U.F.O. (2012)
Terrible
It began in a promising way, liked the idea and the unusual setting. However there wasn't a lot of acting talent in there. Poor character development and ending. It could have been so much better.
JCVD unconvincing and wooden.
A few predictable fight scenes.
I know what they were trying to do by having Martha Reeves's 'Nowhere to run' in the soundtrack but it made a joke of what was supposed to be a tense scene.
100 minutes of my life I won't get back.
3/10 is generous.
Divergent (2014)
Despite the poor reviews I quite enjoyed it
Plot development was a little slow to begin with and characters developed predictably. Some reviewers remarked it was a similar film to Hunger Games, as I have not seen that film I cannot comment on the plot line. Possibly it is because the central characters are young and attractive. Possibly some other reason.
However, if you suspend disbelief and run with the story it turns into a pretty entertaining one. Girl moves out from a loving home into the dangerous world, changes, finds love, overcomes her fears and faces the future with a new perspective.
Too many reviewers focus on things not explained in the film; why are the faction-less marginalised when the city is run by selfless rulers?, what is the specific threat outside the walls?, why couldn't the intelligence faction foresee that there might be a threat to the order emanating from themselves?, etc. This doesn't matter. Take the story on it's own merits and judge accordingly. Yes they could have gone in many directions with the plot but the central theme of one faction trying to overthrow the established order (intelligence abusing strength) was the one they ran with and in that they handled it well.
I'm sure it would appeal to teenage girls but that is no bad thing. I am a middle-aged man and I was entertained.
It is not even close to the best film I have ever seen but I have watched a whole lot worse. Better than average.
