How It Ends (2018)
5/10
Decent... until the end.
26 April 2019
The film itself is interesting. A good cast, a great deal of intrigue as to what the event is. I had worried it might get boring with such a minimal cast but it was actually really engaging and it helped to become invested in their story.

There are some major errors, or goofs, and some annoying plot holes for people like me who like a good conclusion to a story (they start in one location but there is never an update to their status for example) and that can be frustrating at multiple points in this film.

Obviously, I don't want to spoil the film for people who do want to watch it but it feels as though they got bored towards the end... so they just ended it. I had to google what the outcome was (I was wrong) and I really hate that. For a film called "How It Ends" it wasn't exactly a clean cut ending!!

Good fun

Think the reviews are unfair - it's a well made film, it's different and the cast are great.

No, it's not perfect. It's the not the best film ever made - but it is a good film, it's not the same story line that's been churned out a million and one times. Its definitely worth a watch, and the cast is great.

I love the multiple genres included in the film, it created a real life feel to it. Adam Scott is a great lead with a great cast around him. This is a great film to just chill out and watch without to much thinking that be enjoyed by all.

Pixar is for kids. My kid loved it.
28 November 2015
So, I've read a few reviews from grown ups saying how disappointed they were with this film but no mention of their children. So, here it goes:

My son is 5 years old. He is completely obsessed with Dinosaurs of any description so there was no question that would have to see this film. We went to the cinema to see it today. He adored it, he sat perfectly sit throughout, oohed and aaahed and giggled his way through it.

Yes, the story has similarities to other Pixar stories out there. But it's a lovely little story, there's plenty of action in a child friendly manner, plenty of genuine laugh out loud X moments and even the occasional scene where adults need to pretend that their not welling up or even full blown crying.

As an adult viewer,, no it's not the most original story out there, but the story is told well, the visuals are truly beautiful and the relationships formed in the film are Disney classic style.

For the first time ever, my son asked if we could return the next day to watch it again which he's never done before. I really enjoyed this film too . It's by far the best kids film that has been released this year (Minions was god awful and we never bothered with Inside Out).

Not as good as the hype
26 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So, the typical comparisons to Daredevil have begun. This show is completely different to Daredevil, and nowhere near as good. The female heroine is great, but her powers are underused. The actress portraying her is great though, even if she needs to work on her fight scenes. Kilgrave - supposed to be one of the greatest villains in the Marvel world. In this he comes across as spoilt brat. David Tennant is a great actor and he did a great job, but the character was very whiny and generally just a bit lame. Overall, the series was a bit of a disappointment. There was a lack of Luke Cage who could have been amazing had he been shown more. I'll give season two a go, but I can't see me watching this again anytime soon.

Eden Lake (2008)
7/10
Different!
27 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I used to love horror films but went off them rather quickly. I decided to watch Eden Lake purely because I am a massive fan of Michael Fassbender and was intrigued to see his take on the horror genre.

At the beginning, I wasn't overly impressed. It started incredibly slowly and I thought it would be a chavs vs couple chase.

How wrong I was. The capture and attack of Steve was shocking, engaging and utterly barbaric. The realism is what set it apart from other horrors. Also, how the gang change from being petulant nuisances to being downright sadistic and cruel is incredibly alarming.

The gore is few and far between but when it appears it really is grim, even with some of the inflicted pain not being shown on screen you still get a real feel of how gruesome and painful it really is.

The young cast are brilliant and really convincing - and a film with a young cast usually heightens my doubt that it'll be a good film. The biggest acting weakness for me came from the lead actress who played Jenny. Good for the most part, but utterly flat and dull when trying to convey her love for Steve.

If you love horrors, I'd definitely give this a go but don't expect fireworks.

Man of Steel (2013)
9/10
I'm not a comic book nerd...
29 July 2015
... But I've watched plenty of animated series and other Superman movies. Man Of Steel is one of my favourites.

The first 45 minutes are incredible. The origin story of how Kal El came to Earth is done both shortly, detailed and accurately. You really feel for the sacrifice his parents make and see how utterly alone in the world Kal El really will be. This theme continues with confusion of who is his and his journey to discovering his true identity shown between grown man Clark and flashbacks to incidents in his childhood.

Then the critics started whinging. It lost the story... Stupid love stories.... Too much action...

Rubbish. Two men from a different planet with ridiculous strength are fighting for what they believe in and what they want - and Superman is fighting the only person he has ever encountered from his planet. Hits you right in the feels if you have a heart. And the controversial ending... Well, I won't spoil it but do your research on Superman and you'll realise you're whinging for the wrong reasons.

And Henry Cavill is a fabulous Superman - swiftly planted 2nd in the list after Reeves.

Great film. Bring on Batman Vs Superman!!

I realised my mistake after 10 minutes
29 July 2015
Let's start with the obvious comparison - Twister. One of the best disaster films to ever grace a movie screen. Original, great cast, great acting, thrilling etc. Then Into The Storm happened.

They've clearly stolen many elements from Twister, and added some other ludicrous bits to make this an utter waste of your time. The visual effects of the tornadoes are amazing - and that's the only positive.

The acting is abysmal (even Richard Armitage), the storyline is daft and also incredibly predictable. Similar to a horror film, you can tell who won't make it to the end from the get go and who'll hook up with up. Yawn.

The worst part for me was the whole the characters filming the events and the setting the scene/story at the beginning. It was badly written and cringey to watch in places.

If you do decide to watch the film I suggest you play a game - have a drink for every goof, factual error and cheesy moment and you'll be blind drunk after 30 minutes.

An alright film for a rainy day
24 June 2015
So this is obviously never going to compare to the original Jurassic Park, and I don't think anything ever will. The story is a little predictable and far fetched, if not utterly ridiculous in places. And the effects are nowhere near as good as the first two films. One bonus is there is more sunlight in this film than the second so some of the action can actually be seen! But at the end of the day it's not THAT bad as some of the other reviews may claim, and is still quite fun and jumpy in places (though maybe less screaming by the woman would have been nice!) The film did have great parts to it that maybe could have been used in the first and second to give us a longer feature for those instead (and stay away from mainland cities too!) Overall, it's got dinosaurs. It's a bit of fun, and it'll pass the time on a rainy day. It's also a good starting point for kids and dino films as it's the mildest of them all.

If you love Dinos, you'll love this
24 June 2015
First - don't even bother comparing this to Jurassic Park or any of the original trilogy. There is no point, this is a different movie entirely. Chris Pratt is brilliant in this film as the hero with some brilliant support from Bryce and the kids. Yes, the story is a bit weak. Yes, it's a bit cliché. Yes, it's cheesy. But it's also good fun! Plenty of adrenaline, the dinosaurs are brilliant and the effects are spot on as usual. There are plenty of heart stopping moments but some comic moments too for a bit of relief. I've always loved dinosaur movies and this is no exception. Don't watch it trying to compare it, just go along for the ride and enjoy it!

The Killing (2011–2014)
8/10
Definitely worth a watch
24 June 2015
Out of boredom and feeling uninspired I scouted Netflix for something to watch. I stumbled across The Killing. Seasons one and two are based around the Rosie Larson case. Both seasons were brilliant and had me guessing right until the very end. All of the actors involved were incredible and the last 15 minutes of the season finale were completely haunting. Season three did dip a little bit but it was still engaging but not as clever as the first two seasons. Season 4 was a bit disappointing. It took the characters to a place a never envisioned and it didn't sit quite right. The case was also a little off but it was good that the season was wrapped up instead of just being cancelled and forgotten about. I'm glad I watched it all but it could've ended after 2 seasons.

Very poor!
27 May 2015
Despite being an adult nearing 30, I am still very partial to kids animated films and 90% of the time I thoroughly enjoy them. This film, however, was incredibly poor. The storyline and script but appalling and it felt really dragged out. It was also incredibly predictable. I was surprised by the lack of humour too. Obviously, this is aimed at children, my son, who is 4, watched it quietly. He is a dinosaur fanatic. He only seemed truly captivated towards the end when there was a little more action involving the dinosaurs but it certainly didn't get the rave reviews that other films like How To Train Your Dragon or even Disney's Dinosaur received. A rainy day DVD film at best - and that's if you're desperate.

Awful on many levels
30 October 2014
I bought this on a whim from a local shop as my 4 year old son loves dinosaurs. The storyline in his film is abysmal and the acting is even worse. It's not remotely enjoyable, it feels like a chore. I'm aware this film is aimed at children, but there are plenty of kids films out there that can be enjoyed by adults too. This isn't one of them, and even my son gets bored during this film. The special effects are terrible too - the dinosaurs look more like brightly coloured fluffy chickens than anything else. I can only assume this film was a straight to did release as it's become very clear as to why I hadn't heard of it before!
