Uttama Villain (2015)
Immortal Classic, Almost
The vision of Kamal Haasan as a writer has been more detailed and way advanced this around than this previous movies. Even though Uttama Villain has a very simple story with an overload of common clichés as well as stated by kh itself in few of his pre-release interviews, the script stands out because of the greatly woven scenes that speak about immortality.
Many people who had watched the preview shows had claimed that Uttama Villain is a 'Blockbuster' material and it belongs to the series of Kamal Haasan's commercial entertainers and not his grand list of experimental movies. True? The movie has tried to be a commercial entertainer, but has failed and is rather a great experimental attempt.
Acting: Wouldn't be surprised if Kamal Haasan wins his 4th National Award for the Best Actor for this movie. He has lived his roles! In addition, all supporting actors have given a performance of their lifetimes. Overall, the acting in this movie is one of the finest in Tamil Cinema and it definitely is soul-stirring
Pisasu (2014)
Compassion
Two words to describe the movie : Emotional, Beautiful
Following the rave reviews and that fact that I have loved most movies of Mysskin, my expectations from the movie were pretty high.
Pisasu is yet another well-written tale from Mysskin. He has given us a new perspective to look at Pisasu; something that is very different from other ghost/horror movies.
Drawbacks: -I felt slightly cheated as I was expecting more horror-filled scenes since the movie was being promoted as a horror thriller. -Naga's acting looked very amateurish
Positives: -An interesting story line and tight screenplay -Great music -Good cinematography -Radha Ravi's performance -Overall impact. Pisasu is beautiful.
Recommend to others? Definitely Show this to my non-Tamil cinema lovers? Yes
Lingaa (2014)
A one-time watch. Only for Rajnikanth
I was very eagerly looking forward to watching Lingaa on the very first day because of all the good hype and the fact that we would be get to see Thalaivar back in action after a very long time. However, after watching the movie I was quite disappointed. Very disappointed, indeed.
POSITIVES: -Rajnikanth - His charisma, style and way of delivering dialogues is amazing. You can easily see vintage Rajni in this movie. He is the only reason to watch this movie. There is nothing else in Lingaa. -Cinematography - One important technician who made everything look grand with his camera angles
NEGATIVES: -Direction - KS Ravikumar's worst till date. Same old techniques. Everything seemed very shallow and lacked detail. The screenplay was not bearable at all.Pretty slow at times.
-Story - Are we Tamilians planning to watch the same old clichéd stories for a 1000 more years? Dad, son, revenge, bad guy etc. Oh! Please. A less than ordinary story. -Bad characters - Villains? I thought they were jokers! Very shallow characterization. -Music - Without any second thought, this is one of ARR's worst in recent years. -CLIMAX - Needless to say, I would be surprised if viral memes aren't created to mock Lingaa's climax
At the end of the day, I feel bad for Rajni sir. I feel that he should have chosen a stronger script for his comeback. And KSR must take note that the tastes of movie watchers has changed tremendously, thanks to new age story tellers and directors of Tamil cinema. He needs to reinvent himself and his direction skills.
Watch it for Rajni sir.Only for thalaivar. There is nothing else in the movie.
The producers have already got back their money by selling distribution rights to Eros.I pity the distributors and theater owners.
I know that many people might down-vote this review and post a 10/10 for the movie. But dear fan-boys, I know that you too are aware of the fact deep down in your heart that this movie sucked big time and Thalaivar deserved something way better.
Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014)
Very good first half. Very bad second half.
Positives: -A never seen before perspective about theater artists in India prior to our independence -Outstanding performances by all actors -Good music by ARR
Drawbacks: -Was not gripping at all. Even the story is fresh and unique, it lacked the punch. The script/story is very shallow and lacks depth. -Very average screenplay
Wish the movie had a better director and a slightly more powerful story. Also, if the movie had a better second half, the overall impact could have been way higher.
Just a one time watch, that too only for the amazing performances of Siddharth, Pritviraj, Nasser etc.
Her (2013)
A beautiful celluloidal poem
'Her' is surprisingly fresh and beautiful. It has been a long time ever since I watched a movie which is so beautiful and shows an amazing picture about human needs, our psychologies, relations and a lot more. Everyone of us needs partners to share our emotions and to explore more about ourselves as well. This movie excels in showcasing few marvels about human nature and our want for something that we can always rely on, talk to, and spend our life with.
The story is simple. A writer who has split with his partner falls in love with an OS.
Yes, this movie is futuristic and most technologies shown in the movie don't exist right now. There are few people who are trying to be critical about the fact that it is not very possible to make an OS which evolves day by day and they bash this movie saying that this is not realistic. However, the beauty of the movie lies in the manner how the character along with his OS evolve with time, the romance between them, the annoying friends, neighbors, a busy city where people have no time to care for others and so on. Very touching romance, and the characterization of Theodore is amazing.
Even in terms of technical aspects, this movie excels big time. Almost everything is perfect in this movie.
The very fact that there are only a couple of characters (2-3) in this movie who have a physical body and all the other characters are only in the form of voices makes it all more interesting.
Joaquin Phoenix has done a splendid job playing the role of Theodore, a man who has lost his love, but writes romantic love letters for others and later falls in love with an OS. Scarlett Johansonn's voice sounds great. She has succeeded in brining in all types of emotions perfectly just in the form of her voice.
I am a very amateur review writer. This movie is extremely beautiful and wanted to let the world know about this. So, gave it a shot.
Vishwaroopam (2013)
A great movie. But not KH's best.
I have been a die hard fan of Kamal Haasan all my life, not just for his skills related to cinema, but because of his principles and philosophies related to life as well. Had been waiting for the movie ever since I watched a short teaser clip released by KH during an award ceremony 1-2 years ago. The trailers promised a very racy action thriller against a backdrop related to international terrorism. Yes. Interesting.
Did the movie live upto the hype and my expectations? Ah. Pretty much.
Writing this detailed review from a neutral POV and not writing this as a fan boy.
Cast+Characterisation: The cast has several popular names as well as few new ones. KH needs no introduction. He has mastered every role that he has played so far. He does his job as an actor extraordinarily. Rahul Bose and Jaideep Ahlawat too were very good. Couldn't find any flaws in their acting. The characterization of Rahul is very interesting. I see Pooja as a surprise package. She is new to the industry and wasn't expecting much. However, she has managed to put up a very decent show and KH being the writer has done a great job framing her character. Andrea's role doesn't have much to do in this movie. Maybe she would have an important role in the sequel. All others have done a decent job. However, I feel that the American actors who have played minor roles as FBI officers etc have done a below average job. Overall: 8/10
Story: A very simple story related to terrorism at the global level and yet another movie depicting Newton's third law. The story has a phase which is thought provoking. There are many parts that take the viewers to the unknown side of terrorists' lives. It is evident that KH has done a lot of research before making this movie. 8.5/10
Direction: The direction is impeccable. Amazing job done. KH has exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. The great uses of metaphors and motifs sets him at a level much above today's Indian directors. This man is a genius. A perfect 10/10
Screenplay + Narration etc: This is one area where the movie fails at certain instances, especially during the second half. The screenplay and narration gets pretty slow mid way. However, it gets back to a good form towards the end of second half. The climax was not liked by many people. It lacked the masala and action that you generally see in typical Indian movies or any movie for that matter. However, the climax was a very smart one. 7/10
Music: The biggest drawback of this movie. Expectations were pretty high given the fact that music has been done by SEL. The background score is very good in the first half hour or so and there is proper use of silence. But, midway first half, there is overuse of silence and the BGM is pretty bad and this continues till the end. Yes, there are certain instances where the BGM is pretty good. But, overall, the music is very very bad. Given the fact that good BGM can complement the screenplay very well, I would say that it is the music which made the narration seem boring at times. 5/10
Use of technology + making: Probably the best making that Indian movies have ever seen. The quality of the cinematography etc etc is on par with that of Hollywood movies. VFX is the biggest plus point in this movie after KH. Madhusudanan has done an amazing job. The movie seems very grand on the big screen and it is very evident that KH is one person that India must rely on if it wants to takes it's movies to the next level, especially in terms of making and use of technology. 9.5/10
Final rating: 8/10
I have watched all movies of KH and especially love the ones that he has directed or written the story for. Even after Vishwaroopam for over a ten times (Yes! I have :) ), I still feel that this is not his best. Virumaandi is much superior to this movie. And, Hey Ram stands out as KH's best work even today and Vishwaroopam fails to replace it.
Controversy? I felt sad seeing my idol tell the media reporters that he is ready to leave the country. All the related incidents were completely unfortunate and it is obvious that the protests were driven by political forces. There is nothing against Muslim, rather this man has supported the goodwill of most Muslims in this movie.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Leonardo DiCaprio will break his Oscar jinx
Went to watch this movie all alone to ensure that I experience every bit of Scorsese's magic. Turned out to be one of the best movies I have watched in recent times. In addition, this movie excels in the black comedy genre.
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio has taken his acting to a whole new level in this one and no wonder Scorsese is interested in casting him time and again in his movies. A perfect 10/10 for Leo. In fact, almost every single actor has excelled in his or her role. Particularly, I loved Matthew McConaughey's role. It was short, yet his character and acting was very cool. The chick looks very hot. Yes, I am talking about Margot Robbie who plays the role of Noami, Leo's wife. My rating for the whole cast is 10/10. It was perfect.
Narration + Screenplay: It is good. Not excellent. I don't think it can be compared to other gems of Martin Scorsese. However, it was not bad at all. The team has ensured that we stay interested in the story, and yes, they have succeeded. However, there are just 1-2 instances when you might feel that the movie is a bit longer than required. Especially in the second half. 9/10
Direction: Rate Martin Scorsese? You must be kidding! 10/10
Laugh riot? Not exactly! Not a laugh riot. But, a very sensible black comedy movie. It doesn't make us laugh by showing chaotic or funny senseless scenes. However, the movie wins big time by bringing on the screen, the right amount of humor at regular intervals. 9/10
Would I recommend this movie? Hell, yeah! This is yet another classic from Scorsese and Leo.
I hope and pray for Leo. Wish he wins the Oscar for his acting finally and breaks his jinx.
