By Jeeves (2001)
"i have been reduced to a sound effect in my own story"
I have just visited my mums, and because nothing was on TV,this film was put on. Well now i have seen it and its not that bad, like one of the other posters i found the beginning a bit slow, and too be honest most of the songs were a bit "stage showy" which is not my cup of tea, to use a turn of phrase. what i did enjoy was the idea that Wooster was there to give a solo performance but ends up being over whelmed by a bunch of amateur-dramatics types playing ad-hoc characters within a play. The owner of the hall playing a lord on stage, the lighting man playing a love interest and the two ticket sellers playing love-lorn girls. but best of all a mischievous Jeeves as both a character within the "narration" and as the stage manager constantly providing questionable props to Wooster. And all the time Wooster was constantly losing his way both as the "special guest" and as a character within his own story, being corrected/upstaged by Jeeves."I have been reduced to a sound effect in my own story"
Being English his accent didn't bother me. I have heard worse attempts at the accent and not always by actors, try visiting any of the major city estates to hear badly spoken English.
It would be fun to see this redone as a slapstick farce, without the songs Very PG Woodhouse. And yes i also liked the car "do i look silly with this"
Gonks Go Beat (1964)
barking mad film
I still have a copy of this film on VHS video, it came out sometime in the nineties as part of a series of British "musicals" including Tommy Steele and Billy Fury. I have seen it available at boot fairs and second hand record/video shops so i guess others were buying/watching at one time. This is the sort of film that can clear a house of unwanted guests leaving a hardcore of like minded (barking mad) friends to laugh themselves stupid (i know from experience) .it is that bad. like one of the other posters i think the drumming sequence is amazing but the lulu sequence with the "gay looking" backing singer clapping is hysterical "darling do try to look as butch as you can, while clapping your hands in the air, splendid!" as the other posters have noted the songs are not great the acting is awful and the story is virtually non existent so all together a truly awful film right! no! in the right mood and with friends of equal IQ (friday night IQ) its great fun. go and find a copy (somewhere in the UK) and watch. PS when i was at college i even tried persuading the film club to show this, but was turned down in favour of the french film Weekend-from the stupid to the bloody boring...
The Dark Man (1951)
first video and childhood memories
This was the first video i bought to go with my new video player about a decade ago. Having spent a part of my childhood in the area where it was filmed it was fun to spot the locations, the heroine getting on the bus to go to the beach at what looks like Hastings only to get off near the Romney marshes, which is some way to go for a quick bit of sunbathing. The story of the criminal classes up to no good and an innocent bystander in danger has been told many times before, and since. Maxwell Reed as the moody Dark Man is worth the price of the video alone, William Hartnell ( future Dr who)always watchable. But the main reason is seeing the final scenes at the "pre-nuclear" Dungeness coastline. The only negative is with the UK video release which has part of the story missing, I assume this is a copy of the US release which was shorter.
