The Stag (2013)
Stale Comedy
That's all I can say to describe this film. Now I can appreciate it not being another wannabe Hangover movie but come on. How can this be described as a comedy? Yes there are a few funny grunt moments here and there but the whole thing just comes off as annoying. By the way The Machine? How many times does a character have to call someone by their nickname beginning with The? The overuse of this nickname is mind-numbing, yes that's his nickname but why not just say "hey, machine" after mentioning him in the beginning? You never hear the characters in Old School refer to Hank as Hank The Tank every single time they mention him or speak to him in the movie. Why? Because it get's irritating.
Now I understand that past reviewers have mentioned the deep message in the film, and while I appreciate it, it just doesn't flow well with the promotion of this movie. The title is called The Stag, set in Ireland, with the movie poster depicting what you might think would be a hilarious stag party set in Ireland. But no. Instead it's about a web designer, a gay couple, two best friends who are in love with the same woman and a guy who calls himself The Machine (which is a really bad nickname to give someone, the writers could've been a little more creative in this area) running around in the woods like...well as Red Forman would say, "a bunch of dumba****.
The characters and the general idea of a stag party in Ireland is a great premise for a film. But the story is just not what I was expecting. Why not have it start in the city and then with the crazy antics with the so called The Machine all of a sudden end up in the outskirts of the city and then get lost in the woods. Simple outline just write a raunchy creative story. And I'm sorry but the whole Ruth breaking up with Davin and then getting with his best friend just seems shady on her part for not telling Fionan about it. Just makes me wonder if she can be all that faithful to Fionan after their marriage. If it was some random guy then whatever but it was the guy's best friend. Have some decency.
Well that's pretty much it, as I said before the message is a great one and that's the only reason I'm giving it a 5 out 10. Without it it would just be a really stale more dramatic than comedic story about a enlightening journey through the woods.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Same As The Previous Transformers But With A Better Cast
You know it's a transformers movie, you know it's directed by Michael Bay, you know his style of filmmaking and storyline yet you continue to watch it and give it a low rating, why? Because it's not your style of films. One thing I like about critics giving low ratings, is when the movie triples even quadruples it's production budget basically giving the middle finger to the movie critics. So why not stick to your style of films and leave movies like this for people who want to be entertained by non-stop action. Yes this movie is just like the last transformers movies except a whole lot more action and in my opinion a better cast. It's nice to watch a transformers movie and not have to deal with Shia Lewhatever his name is complain and act like an idiot throughout the film. It was entertaining, definitely a Michael Bay film. Oh and props to whomever edited the movie, must have been a hassle with all those fighting scenes.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)
Amazing!
Having never seen Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, I didn't know what to expect from this show. Only thing I could think of was "oh it's on Fox, they'll probably cancel it after a few episodes." Well all I can say is Fox better not make the same mistake it did with Firefly because this show is spectacular! It's a well produced, directed and narrated documentary about Space (hence Space-Time Odyssey) and many other scientific topics that I would find mind numbing if I were learning it in a science class.
I think it's great how the creators use animation and stunning visual effects to demonstrate how the universe came to be. And honestly I've learned some interesting facts along the way (which is obviously the whole purpose of the show). Seth MacFarlane hit a home run on this one, and I really hope they continue this series for awhile. Even if Fox decides to cancel it, I'm pretty sure another network will pick it up.
The Legend of Hercules (2014)
Not What I Expected.
Can't believe this was directed by the same guy who directed Die Hard 2. I am truly disappointed how it turned out. It felt as though the writers didn't even put any effort while working on the script. The main actors gave horrible performances. The scenes just kept skipping. I seriously haven't seen a film this bad since I saw Disaster Movie. Maybe this should have been called The Disaster of Hercules.
Renny Harlin should take some directing lessons from Ridley Scott and Peter Jackson because he cannot shoot an epic film. The movie could have easily been made into a television series and I think if it were, Harlin would have payed more attention to detail and the storyline because he would've had more time to shoot each scene in depth. Also maybe would've thought twice before hiring Kellan Lutz as Hercules.
