Firefly (2002)
PERFECT MOVIE! Firefly is "worth fighting for".
Being a hardcore "Firefly" fan, going out to see Serenity was a no-brainer. After it was over, I was not disappointed. This movie is amazing. I've always enjoyed Joss Whedon's humour and action in Buffy, and seeing his style cross over into Firefly and Serenity was refreshing.
Amongst the non-stop action, the visuals were perfect. From the beautiful locales and amazing character design and costumes, to the ships and weapons and special effects, this movie is definitely nice to look at. Sound-wise, I love that Joss completely removes all audible audio in space. Just like it should be (in a vacuum, sound cannot be transmitted and therefore cannot be heard). Besides that, the sound effects were spectacular. The story was both well thought out and appropriately complex. And there are more than enough surprises to keep the fanboys guessing.
I loved the acting in FireFly, so it's no surprise that the actors here did a great job, considering they are all the same! Nathan Fillion does a spectacular job as captain Mal, he always has something witty to say, and yet has the strongest will to lead his crew. The only actor that I felt needed a bigger part was Morena Baccarin as Inara. This actress is beautiful and talented, but most of her scenes were cut out of the main movie. Be sure to catch them on the deleted scenes on the DVD.
Overall, this is my favourite movie of the year. I wish that the TV series would come back, but this is a distant possibility. So for now, keep these movies coming, Joss!!!
The Last Casino (2004)
Better than a lot of American movies nowadays!
When I first tuned into this movie on the movie network, I didn't expect much because it is a Canadian film. But by the end of the movie, I had a different appreciation of what Canadian film makers can accomplish. This movie kept me interested throughout, and didn't need a huge budget to do so. The storyline is well written and the direction is top notch. The subtle humor and mature language was also well-placed. If you like cards, or casinos, or movies involving scamming money, this is the film for you. The fairly new cast does a great job. I liked the investor character of Orr, but I especially liked Katharine Isabelle as Elyse. She is a talented actress and beautiful to boot. If you're looking for a good Canadian film, this has got to be one of the best. This is a definite must-see.
