Euphoria: Shook Ones Pt II (2019)
Best episode of season 1
Everything about this episode is perfection, the cinematography, acting, tension and pacing. Having all the characters in the same place at the same time allowed the camera to float so effortlessly between characters and storylines. It was just beautiful to watch.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Why aren't more people talking about this show?
I admit I wasn't a huge fan of the first two seasons but I did really enjoy it. At the time I was a lot more invested in the show Vikings, so I lost interest in the last kingdom and didn't go back to it until about three years later. By that point the final season was about to be released so I just binged it. And I have to say I loved it!
Compared to Vikings this interpretation feels more real and historically accurate, and overall a lot more consistent. Vikings fell apart as a show after the fourth season, whereas the last kingdom didn't have a single terrible episode and they made a good decision to end it where they did so that the story wasn't dragged out. It was satisfying. While the action wasn't always as sleek as Vikings, I think it made the show look more authentic to how fighting really would have been at that time.
The last kingdom really took me on a journey and wrapped up perfectly. I will always think fondly of this series unlike so many shows that started off as big favourites and flopped after a few seasons too many.
Shadow and Bone: No Mourners (2021)
Good but could have been better
At times it didn't feel like a finale episode but it was still a lot of fun, just didn't feel as epic as I wanted it to be.
Not enough action, and the fight scenes that were shown weren't very impressive. It was just a bit of fist fighting and an underwhelming use of magical powers. The two best fight scenes were, 1. The one in the forest in the second episode, when the darkling uses the cut to chop the man in half and 2. In episode 4 when Mal fights in the snowy forest. Oh and I did enjoy a few scenes in episode 7 with Alina and the darkling using their powers, both in the flashbacks and the killing of the stag. Other than those few I find the action lacking something. Probably the gore and violence, but I understand it is a YA show.
Sometimes I felt that the crows got in and out of places a little too easily without much trouble, wouldn't other guards recognise their own in a palace straight away? It was a bit unbelievable at times. Kaz didn't really do anything this whole episode except stab a volcra so that was disappointing, and Jesper literally only made like 3 shots.
I really liked the last shot in this episode though and Ben Barnes as the Darkling is perfection. Honestly, he is the one who carries this show.
Other actors I will commemorate are: Archie Renaux as Mal and Kit Young as Jesper.
The others were just ok.
Band of Brothers (2001)
The best series ever made.
Not only the best of its genre but possibly one of the best things ever made in cinematic history.
Bridgerton (2020)
Brainless entertainment
It's pretty to look at. That's about it.
No but seriously, it's not terrible. It's just not the sort of thing to take too seriously. It's a bit of fun, the gossip girl of period dramas.
And I'm definitely going to watch season 2.
Outer Banks (2020)
Actually pretty good
I liked this a lot more than I expected to. I loved the fun dynamic between the characters. The plot itself was ok and a little predictable but I still found it very entertaining, and they laid out good groundwork's for a second season. The acting was pretty decent too, for a teen show.
My favourite character has to be JJ. He's violent, impulsive and irresponsible, but he's also incredibly loyal and funny. He's the character with the most layers. He always has the best lines and I think he's the best actor out of the lot as well. Definitely the most charismatic. I'd watch this show just for him. John B is probably the second best and the others are a bit meh. I found myself getting a little bored with John B and Sarah's relationship. JJ deserves to have that special someone, he's the one getting abused by his dad. There are so many times when JJ or Pope are getting beaten up or are in trouble and John B is out having fun with Sarah, yet JJ and Pope are always there for John B. That kind of annoyed me at times.
Before I go off on a tangent about each character, I will say that this is a very underrated show and I highly recommend to anyone who just wants something fun and entertaining.
Spinning Out (2020)
It's not bad
It's ok. I managed to get through the whole thing without cringing too much. How the Winx saga got renewed for a second season and this didn't is a bit confusing, but I guess Spinning Out just didn't attract enough of an audience. I suppose people want teen fluff and not something trying to deal with darker topics surrounding mental health.
It was a lot darker than I expected and they handled the mental illness topic fairly well, although I am not an expert on bi-polar disorder so can not say for certain if they did an accurate depiction of someone with it. The acting was ok, not great but bearable. The skating choreography didn't look very good and that's coming from someone who has no knowledge on the sport. It just looked a little clunky, but it didn't bother me too much.
Characters could be extremely annoying at times but overall I did enjoy it.
War & Peace (2016)
Stunning
I don't care if they deviated from the books, this is a beautifully made series.
Shadow and Bone: Show Me Who You Are (2021)
A step up
So much better than the first two. Now we are getting somewhere.
The Witcher (2019)
Much better than I expected
The plot is a little all over the place and it can get confusing at times but it's a well made and entertaining fantasy show. Henry Cavill does a great job as Geralt. The fight scene choreography is some of the best I've seen, particularly the one in the first episode.
My only gripe with the show is that the CGI of some of the creatures is really bad, especially the dragon and the fawn things. Also the dialogue was a little clunky in parts but not enough to ruin scenes. I expect they'll get a bigger budget for season two and improve on a few of these issues.
Not on the same level as GOT but it's still pretty damn good.
Dark (2017)
The best Netflix show
I honestly wasn't expecting Dark to be this good. Everything about it is perfect, the acting, casting, cinematography, music, and the plot is insanely good and clever. Sometimes I felt like I needed an IQ of 180 to figure out what was going on but I got there in the end. It could be slow so you have to be patient, this is not quick entertainment. It's thought provoking and takes time to get into.
Why do I not see people talking about this show? It's so underrated.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Inconsistent but still entertaining
I've only seen 4 episodes so I may change my rating. I had high hopes as someone who has read the books, but I am a little disappointed. The acting is sometimes dry and you can tell they're reading from a script, Ben Barnes is slightly better than the rest. Freddy Carter as Kaz makes me cringe, his acting is so off. I don't see all the fuss about Jessie Mei li as Alina, she was just boring. Amita Suman as Inej wasn't bad but didn't stand out massively. It was all just a bit awkward, and didn't feel natural at all. Which is interesting considering the author of the books worked closely on the show as well as writer of the film Arrival. I assumed that even if the rest was bad that at least the script would be good. It's not. It's just dull.
I knew the pacing would be an issue, and I was right. It's very rushed at the start and gets slightly better as it goes along but still not great. I will say though that the show looks good, great atmosphere and costumes. The music is good but sometimes seems a bit too dramatic for TV, and felt like it didn't always match up with a scene. CGI is good but I haven't seen loads of it yet.
Everyone was saying this was better than The Witcher, and I hate to compare as they are totally different but they are both fantasy shows made my Netflix. They have some similarities such as as lot of jumping around and mediocre scripts. However, I do think that the Witcher is better. Maybe that's because it's more grown up but I'm only 22 so I would have thought I would still enjoy YA storylines. It's a weird one because it's not as good as the Witcher and not even in the vicinity of GOT, but, it is miles better than the Winx Saga on Netflix. I think it's binge worthy and actually quite enjoyable despite my criticisms.
I think young people will love it.
Update after finishing:
episode 5 onwards is when it starts to get good. I think the actors started to grow into their roles a little more and the pacing got a lot better. Ben Barnes as the darkling is perfection. Kaz also grew on me a bit, as did Inej. Wasn't a huge fan of the Nina and Matthias storyline but I understand it was just setting up for future seasons so they did what they could. The action scenes were good but I wish there was more. I was hoping for some small battles but I suppose it's not that kind of fantasy show, it's more about the characters. It's still not perfect, the script lacks something, and the show as a whole has inconsistencies. But I really enjoyed those last few episodes and am excited for season 2.
