The Edge of All We Know (2020)
Awful
Truly awful, very reminiscent of the BBC Horizon series which always fails to explain anything. The annoying way the same idea is shamelessly repeated to the audience to pad out the documentary is like chalk on a blackboard: narrator: "nothing can escape a black hole", physicist; "nothing can escape a black hole" then another expert: "nothing can escape a black hole". Yes, I get it!
A Perfect Crime (2020)
Excellent and thought provoking
Fascinating documentary which shows how the unification of East and West Germany resulted in a lot of suffering for the population of the former communist country. I wonder if the title of the series is an ironic play on the fact 94% of East German companies ended up owned by West German and international investors. A perfect crime from an East German perspective.
JFK (1991)
Confused spaghetti nonsense
If you take away the impossible nonsense you're left with the truth, once you untangle this nonsense you're left to with the simple fact that Oswald shot Kennedy. This awful film puts Oswald in so many contradictory scenarios and tries to confuse the viewer it stops making sense. As someone who agrees with Gerald Posner's verdict on the Kennedy assassination I find this rambling drivel hard to believe
The Hard Way (2019)
Utter rubbish
Make sure to bring some crackers for this cheesy cliche fest
Hollow Point (2019)
Love it when bad guys get their just desserts
They should turn this into a series. Proper kick ass where justice is done without the help
Of law enforcement
Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
Great Good Guy Bad Guy Movie
The American military at their finest, Trump should be made to watch this in his prison cell...
Afghanistan: The Great Game (2012)
Excellent historical investigation of Afghanistan
Rory Stewart is an experienced diplomat and has knowledge of both the language and history of Afghanistan. Make what you will from this two part historical documentary but please, please ignore the previous reviews of it as they are total and utter right wing crap that somehow imagine the US has been a success in Afghanistan. Just look at the facts. it's enough to say the Taliban is resurgent after the loss of so many lives, but to lamely justify the simple crass objectives against the loss of life is an insult to those American soldiers who gave EVERYTHING for NOTHING, just like British soldiers have across the centuries.
Maria Bamford: Old Baby (2017)
Probably for the fans but refreshingly different
I'm probably a psycho, weirdo, loner or whatever but I enjoyed this. Maria Bamford's comedy focuses on mental health issues so it's probably an acquired taste anyway and I don't think the humour could work unless you can associate with the 'stream of thought' she's in.
The show goes from her performing her routine alone in the mirror to a full theater audience (well partially), which made me feel like I shared a personal journey, well sort of, not sure if that was the intention - or if it matters really. I'm also a fan of 'Lady Dynamite' too so that may influence my opinion.
Ten years ago Christopher Hitchins famously said women 'aren't funny' but don't think he'd seen Maria Bamford perform.
Hannibal (2013)
Troubled FBI Guy needs a punch
Only just got round to watching this on Netflix and after sitting through three episodes it seems I haven't missed much. I have never wanted to punch a main character so much as the whining, 'troubled' character Will Graham. The distorted time-lines and nonsensical incidents, stag daydreams, more stag daydreams, a killer shooting a cop in broad daylight and then leaving a witness so he can be traced, walking into a hospital and managing to get an orderly's outfit and moving a patient without any questions being asked... It's awful, just awful.
