Power Rangers (2017)
1/10
Nothing for Nostalgia, Nothing for Entertainment
25 June 2017
Who is this movie made for?

Is it for someone like me in his late 20s-early 30's, a long-time Power Rangers fan, and someone who grew up on the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers? No. The only thing that nods it's head at us is a brief 1-second cameo of the original rangers at the end. There is no classic over-the-top action, no martial arts motiff, no swift and rhythmic hand gesturing, no announcement morphing (or hardly any morphing for that matter), and no cool, stellar combat scenes. Not even a flip or an extreme sports sequence. Lastly, they never played the power rangers theme song. Instead, the theme consisted of long, synthesized space riffs. It didn't fit for Power Rangers at all.

Then is it for kids, a younger, new generation? No way. It's terrible. It has no plot. The characters are brash stereotypes, the dialogue is awful and it's not even kid-appropriate.

Is it for action fans? Again, not a chance. This movie had maybe two minutes of fighting, I want to say. And it's not even like Wonder Woman or BvS, which were both short on fighting sequences but what they had were pretty good. The rest was....I don't know, teens trying to "find themselves", and they do that by finding each other, I guess? And becoming Power Rangers?

To sum up, this movie had no right to be produced. At the pre-production phase someone should have asked: who is our audience? In fact, it's a very simple question that should have been asked by the person doing the screenplay, the director, and the producer. It could have saved a lot of agony and a classic brand and franchise from becoming a heap of garbage. The original Power Rangers didn't take itself too seriously. It was about being cool and being bad-ass, flipping around and fighting bad guys, and at the end of the day, jumping in a gigantic robot and taking part in a Godzilla-esque duel in downtown Angel Grove. This one is too touchy feely and not enough kung-pow!

A proper Power Rangers reboot should have over-the-top action, classic branding, and be a tribute to the classic Power Rangers. This film has simply slapped the Power Ranger name on a terrible movie at an attempt to make money.

Sad.

Terra Nova (I) (2011)
7/10
Great Sci-Fi Show. Unique and Fun!
3 November 2016
An old show by today's standards, but just finished it and it was great! Check it out on Netflix, if you haven't already.

I am rating this a 10/10, just to help make up for some lower rankings left by others. It's really between 8.5 and 9.5. It's hard to rate a series off of 13 episodes. It's a shame this show didn't get renewed for a 2nd season. I think 26 episodes would have been sufficient in telling a better story.

It has action, drama and dinosaurs. Very futuristic, yet takes place in a prehistoric wilderness, which makes it unique. The characters are good, mainly centering around the lead character's family and Commander Taylor, who is in charge of Terra Nova. The personalities and dramas that stem from these characters aren't wildly ambitious but do a good job with mixing in the environment and creating conflict with all the dangerous elements: dinosaurs, diseases, and the Sixers (human antagonists).

I read a review on here complaining about all the plot holes. One major plot hole complaint was "why aren't the future people putting on sunscreen when they get here?" Seriously? That's your big plot hole. First of all: maybe they are and it's just such a boring addition that it's not even necessary. That would be a waste of time. Who wants to watch that? Secondly, it may be an oversight but so what? It's science fiction. Suspend your disbelief a little bit. Obviously cracks in time don't really exist, but if they did........well, that is the basis of the show. If you can't get over that and start nitpicking about sunscreen right off the bat, then maybe this show isn't for you and you should watch people crossing the street outside your window. Can't get any more real than that!

Last little fun fact: the pink ranger from the new Power Rangers is in this. Also, the new inhuman director of S.H.I.E.L.D. from Marvels Agents of SHIELD.
