Very moving and interesting documentary about the children who left continental Europe to escape the Nazis. Via letters, archive film and interviews you hear the story of the European Jews before, during and after their persecution by the Nazis. For anyone who says "why didn't they leave before the Holocaust" should watch this to see how difficult it actually was to escape the Nazis even before WW2

A cerebral action movie

One of the most accurate sea dating I've seen. Some called it boring but it realistically shows life at sea due the British hey day. First rate cinematography, acting, set design etc.
Shame they never made a planned for sequel

One of the years best

Glad that I watched this movie before the Oscar nominees were announced. I feel a number of people Judge it harshly bcos it won a film over other equally excellent movies
In my opinion it's definitely one of the best movies of 2019-2020.
Excellent performances and a harsh view of people at the bottom
The movie switches very quickly from comedy to drama to violence near end.
Sad open ended finale.
Highly recommend

A Fortunate Life

A bygone era

Great historical document on how life was for the country working class of Australia. Has aged pretty well and is based of one of the most loved Australian autobiographies that has been written
Great performances by the various kids playing Bert. Also features numerous great Aussie actors such as Ray Meagher and Bill Hunter
The 4th and final episode is based in Egypt and than Gallipoli. Excellent depiction of wartime from an Australian point of view

Patchy movie

At times it's a great movie with a star studded cast but times it's quite average (I loath the scenes that use narration - very lazy storytelling).
The set design, costumes and acting are top notch but this un-Tarantino style film isn't one of his best

I've studied history and watched or read numerous books on the subject of WW2 and the holocaust. I may have missed the point but for me it's pulling out the old Good nazi line when in fact the majority of Germans went along and actively supported Hitler (even kids).
Well made movie but unlike a lot of people who were saddened by ending I thought the family got what they deserved

Typically great Scorcese

Great to see Pesci,De Niro and Pacino in a gangster movie together. The movie is a tad overlong but still enjoyable. Excellent supporting cast including Ray Romano,Bobby Cannavale,Harvey Keitel plus many more
Best to watch as a mini series (breaking up into a number of episodes)
Even though it's not in my top 5 Scorcese movies it's still better than most movies made today.

Took me while to watch this movie due to loathing Hollywood's habit of remaking successful foreign movies.
I was surprised at how much I liked this remake of the Israeli movie (which I loved).
The cast all do a great job but while the movie is still a pale imitation of the original it's still a good way to spend a few hours

Robbed of many AACTA awards

Warning: Spoilers
Another excellent Australian movie robbed of AACTA awards (wasn't even nominated in most of the categories in a shocking decision by academy)
It gets off to a shaky start with the first 20 minutes marred in my opinion by average acting but as the movie rolls on the cast seem to improve their performances. The editing, sound etc is top notch and this movie deserves to be more successful than what it was
One of the best Aussie movies of the last decade and one of the best war movies I've seen

I always try to watch Australian movies to support industry. This one is a beautifully shot movie that has many flaws. Sadly falls into the black armband view of that all English characters have to evil.
Dont really think it should've won as many Aussie film awards and that many other deserving films missed out. Unsure why Magnolia Maymuru won the best supporting award when she barely appears in movie and wasn't that amazing (thought actress from Hotel Mumbai should've won). Aisling Franciosi as Clare Carroll was excellent and did a great job throughout movie
If you see it on Foxtel give it a chance but don't expect too much
