The Krays (1990)
A twisted tale of violence, blood and torture
It has been about 20 years since I have seen the film, I preface my comments with that for perspective of the impact this film had on me. I am almost ashamed that I saw this film, it made me feel dirty, disturbed and disgusted. The violence was incredibly real and painful. The acting was pretty good and the lack of empathy and psychopathy is well portrayed. I have seen Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco and Casino and none even compare to the shear inhuman nature of the Krays. None of those movies which I have seen more recently have impacted me the way this one did. I give it 8 out of ten because it is well done, riveting and dangerous; however, at the same time I hated it and what it did to me personally. I do not recommend watching it.
Hatred of a Minute (2002)
I am not a member of the cast or their friend or family
I thought I should qualify my position after reading other reviews. The movie is not great, but it has a lot of great elements. The lighting and scenes along with the camera work are great. The story is slow and weak, but entertaining. The acting is bad, but no worse than you will find on the SyFy Channel. The music is pretty good and the gore is good. It has the great Leather Face in the film and is produced by Bruce Campbell. I watched the complete movie and while mostly predictable, it was still enjoyable. The women are attractive enough and the lead actor does a good job of being brooding and creepy. The movie was remarkably clean for a modern film and the violence appropriate for children 13 and up. There was no sex scenes. I gave it 7 out of 10 and I think that is fair. I would watch it again if I had nothing better to do. The gay sounding angel was the most annoying aspect of the film, the devil is quite creepy.
My Name Is Bruce (2007)
Few seem to get it
I will start off by stating I am the boy in this picture, no not the actor, the fan, okay maybe not that bad, but a huge fan of Bruce Campbell. This movie was extremely enjoyable to me and to most fans who have seen everything he has done in his long storied career. Therefore, without question, I am biased. My household is not biased and do not like him except on Burn Notice (possibly the finest show ever) and they loved it as well. This movie is an introspective into the life of an amazing entertainer. It shows how insane fans can be and how dangerous it can be to be a Bruce Campbell. It pokes a ton of fun at his B-Rate movies and the perceptions people have about Bruce Campbell the man. In all it is a great film because it tells a story about a real hero to many who is perceived as a dud or bad actor. He is far from a bad actor, but among the greatest of this generation and it shows in this campy film. The basic plot is a day in the life of Bruce Campbell and how much it sucks to be him (obviously, this is acting and not based on the reality of his existence). The movie starts off campy with the opening song, then goes to him acting in a B-Rate sequel with foreign actors. He gets kidnapped by a lifelong fan to really save a town. He tells the town people that he will be missed on the set of his current movie and that they will be looking for him, to which they turn to the movie in the process of production and show them using a dummy of Campbell and moving along. This is the type of avant-garde stuff that is throughout the film and the type of humor that fans of Campbell will enjoy. I strongly recommend that if you want to see this movie (and you should because it is great) get together with a group of Bruce Campbell fans and watch it. Before watching it, it would be a good idea to do a marathon of his body of work. To find his work, I recommend checking the library next to the literary classics like Shakespeare. I do not want to ruin it for anyone else by giving more of the movie content, just go and see it and enjoy, I know I did and if you have a sense of humor, you will too!
The Errand of Angels (2008)
A very good effort, near flawless
This movie was extremely impressive to me, it brought back to me many of the treasured feelings of serving a mission and the many trials and tribulations often faced with that calling. The writers take you on a glimpse of what a mission is from beginning to end. Really the only flaw in this film, is the title track played in the middle of the film. The sister missionaries remind me of many of the sisters I served with and have known. The people seemed very genuine from my experiences and the appointments were very viable. If you have never served a mission, but wanted a first hand look at what a mission is truly like, this is what you need to see. It is among the most frustrating work you will ever do, but it is most likely the most rewarding time of your life. At first I was leery about this film and was questioning seeing it, but I am glad I did. My only criticism is one the title track, two the slowness of some scenes and three, there was no three, that good. I would recommend this film to anybody, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or not. Enjoy!
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (2008)
Amazing Proof of Concept
This movie has furnished amazing proof of concept. What might that be? That Darwinist's, Evolutionist's and most correctly Atheists are afraid of Creationism and Intelligent design. Did the movie do a good job exposing the fears and vitriolic hatred of those who claim to be intellectually superior, pure scientists and above the ignorance of belief in the supernatural and divine? Well, look for yourself, look at the outrage, look at the comments here, look at the blogs of the duped super geniuses, look at all this and forget about the movie itself and bingo, you have a winner. Now add an entertaining documentary with witty commentary, and super intelligent scientist being stumped and my goodness, could it be? Yes, you have seen the greatest, largest piece of wool pulled over the eyes of the supposed super intelligent professors of society. The debate is closed as far as their concerned, because it was never opened, just like their minds. It is amazing how closed minded the supposed enlightened ones are and how easily they fell into Mr. Stein's trap. Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!
September Dawn (2007)
September Dawn, Lies, Decipt and Lack of Respect
This film which does have beautiful landscapes, good to great actors, and is loosely based on real events. Every person who is familiar with the events that took place and even those who are not will realize that this movie is total tripe. It is a poor piece of fiction with lousy acting, creative writing and tons of historical inaccuracies. Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel stated the following about the film, "You don't have to be a Mormon, Mormon sympathizer or adhere to any religious creed to realize, sitting through this, that you're in the presence of evil. A movie about an infamous Mormon massacre that is old-fashioned hate-mongering at its worst. Badly acted, too." I concur with his conclusion. This film is among the worst propaganda films ever written and worst of all is the events that took place are so old that only historians, Mormons, those who hate Mormons and the families of those killed even care about the events. Should films, books and histories be written about the dreadful mountain meadow massacre? Yes, of course, but they need to seek to be historically accurate, take into account the full history that lead to the events and realize that history is something sacred and not something to be created. As for September Dawn, the movie was a dreadfully inaccurate portrayal of a tragic time and sad period in Mormon, US and Utah history. Are their still questions that we would like answers too? Yes, will they come, probably not judging by the years passed over. This film is a real stinker and it is unfortunate with such a great cast of actors.
Second Effort (1968)
A great sales film
I saw this film in a recent sales training and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe it was because of the one on one with Vince Lombardi, or that I am a salesman myself, but never the less it was very motivational and worth watching. Ron in the film is a good actor as well though early in his career. This film should be watched by anybody who would like to be successful in sales because of the principles it teaches. In the film Lombardi is being sold to by Ron. Ron is nervous and sweating bullets. You don't see Lombardi originally you only hear his voice. Ron then gets a training he and I will never forget. He is told about the Lombardi principles and the way success in any field takes true dedication and determination. He explains that you need to believe in what you are doing and then you need to live it. It is truly inspirational and uplifting!
Taken (2002)
Taken: 2 hours of my life
I thank God that unlike many here I only caught the last episode. This is total garbage. It is like every cliché abduction movie rolled into one. The big bad government military complex, the whacked out alien abducties, the mad scientists, the chosen one, etc... I feel literally sick that part of my life is gone and I can never have it back. The acting is over-the-top bad, the story is O.T.T. sappy. I wish the aliens would come and erase this horror from my memory. My favorite part is where she removes the tracking devices from their heads with a telekinesis lobotomy. And the dumbfounded looks on the faces of those who were just lobotomized. Classic. Where is MST3K when you need it! This movie was like electro-shock therapy only more painful.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Nasty Patty/Idiot Box (2002)
The Idiot Box is the best of Spongebob
Though the Nasty Patty is a great episode the best Spongebob episode is by far the Idiot Box. In this incredibly intelligent and thoughtful episode we see writing that can only be compared to that of the greats like Shakespeare, Virgil, Dante, Dostoyevsky and Homer. In this episode we see the finest acting and directing too. Bill Faberbakke is comparable to Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecture or De Niro in Cab driver. This edgy performance and dramatic voicing draws you in like a fish is drawn to water. When he is under the attack of the Avalanche you feel as you are there and if you close your eyes you can feel your legs go numb. And Tom Kenny makes you feel the pain of his lost limbs. Of course the strong performance of Spongebob's foil Squidward Tentacles by Roger Bumpass is only describable as phenomenal. Truly this is the closest we have come to a legendary classic and gripping thriller since, dare I say Citizen Kane. I do not want to reveal anymore as to destroy the marvelous experience you are bound to have when you see this unparalleled masterpiece. Bravo, Bravo, Bravissimo!
Murder in the First (1995)
A Great Movie About Life in the Joint
I found this movie appalling and that is what made it so great. The prison was a dump, this mans life had been taken by the system and he is scarred, sad and destroyed. No matter what your views of the legal system, this film made you hate prison and the destruction of the soul of those who are caught within it. It shows a man deprived of every form of decency and respect; a truly sad and pathetic character who you hate and love at the same time. Death is a gift to this sad man played by Kevin Bacon. In all The cast is terrific, the scenes are intense and the movie is a total winner. I agree with others who have stated how can this have not been an Oscar contender. Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater are perfectly matched in this film. You believe Kevin's Character Henri Young when he says to Christian Slaters Character James Stamphill: "Your my best friend Jimmy. It is tragic ,yes; it is depressing, yes; It is gross, yes; It is a great film without a doubt. I give it 9.5 out of 10 but don't see the half star. Go see this film if you want to see great acting. PS.. Gary Oldmans character is also very very good. A must see if only once!
The Testaments: Of One Fold and One Shepherd (2000)
I think this movie is better if you are "Not" LDS or read the BofM
This is a moving and touching film, but strays majorly from the text it represents. Many of the characters are fictional and the events embellished. With that said, the movie is well acted other than some over acting by the father and villain and sappy acting from many characters. The sets are very good and the scenes with Christ are very moving and spiritual. The musical score is also very good. I have seen it twice at the Old Town Visitor's Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I did enjoy the film and do not want to give the impression that it is bad because it is not. It is a good film. I recommend it to anyone as long as you go with the understanding that this is a liberal interpretation of the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. If you haven't read the book I believe this will be more enjoyable than if you have. If you have read the book just remember this fiction based on fact.
The Rundown (2003)
Highly entertaining comedy/action film
I don't know what the other review I saw's beef was with this film. I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable. It had probably one of the best crash scenes ever and some great fight scenes as well. The chemistry between The Rock and Sean Scott was very good and Christopher Walkin was everything you would expect him to be. I have watched the film 4-5 times and enjoy it every time I see it. I think it is a great film for just sitting back and laughing. In the film The Rock plays a bounty hunter for lack of a better word for a bookie. He starts out hunting down this football player and has to take on the massive O'Line of this star player. I found this fight scene particularly enjoyable, though the best fight scene takes place in the jungle. It is unbelievable how intense it is. Guys are flying from everywhere out of the trees. You got to see this movie if you like fun!
Treasure Island (1972)
I loved this dark version of Treasure Island
I find this to be the definitive version of Treasure Island. I thought that Orson Wells's performance was exactly what it needed to be as a pirate. He was evil, but charming, violent but kind, he was as two sided as a coin. In my mind that is what a pirate is romantically. I saw this film first when I was 10 years old approximately and loved it then. I saw it again in the 1990's and fell in love with it again. With all the bad, weird and annoying versions of this classic novel like treasure planet (lame!) It is nice to have a standard to base them upon in cinematic form. This is it. Not Orson Wells greatest film by far but an enjoyable treat yes!
Shichinin no samurai (1954)
Just Plain Boring
I am a huge fan of martial arts films and shows but, these have to be the most boring things I have ever seen. They take forever, the fight scenes are weak and it is not funny despite the lip sinks being off. I loved Kung Fu the series and movies and even liked the second version. I love Bruce Lee films and Steven Segal films as well but cannot fathom why these films are so popular. Give me Jackie Chan any day over this dribble. Why isn't Enter The Dragon up above these artsy pieces of garbage. Why not Pokeman for that instance at least there is some humor in that. I would rather watch Dragon Ball Z, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, The Fist of the North Star both versions, Blood Sport even Ultimate Fighting Championship six over this set of movies. I hated Karate Kid and feel that it is an insult to the martial arts but it still is better than this movie set. Have I made my point yet? I hope you never subject yourself to this dribble. Sincerely, Ceasarmoridon.
