Dead to Me: I Have to Be Honest (2019)
just a moment of joy (and a time of sadness)
I love this series and especially this episode, and I wanted to write this review to remind myself why.
The opening sequence of Christina Apple gate's dance number is brilliant in conveying her character's joy and passion for dance. I have rewatched that scene so many times - the music, the energy, and Christina Applegate's talent make up an inspiring happy place.
However, the juxtaposition of Jen's happiness against Judy's devastation is what starts this episode off as riveting.
Then. Nick's intensity. Steve's smarminess.
The actors showcase their characters' strengths so well.
What really keeps me coming back to this entire series is the relationship between Jen and Judy. I don't know if it's dysfunctional or co-dependent or psychologically questionable, but it it's a close friendship with an unbreakable bond through all of their struggles. It's heartening to see such a depth of feeling that overcomes very human mistakes (meaning the lies and anger and poor decisions, not the murder(s)) and outlasts other relationships in each of their lives.
