Si shi qing chun (2018)
Payoff without investment.
It feels like each story went straight for the payoff without actually caring to invest anything to make the payoff worth. There are some moments that are supposed to make you feel something, but I didn't feel anything. It made me frustrated to see what they aimed for but missed. It was pretty, but overall it was just bland and boring.
Eli (2019)
Makes me wish one could rate movies 0/10
I suspect that anyone who would willingly rate this movie higher than 3/10 just accidentally rated the wrong movie. Alternatively, they have never seen a movie before and find the very phenomenon of moving pictures incredibly exciting.
The foreshadowing and the build of tension are made with the elegance of a refrigerator tumbling down the stairs. The twist is so out of nowhere that ANY other twist would have been equally or even more reasonable; such as all the events turning out to be nothing but the dreams of a refrigerator tumbling down the stairs. There is nothing original about the movie, countless movies like this have been made before and they are all better than "Eli".
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
This is how adaptions should be made
As a fan of the manga by Yukito Kishiro I was really hyped for this movie, but I was also worried because of my latest experience of this kind of adaption: the abomination that is Ghost in the Shell. Luckily I found Alita to be very entertaining as well as beautiful to watch.
It is clear that this movie was made by fans of the manga. A lot of changes were obviously made but most of them were for the better, and the makers do not seem to have forgotten the orgininal at any point. The movie takes its plot from a very large part of the manga and this is where its major (and perhaps only) problem is: it sometimes felt cluttered, as if it did not want to leave out anything. I would rather see that they had cut one or two characters, or made the movie a bit longer.
Regardless of whether you love the manga or have never even heard of it, you should watch it. It is definitely worth your time and money.
Hevi reissu (2018)
A beautiful comedy for metalheads
This movie is definitely not for everyone. If metal music is not an essential part of your life, then most of the jokes will probably fly right over your head. Some say the jokes are few, but I say this movie is full to the brim of them, though you will not notice them if you are not familiar with the extreme forms of metal music and culture.
That being said, I would tell every metalhead to stop with whatever they are doing and go watch this film!
Leatherface (2017)
Origin story that lacks origin
The first and most obvious problem with this title is that it claims to be something it clearly isn't. Only a ridiculously small part of this movie is about the Leatherface we know of. The first few minutes and the last minutes of the movie are the only reminders we get, which makes you forget what you are really watching. Of course, the number one reason to watch this movie in the first place would be that you love Leatherface but that is unfortunately not the focus of this movie.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
A beautifully animated forced romance
The visuals of this movie are simply amazing. The animations are truly impressive and beautiful which, in combination with interesting alien designs, make this movie a magnificent feast for the eye. However, it is unfortunately not very appealing to the intellect.
The title in itself is a major problem. "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", where is Laureline in this? As far as I am concerned her part in this story is of just as great importance as Valerian's (if not greater). Valerian is a generic, unoriginal, emotionally incompetent protagonist and was of absolutely no interest to me as a viewer. The action suffered a lot because of this since I really did not care about Valerian at all. I could not find a single thing I liked about him as a character, and the fact that I actually appreciated Laureline made the "romance" feel more like a hostage situation. The fact that she accepts his proposal in the end makes me sick because I did not have a single reason to WANT them to be together.
The plot itself was not very appealing either, it had some unique elements but was poorly composed. The movie has a lot of entertaining scenes, but few of them felt like they contributed something to the main plot. Because of this it all felt out of focus at several points in the movie.
Wish Upon (2017)
One third of entertainment, two thirds of junk!
This movie actually started off as quite entertaining and I was happily surprised as I had been really skeptical about this title. However, it seems like the major problem with this movie is its length. After about 30 minutes it stops being entertaining and just becomes uneventful and boring, like the creators had a great idea but not enough material to make a feature film. To make things even worse, most of the entertainment of the first 30 minutes was not the horror. The movie lacks horror, a lot of it. The perhaps most obvious example of this is Darcie and her rotting skin. She takes her sock of, revealing a black foot and that's it. This made me really disappointed. Some scenes in this movie could have been absolutely terrifying, but they always end before the horror gets a chance to grab the audience.
I like the basic concept of this movie but I hate its execution.
It (2017)
Good movie, but not really horrific
I was absolutely sure that this movie would terrify me, but it does not contain as much horror as one might expect. It contains a lot of humor and the scenes of pure horror are mostly short, which makes the movie feel like an emotional roller-coaster. This might be appealing to some people but I personally prefer the movies that mercilessly hold on to the horror, barely letting go even for a single comic relief.
I enjoyed the movie as a whole, but as I expected to be scared I was disappointed anyway. The CGI looks ridiculous at some points and the funny parts are actually better than the scary parts. I could recommend this movie, but not to anyone who wants to watch a scary horror movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Visually appealing, that's it!
I feel very generous for giving this movie 4/10 as the visual effects is the only good thing about it. The plot feels like the previous movies over again but watered down and the countless desperate attempts to make jokes are based on either sexism or strained stupidity. The few times the jokes are actually funny they are elongated or repeated to the point were they just get annoying.
Though, if one would cut this movie down to 15 minutes of sailing ships and naval battles it would be quite entertaining.
