Rather (2023)
Brilliant
In an era where journalism is often under fire and trust in media is waning, there's something deeply nostalgic and reassuring about immersing oneself in the long career of a reporter present during pivotal moments in history. From the assassination of President Kennedy to interviews with Martin Luther King, questioning Nixon, and Bush W., "Rather" (2023) is a poignant reminder of the power and impact of journalism.
"Rather" (2023) is a documentary about Dan Rather long career in journalism, which includes his falling from grace in the early 2000s and his re-emergence in later decades in social media and many other platforms. In his 90s, Rather continues to be a reporter. He is and will be a reporter until his last breath. But watching this documentary also takes us on a trip through the United States history, at least modern history, from segregation in the late 1950s to our days. Rather has seen so many things, covered them all, and has been witness to history. And this film shows us that.
"Rather" (2023) is a meticulously crafted documentary that offers a compelling narrative about a man who has played a significant role in many US history chapters. It's a film that informs and engages, leaving the audience with a deeper understanding of the events that have shaped our world.
Unfrosted (2024)
Great comedy
This movie is well-written and made me laugh from the beginning. There are so many clever dialogues, lines, and great actors. Made to laugh, not for festivals or disgruntled critics. Also, you must know about pop culture and history to understand the many references made. If you don't get the jokes, the joke is on you. The more you know, the more you understand the film. Don't blame the movie for your ignorance.
Also great cast, reminiscent of those old comedy films with plenty of cameos.
A good and well made comedy to laugh and enjoy, nothing more. If you expect too much maybe you won't get what you want, just relax and enjoy it.
Apples Never Fall (2024)
The best and the worst
The best: The story, Annette Bening and Sam Neil. It is a good story. Annette's speech in the last episode to Allison Brie is one of the best parts. It reflects many women's reality. The best episodes are the ones where the story centers on Bening and Neil's characters. You can see the acting experience in both. Simply the best.
The worst: The couple's four grown "children." All four are spoiled, privileged, annoying humans. Their perspectives of life are dull and pampered. They took too much time to react to the situation at the story's core.
Overall, it is good, but it could be better in many other ways.
Blue Beetle (2023)
A good film full of cultural references
Ignore the bad reviews and enjoy a great film about a Latino superhero with plenty of cultural references to the Mexican and Mexican-American culture. Also, there are many references to historical events that have shaped the history of Latinos in the US.
Good story, actors, music, and special effects.
This film gives a good representation of Latinos and breaks with how Hollywood has represented Latinos throughout history. Embrace the film. Yes, it is not Superman or Batman, but it is Blue Beetle, and it is an enjoyable film.
If you don't get the cultural references, learn about them, but do not blame the film for your lack of knowledge.
A Million Miles Away (2023)
Great story and a great film that shows why representation matters
If you want to watch a good film about a real person in a time suffocated by influencers and manufactured celebrities, watch "A Million Miles Away" a biopic of Jose Hernandez, the first farmworker who went to space. This film is what people have asked about Hollywood movies: accurate representation and inspirational stories that show Latinos that we can dream and reach out for those dreams. Also, the story shows how the support of having good teachers at an early age can shape any child's future, highlighting the role teachers have in their students' lives.
The film is directed by Alejandra Marquez Abella, a Mexican film director, and all the actors are great in the movie, starting with Michael Peña and Rosa Salazar, Julio Cesar Cedillo, and Veronica Falcon, to name a few.
The film is well made, with good photography, music, cinematography, and storytelling. "A Million Miles Away" is available on Amazon Prime.
The Out-Laws (2023)
Entertaining comedy to laugh
Ignore de bad reviews. This is a comedy that will make you laugh. Yes, it is not an award-winning film, and whoever expects that from this film is completely lost. But it is a comedy to make you laugh, and that's all you get.
Probably many forget Brosnan achieve fame in comedy in Remington Steele back in the 80s, and here he connects with his comedy roots.
Good list of comedy actors and plenty of good marks in the script and dialogs.
"The Out-laws" is a simply comedy, not a complicated story and that's what makes it more enjoyable.
This is a comedy to laugh and that's what you get, nothin less nothing more. Enjoy!
Harry & Meghan (2022)
A well done personal film
One thing that I do not understand is why people hate it so much, Meghan Markel. The only thing that is left to try to understand the hate she receives in the media and social media is because she is mixed race. Megan and Harry's documentary was announced several months ago and premiered recently. Some people were upset because the first trailer premiere coincided with the visit of the Prince of Wales and his wife to the nation. Coincidence or not, the hate continues. The documentary opens the door to the couple's world, showing never seen photos and videos. It is a space where they tell the story of their lives before and after they became a couple. The film is well-made and includes interviews with people close to the couple, such as friends, family, and people who work with them.
Some people criticize them for speaking up, especially her, but I question why people consume whatever media story they feed and prefer that to whatever they want to say on their terms. Many people accuse her of making him break with his family, but why blame her? Did she force him? Apparently, no, because he says it was his choice, but still, people don't listen.
I have seen over the years many documentaries about the royal family from different perspectives and presented by many "royal experts." The members of the family themselves have participated in very few films. I remember in the 1990s when Diana was interviewed after her separation and when she spoke up about what today Harry and Meghan continue to talk about: the rigidity of the royal family and the need the institution has for change. And hearing both films tell us that little has changed in one of the world's oldest monarchies. However, even though Diana's words were controversial then, she never was attacked as Meghan has been. And maybe, one big reason was that Diana was white, and Meghan was not. People can be racists even without accepting they are, which is called unconscious bias.
"Harry & Meghan" is a good documentary for those interested in the royal family and the many layers such an institution has.
Halloween Ends (2022)
Time to say goodbye to Michael.
All good things must end, and Michael Myers and Laurie Strode's story had to have a good end. This is a good final to the saga of Michael Myers. Full of details that take us to the original, only those true fans will recognize them. Each of those details takes us to the first film back in 1978.
Time to put to rest the story of Michael and Laurie, and they did a great job. It is not perfect, but it is not bad or boring. This is the last chapter, everything had to end, and they did it well. Those expecting something else must look for other movies. This is the end of a 44 year old saga, and it is a good closing. Ignore the bad reviews and enjoy it, plain and simple.
The Princess (2022)
Great video material. It could be done better
I love documentaries more when they include archival materials such as videos and documents. This documentary is full of videos from the early 1980s to 1997 covering the time Diana passed from Prince Charles's girlfriend to her death. However, the film does not offer a timeline, a context, or an interview that helps situate the viewer in the images they are watching. For those who lived through those times, it is not challenging to situate themselves in the time situations shown in the archive videos happen. But anyone who did not live during those years can feel lost in the film. It feels like the people behind the film had to access all that video material and focus mainly on the editing part forgetting about the viewers. It could be done much better.
Father of the Bride (2022)
A good version
I have seen all previous film versions of this story, and this is a good one. It is not a festival or Academy Awards film, but it is an entertaining and refreshing movie.
The cast is full of familiar faces to those who know more than Hollywood entertainment, and those who say most are unknown actors are showing their ignorance.
This is a good time film, with comedy, culture, sabor, and more. Enjoy it.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Not boring, a good remake
I prefer Ustinov Monsieur Poirot even more than Finney, but Branagh does a good job as he did it before. I don't understand the bad reviews. Maybe most of them are people who are used to more actions and special effects. But this is an enjoyable film with a great cast, music, and plot that takes some details from its 1970s predecessor.
Forget the bad reviews, watch it, and judge by yourself.
Thunder Force (2021)
Funny film for open-minded people
Funny and entertaining. It is a satire of superheroes that happen to be middle-aged women. Many negative reviews are probably done by narrow-minded misogynist people who praise the four-hours movies around the same heroes from eight decades ago but cannot enjoy new proposals. This is a funny movie for those willing to get out of the box of the mass produced super heroes movies offered today.
No te puedes esconder (2019)
Waste your time watching something else
I tried to give this series the benefit of the doubt mainly because Noriega and Verdú are part of the cast. However, I was disappointed by the plot, the dialogues, some scenes, and the acting of part of the cast. The story is boring, full of cliches, and does not aport anything new to the genre. I watched enough episodes until I gave up. This series is not worthy of your time. Watch something else.
Mad About You (1992)
An excellent TV comedy and a wonderful season 8
I watched Mad About You back in the 1990s. Recently I watched all the first seven seasons and enjoyed each episode. Watching the episodes again brought back so many memories. Season eight is great! The continuation in Season eight, after two decades, was made smoothly, and everything connects. All the characters maintain their essence. Well done!
Coded Bias (2020)
A must-watch
"Coded Bias" is a highly recommended documentary about how algorithms are biased not because of the computers but because of the data they a fed on ending discriminating against women, people of color, and minorities. Many interesting points about how we are being used as data by AI without knowing and without consent. Also is a refreshing film because, unintentionally, according to the director of the film, most of the people that appeared in it are women, at least two of them African Americans, with higher degrees. A well-done movie about another modern way how we all are being discriminated: algorithms are used today in everything, hiring processes, college applications, layoffs, and the scary part are that those decisions are not being made by humans but by computers. It does not matter what you do, your trajectory, awards, if the algorithm reads you are a woman, a woman, or men of color, the probabilities of being denied a credit card, a college application, a job are higher because of these algorithms that are everywhere. A good documentary, very current, definitely a must-watch.
Half Brothers (2020)
An enjoyable comedy
"Half Brothers" is a comedy with plenty of messages. It includes an immigration story like Hollywood rarely portrays it: with the heart. It also shows a story where the central characters are men but whose stories tell the viewer that men can be emotional, they suffer, and there is nothing wrong to show it. It is a transnational story that reminds us that we have a humanity that connects us more in-depth than our cultural and linguistic differences. It is a bilingual comedy with a heart that will provide you a good time in these uncertain times we are living in. "Half Brothers" is a feel-good movie that is not a cinematic masterpiece. Still, it does its work: entertain with a message that can resonate not only with Latinos but with people of different cultural backgrounds.
Cindy la Regia (2020)
Funny comedy
This is a comedy very similar to Legally Blonde but Mexican style. Entertaining and funny, nothing more.
Made in Mexico (2018)
Pure trash
This show is like the Mexican version of the Kardashian: a show about talentless rich people who live in a bubble far away from Mexico's reality and their world of luxury and elite social life in Mexico City. This is not representative of Mexico in any way or form.
Más negro que la noche (2014)
Bad remake
This movie is a remake of a 1975 film directed by Carlos Enrique Taboada. The original is by far much better than this 2014 version. The new version is full of bad acting, bad dialogues and lots of clichés. It's a horror movie, but you end up laughing watching it. I watched years ago the original, and I do believe this new version was a complete failure. The sad part is that good actor work in this film, such as Margarita Sanz, she is an extraordinary actress, but in this film, her talent is completely wasted.
