a gay man's perspective on Operation Bikini
22 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
1. the new B&W sequences are sharp and clear 2. Bachus is repulsive as usual 3. Tab's dialog laughable: "That's what he said when we left-like 3 hours ago." 4. some location work showing a seaplane entering the water and taking off is credible. Then the Jap soldiers get rousted out of a tent and march into the jungle. 5. Showing Frankie in his berth sans shirt while dreaming was cool. 6. Some Japanese extras got some work. 7. Tab's girlie-fight was wasted in costume. 8. The blocking and dialog is so bad it makes the acting seem OK (kidding). ("Watch out for the girls") 9. Frankie is a knockout in A shirt listening to Crosby doing an impression of his dad. 10. the songs are forgettable-thank God.

10. But the cinematography is great !

"This TV" showing an excellent quality version in 2009-however....
4 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the learned commentators preceding, I have a fear that anyone who despises the wanton murder of elephants (for their Ivory) will

shout at their TV for not being warned of the realistic shooting scene early in the picture. (I have yet to see the scene with the baby). It is no wonder women have no use for this storytelling-gone-awry. Just be warned. Shaggy silver-haired, lead ball-to-the-leg-wound survivor Lee Marvin appears in the vintage of Monte Walsh but this picture lacks a theme song by Mama Cass. If it did, it would be titled "Save the last sandwich for me"

"This" is a TV network airing on secondary digital channels that runs full-length "turkeys" from the '70s and '80s and also episodes of Mr. Ed and Patty Duke -both of which feature talking horses. The picture quality is excellent if you get your rabbit-ears correctly aimed, the wind doesn't blow tree branches around and if the atmosphere is clear from you to the transmitting tower.

Dialogue Snap
20 November 2009
-after the honeymoon- Mae:"Jimmy,I've never been so happy in all my life" -Jimmy: "I've never been so tired in all my life - come on"....Mae: "it'll only take me 5 minutes to pack" Jimmy: "I'll be dead in 3". Suggestive pre-code dialog rocks, and it does this all the way in "Virtue" which I recorded direct to DVD off TCM and love, love, love. It all comes around of course, even after "sister" gets hauled off to jail for picking up men - refuses to see her newlywed husband in the hoosegow and is even slapped for her misdeeds -- all within 3 minutes ! Lots of boozing, mistreatment of women, hooking, accusation, forgiveness, re-accusation and eventual re-forgiveness with great interior and exterior photography and rumbling '30s taxicabs.

Match Point (2005)

it should be alternatively called "Fancy meeting you here"
15 May 2006
first of all I love the characters- the setting-the acting-and the locations and only quibbled with the length of the picture - until I saw it the second time and realized just how many times there are "coincidences" that detract from integrity of the story. The museum-the street corner -- spotting Chloe out the window in a rainstorm --a friend spying Chris hailing a cab and busting him on another chance meeting in a restaurant ---Nola spotting Chris exiting the store (!) It seems every time they go outside there's a fickle happenstance waiting to occur. Woody wrote the story -and directed the picture... and got a bit carried away with the Operatic arias toward the end...Nespa?

Boyer gives Mrs Melandez a whack before she croaks of poison
6 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This film has scenes that come back to me at the strangest times -- that intense scene with Mr. Muckerji telling Mrs Melandez that someone he spoke with witnesses the girl being pushed out the window by a woman who fits HER description ---is one that rolls around -- the way she keeps referring to him by name --- in a Greek accent "Mr Muckerji" -- and then when Boyer discovers her having just taken poison and gives her one last smack up the side of the head before she dies --- its a delight! "Fools -- Fools -- all my life"...etc etc -- you get the point..I have to buy this one. I love Dan Seymour's acting -- he usually plays some plump foreign sultan or police chief and appeared in Casablanca and many great pictures.

I didn't recognize Hepburn at first !
5 August 2005
Intriguing early flight scenes -especially as a woman flier challenged to set a distance record - then an altitude record. Exquisite cinematic techniques in the final scene which made up for the schmaltzy scenes scattered throughout. Fascinating scene of a man and a woman in bed together - but showing only her hand draped over the bedside clock (showing 3:20am) With the dialog unmistakeably depicting lovers..wow ! the Hayes office must have sizzled about it . Since I missed the opening sequence - I didn't yet realize it was a Hepburn movie - so it was a guessing game a few moments until that deep voice and quirky angular face resolved my question. Some trite arguments about life, love and marriage but I love Billie Burke so I handled it. Guys: please try to stay for the end- its worth it -- I cooked breakfast while it was on. Thanks TCM! Happy B-day Kate ! 8/5/05
