Belgravia: The Next Chapter (2024)
Horrible, mean spirited, illogical departure from season 1
The first season had a happy, Dickensian conclusion in which everyone got their heart's desire. Grumpy Oliver Trenchard even became something of a hero. So why is he a retrospective monster in season 2? And why is his son a completely unappealing psycho? It's like the two stories had nothing to do with each other. To be honest, we only lasted about 15 minutes before we turned it off in disgust. The writers really phoned this one in--in place of the thoroughly entertaining and fairly inventive story of season one, we got a tired, mean-spirited, irrational story that I needed a good cinematic palate cleanse after. So we watched a really well done Indian language movie, Sherni, about the clash between threatened tigers, farmers, politicians, and well meaning but conflicted wildlife managers, which I highly recommend.
Lady Ballers (2023)
Some solid laughs, well made mix of sophisticated and juvenile humor.
It's a very funny movie, if not exactly family friendly. In my opinion, it could have been just as entertaining with half the vulgarity. Tyler Fischer is hilarious and should have had twice the screen time. My favorite moment was his sendup of a particularly obnoxious social media influencer. Matt Walsh's hippy character was endearing and very funny. Overall, I loved the deconstruction of progressive logic. Jeremy Boering is a solid comedic actor and I can't wait to see what he and Daily Wire do next. It's incredible how they're creating movies on a shoestring budget that are way better than mainstream movies with $200 million budgets.
Run Hide Fight (2020)
Original premise, high production values, decent acting
We really enjoyed this movie. It's a very dark premise, a planned school shooting and the girl who decides to fight back. The lead actress was really good as Zoe, the girl with gun skills who outwits the diabolical shooting mastermind, Tristan.
