The Boys (2019)
Writing in Season 3 is sloppy
A lot of incohesive plots seem to be disconnected with prior seasons in the 3rd season.
Kimiko has been tagged along with the boys for so long and when she's in Russia, suddenly she didn't want to be "Butcher's gun"? Everyone, including us the audience, knows she's only good for killing, but only does she not know that.
Frenchie's rebellious attitude against Butcher was forced. After the Nina kidnap incident which supposedly indicated that he has issues being reined, he came back and sided with M&M instantly with the comment " Butcher screwed us". How so?
M&M was supposed to be the most level-headed character but totally lost his cool and wanted to go against soldier boy. He's not a supe, has no power and on top of that he had to take it out on Butcher who obviously just used soldier boy. He just couldn't wait a little moment longer. Even Kimiko is not that dumb. The worse part he's riding on his high horse the entire season.
Starlight is another annoying princess who's always talking and talking but changes nothing. Really don't appreciate her trying to twist Hughie's intention of protecting her into Hughier's doing the V24 for selfish reasons.
Butcher's lashing out at Ryan is just convenient plot to push him towards Homelander.
Hughie and Maeve are the only two characters in season 3 that are consistent and make sense.
Both A-train and Deep's storylines are boring. A-train is way past redeeming line like Homelander. Deep is an un-funny comic relief. I guess he's kept for his pretty face.
Last but not least, this show seems voices against racism, but the only two Asian supes are either blind/deaf(Blindspot) or mute(Kimiko). How ironic.
Sex/Life (2021)
It's too real
I like the show because it touches some deep issues instead of just showing some shallow basic scenarios of affairs happening and then fighting, crying, and let's get a divorce. The show is so much more than that.
It depicts the struggles people have in a marriage. Billie's struggles are about sex life and the feelings of being deprived of freedom and expression a side of herself. Her husband's are doubting himself if he's enough for Billie after he found out Billie fancies her old flame.
It also presses an issue on choices. "You choose this so you can't have the other." "You have to.sacrifice this in order to get that." That's what we're taught by the elders or learn from our life experiences. No one can have it all or you'll be judged by people, and there will be consequences waiting if you dare to challenge and act "irresponsibly".
And there're the regrets that make you want to return to the past, so you could have a do-over. But that's not how life works, does it? Some people that were missed are missed forever. Either moving forward or getting stuck in the past...or is there's a third option?
The acting, sex scenes, sound tracks definitely make the show enjoyable and I really like the sense of humor the character Sasha bring into the show.
Outlander (2014)
Oh My
The chemistry between Jamie and Claire is phenomenal. I enjoy every moment of their scenes together. Whenever they're together, whether they are happy or sad, the deep affection oozes naturally through their words and actions and I feel all these emotions with them. It's rare for me that I have to remind myself it's just fictional and don't get too emotionally attached to the characters. The show pulls you in the world it creates, overwhelm you with the raw beauty and ugliness, happiness and sorrow. Not saying the show is totally perfect considering there're some plots and characters I don't like(Brianna in season 4), as long as Jamie and Claire's legend doesn't cease, the flaws are inconsequential.
Charmed (2018)
The imdb rating doesn't do the show justice
, so I give it a 10 although I think the show should get a proper rating around 7 to 8. First of all, I have to point out the writing is very good. It's well-thought out and full of twists. You can almost feel the tons of efforts the writers put on the scripts to prove this remake can be as good as the original if not better. As to the acting, our leading actresses did show lack of experience in the beginning and therefore, the chemistry sort of wasn't there, but as the show has progressed, it gets better and becomes believable.
I personally regard this show as a new show because it only shares some basic settings with the original and overall it's different, fresh and entertaining. I'm glad it gets more than 1 season and I suggest the new viewers who like the magic, witch, fantasy stuff judge the show yourself regardless what others have to say.
Burn (2019)
Surprisingly good for a low budget movie
Our protagonist Melinda here represents a nice, polite, awkward, average looking girl whom people tend to ignore and take advantage of. Deep down, she's extremely unsatisfied. One night, when she's working at a gas station like she normally does, a robbery took place. Given that she's sick of feeling desperation, she's trying to use this incident as her way out.
This movie doesn't copy any chiche scenarios, nor does it bore the viewers. The writer does an excellent job in terms of story telling and psychological interpretation. I highly recommend this movie.
The Widow (2019)
Nicely done
The script is well-written. The pace is decent; the tension is consistent. Everything is perfectly connected and completes a full picture at the end. Although I don't know how much the story can reflect on the reality in Congo, I appreciate these scenarios having impacts on the characters' lives are realistic, so they're propelled to do certain things. Secrets behind secrets, lies on top of lies, as we discover the truth with the leading character Georgia, we also witness some of the human nature. After watching the show, the philosophical question here for me is: Can we ascend from what life has thrown at us or Are we allowed to go with the flow?
Instant Family (2018)
This is a comedy? Puleeze
I didn't smile once while I was watching this movie. Maybe if the movie changes its genre to solely drama, I'll give it a higher score. Not only it's not funny but also quite infuriating. The other foster parents are rude and the three kids they're trying to foster/adopt are unbearably annoying. I especially don't like the ideas that the foster kids are entitled to be bratty and ungrateful because of what they've been through and the only way to show your love is to spoil them. Parenting takes a lot more than that. Years ago I watched a gay movie of a similar fostering storyline called "get your stuff" and it was much better than this one. This movie will give you all the reasons not having children or being foster parents.
Titans (2018)
Depressing
To sum it up, this show so far (season 1) can be described by one word: dark.
The story is dark. Every character has a sob story, and is struggling with the darkness inside them. The only character who doesn't have the struggle is Cory who is clueless about who she is and what she's here for.
The scenes are also very dark, which really bother me. The filters are heavily used, which create the gloomy atmosphere well until you start to feel the melancholy is all the show gives and it's depressing.
That's said, the show suffers from being overly serious, and the dialogues are dreadful because of its imbalance. No humor, no actual warmth is between the characters interactions, considering the show spending so much time on pep talks, background stories, it's a missed opportunity. As an audience, it's hard to relate to those characters and what they've been through, The show gets a lot of attention because it originates from some of the big names in DC universe; however, the show alone is not as entertaining as it's supposed to be.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Wonderful
How the cameras capture the scenery highlights the beauty of Europe outdoors and indoors, which mingles with the different kind of plots and music that offers an enjoyable viewing atmosphere. With the romance, magic, and different species, the audience are drawn into a world of wonder. Watching an exquisite show like this is similar to taste of glass of fine wine; it's so captivating that you want to taste its whole at once but at the same time, you also want to taste its sophistication bit by bit.
Little Italy (2018)
It's just okay
I know when I visit here, I would see the key word "cliche" in the reviews. It's true; the story structure and the plot is not very creative. This movie is romance comedy but it's not very successful on both parts. I don't really believe the chemistry between Hayden and Emma neither do I feel the movie is hilarious. The funniest part is probably the 3 minutes of bloopers at the end of the movie.
But, I would say the movie is watchable. You won't see any trying-too-hard funny stuff which comes across cringy. The movie is bland, daily and approachable, which is designed for people who just want to relax and kill time.
Diane (2017)
Only can get through half of the movie
The movie starts with the mystery of a dead girl's body lying in the backyard of a veteran's house. And then, the veteran is harassed by two punks in the neighborhood and investigated/stalked by two detectives. The punks and the detectives are idiots who obviously don't know the concept of "innocent until proven guilty". Especially, the way the detectives talk to the suspect(the veteran) really rubs me the wrong way. It's like they already make the assumptions and talk to the suspect provocatively with nasty attitude. At that point, I couldn't care the mystery or the movie anymore.
The 100 (2014)
The ideology is worrying
As an audience, one has to review a show by its overall storyline, the plots, the actors' acting skills, the development of characters, the consistency and so on. Considering the issues mentioned above are well covered, I'll focus on what's relatively more important and yet rarely being written: what message a show conveys to its audience; what is the moral of the story and what the said message could affect its audience.
That being said, I have to review the show with a serious approach. This show begins with the conflict between the sky crew and the grounders due to the territory scrambling. Then, as the show progresses, more groups are involved and therefore, it creates more drama. Drama is essential for tv shows, but the problem is how the drama is initiated and how it plays out. This is where I have to take the writers to task for the bad writing.
The scenarios often start off "shoot first" nonsense. Whenever you see strangers, kill first without confirming their intentions. Far-fetched scenarios over and over again, which challenges viewers intelligence and common sense. It's absurd when you think about in an apocalytic world where there're not many people left, people would tend to seek out their kind and rely on each other more.
There's not much basic human interactions between people of different groups, let alone diplomacy. Endless circles of violence which lead to seemingly unavoidable bloodshed is actual product of lack of communication. The show runners try their hardest to make everything morally blur by creating sticky situations to confuse audience about what's right and what's wrong. This problem manifests when it comes to certain points where certain characters don't have to face justice after killing a person or a group of people.
So, in general, in order to make the characters' (usually the main characters) killing excusable, the characters always kill in the name of survival. It has to be "either us or them" situations. The logic works like a charm in most of the scenarios until the innocent people are also killed as collateral damage. This shows goes too far that even the main characters are morally bankrupt. And it gets worse, in season 3, one of the main character massacred 300 grounders without facing consequences. This mindset behind the writing is horrying; as long as the characters struggle a bit between right and wrong and it's okay to do the wrong; as long as the characters shows signs of remorse, then thou should be forgiven. Justice doesn't work like that in any reality as far as I'm concerned. It becomes more and more clear the show doesn't take human lives seriously. The only lives that matter are the main characters.
Because the main characters are members of Sky Crew, the grounders (or any other group of people) as a whole are vilified as lesser human beings who don't deserve to live. It's a very dangerous undertone message of the show subconsciously affecting its audience. The belief of inequality among human beings and the supremacy of a group of people is the root of evil. The value system of the show is fundamentally wrong. The show runners fail to deal with sensitive issues with discreetness, hence this show is unwatchable.
Scorpion (2014)
It's an enjoyable show if you watch it with the right expectation and mindset
It's pretty obvious the major complaint about the show is the accuracy of science. Indeed, the show is dealing with a lot of physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, biology, medicine and so on. I don't believe any viewer can master all of these subjects and pinpoint evey scientific error that's displayed. I myself can only spot a few errors with scenarios related to biology and chemistry because of my background, but does it ruin the show for me? Absolutely not.
I seriously don't know what's the point to watch a show based on adventure and excitement and then criticize it's "silly", "unrealistic", and "stupid"? If you want to be educated by accurate science, watch Discovery or attend classes at colleges.
Saying that the scientific errors make the show unwatchable is silly itself, because if everything has to 100% accurate, there would be no show to begin with... and most likely is a snoozefest for many.
The being said, even though the show may not always be scientifically correct, the show is quite inspiring and educational. Once you notice something may be wrong in the episode, you can try to find answers for yourself, if you're interested. If some theories appear on the show that haven't been generally proven by science, it could be insipiring to those who want to look deeper. To study science actually requires the abiliby of imagination, and so does watching this show.
Sometimes, you would wonder how could a genius make a mistake like that? But when you think about it, it could also make sense because geniuses are also humans. Also, when it comes to real problems solving situations, things can't always go as planed, which gives the show more sense of 'realness'.
The best part of the show is its humor. The only thing that bothers me is the dramas are kind of forced just for triggering something to happen.
Otherwises, I could give the show a score of 10. It's an overall enjoyable show, nonetheless.
