts of remedies with the hope that one of them is the magic cure ....and of course none of it ever is.
In their desire to find a magic cure, a lot of people bump into all sorts of grifters and crazies. Sometimes all they loose is money, other times they may even cut their own life sort.
I think this series captures this struggle with the end of life, in a way that manages to not be too preachy and also manages to not scare away with its subject matter (people are a lot more likely to watch a horror series than they are to watch a series about the way too human fear of death).
Overall this series felt true to me and also easy to watch despite the uncomfortable subject.
Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
script written by someone in kindergarten
I really feel the need to write a review, but this movie was silly beyond belief.
The dialogue and actions are such that only someone in kindergarten could have written this script. I understand that the characters are teenagers and I do remember how to was to be one. But while teenagers might be moody and not the best communicating, the are not this silly.
So if you do not care that the story is incredibly silly and the movie also has 2 hours (because it takes time to not build a coherent narrative) than, by all means, watch it.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Solid show
I read the reviews and I was on the fence about whether to watch the show or not.
Finally I did and I actually enjoyed it quite a lot.
Does it contain some politics, as many reviews complain? Yes, but it sure is not as bad as some people are trying to make it. It is not the most subtle of shows, true, but come on, it is a MCU tv show not some Russian art movie ...
For me the show strengh has been the acting, the chemistry among the actors, the banter and the core idea. And I just loved Sebastian Stan, got to admit it.
To me, the core idea of the show is about power - who has it really, how it can belong to one person or to a system, how it can corupt but not necesarily. And for an MCU show I think it does a good job at actually having a point.
The show weakness was the villan... because we are supposed to believe that the person being the main villan managed to build this huge system but nothing in the story actually shows us that this is true ... it's a lot of tell instead of show, which is the opposite of good writing ... and the actress playing the villain is not all that convincing...
But I liked the set up for season 2 ... looks like a much better bad girl will take the main stage ...
Enola Holmes (2020)
It's a delight!
I genuinely enjoyed the time I spent watching this movie!
It is definitely a children oriented movie. So watch it with this in mind. It has great cinematography, lovely colors, good actors, fun times.
But if you are looking for some sort of adult drama, look somewhere else. This is just some innocent delightful fun time!
Handsome Devil (2016)
warm and fuzzy
OMG ... a movie that had 2 attractive people as leads and it managed to be about friendship and about being a human being, instead of being about getting a boyfriend ... I am amazed!!
The movie in itself is not some great masterpiece, but it is heartfelt and it gives you warm, fuzzy feelings and the leads are attractive ( what do you want, I never said i am not shallow ). And I am truly in awe when a movie manages to be about friendship for real and not use friendship just to somehow end up being about romance.
Roswell, New Mexico (2019)
so much better after the 1st episode
When I heard about a remake, I was like " thanks ! no!" .
Then I saw some photos and some talk on twitter and I thought seeing an episode won't kill me. After the first episode, I didn't feel like watching the rest. But a friend insisted to give it one more try and now, at episode 10, I am so pleasantly surprised.
I mean, it's the CW, I don't really think mature and following through with the plot lines and stuff making sense, it's really their strongest suit. But it is in this show .....I am not saying it is some big masterpiece, but the characters develop, the relationships develop in a natural way, actual conversations are had ....
So, if you look for good looking people in an actual sweet and somewhat mature plot, while still light enough to help you forget the day, do try it!
Inside Out (2015)
Excellent !
I just saw this movie last night and I immensely enjoyed it. I am not sure if kids would enjoy it as much, since a lot of the dialogue requires some knowledge that might not be for kids. I did not understand why so many of the reviewers said it was a sad movie. I thought that it was an emotional movie, but in no way sad. It is a story about growing up and this, by definition, has bitter sweet moments - that's the point of the movie. It's not a comedy movie and I don't understand why so many people complained that they did not laugh enough. I thought almost all concepts presented were funny, but still I would not say the point of the movie was to get belly laughs. But come on, there are so many nice and subtle fun comments. I totally recommend this movie, if you are the kind that enjoys cartoons and if you are not looking for belly laughs, but for a nice, warm, funny , smart story !
Rectify (2013)
Amazing !
I just finished watching this story. For me it unfolded much like a book would, taking it's time. It's subject i had seen done before, more or less. But the way the writers of this show approached the character of Daniel is truly unique. We find out more and more about his inner world as each episode progresses. He is intelligent and articulate and all messed up and we can see the man he could have been without the story that marked his life. All the other characters are interesting. I just can't wait for the next season and i hope the writers can keep up the good work and the network allows them the time and money to really tell this story to the end.
Filantropica (2002)
worth watching!
i totally liked this movie. not because it was good or bad but because it was the first Romanian movie that seemed to actually be a movie. the rest of Romanian movies seem to be theatrical plays that got caught on camera. and i could actually understand what they were saying because usually in Romanian movies the sound is so bad it makes you wish you had subtitles. so maybe this movie was not a subtle one, or a very hard to understand one, but it was definitely easy to watch( which is a big deal for a Romanian movie),close to reality ( unfortunately) and had some unforgettable lines that have became part of the popular culture. maybe if you are not Romanian you don't get what the big deal is, and why this movie is a big accomplishment and maybe it looks like other eastern European movies which would not be so surprising since we did kind of had he same history. but it is an important movie because it manages to be different: it's well directed, well filmed and it's entertaining! so hopefully the next Romanian films will only be better!
