The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
Arguably the best movie ever!
Wyler's direction in nothing short of amazing. He brings the hidden internal conflicts of returning from war out in the open and gratfully puts it right in your face. These people in this film are real people dealing with real issues and it shows under his direction Andrews and Wright are nothing short of perfect. His is probably the best performance of his career and Wright is wonderful, matching her achievement in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. If you have read most of the reviews associated with this film you can understand why it is not necessary to look at each individual and their performance so i wont. An exceptional motion picture with the remarkable cast.
The best movie ever? Yeah I know. There are probably 10 or so films you could put that label on. But man....this one comes really, really close.
Sextette (1977)
What?
This film was mediocre at best. Ms. West was at her best during the early part of her career. This was her mostly self funded swan song. Some of her friends were asked to and accepted parts in order to salvage a so so screenplay and somewhat better original play penned by Ms. West.It had its moments but thats about it
Further interest was peaked when I read a review dated 2006 from someone who not only gave it a "10", but for a better word drooled over Ms. West for most of his review. He also stated that she was not just one of but "the greatest actress of all time". What?????. I believe he needs to get out of the house more often.
