Cursed (2020)
All in all more bad than good
Well, I'm now into episode 7. Which is further than most reviews go. I kind of enjoy the show, because it's something new but the quality is so bad. Let's start with what is good from my point of view. The sets seem to be very well crafted, and I like Merlins cape. Other than that it is utter rubbish. The writing is trash, most of the acting is trash, the costumes are trash. The over-the-top violence is just so plainly used to give this whole series a "grown-up-feeling". If you want to watch some good fantasy for grown-ups: watch "THE WITCHER"!!!!! Seriously. Nothing really worth seeing here.
The Old Guard (2020)
More than I expected
I was expecting an action movie. But what I got was so much more. The understanding of greed today is quite buntly depicted by the bad boy CEO. But it is in that bluntness, where the truth lies. Mankind wants to have more. It's not satisfied by completely destroying this earth and each other by war and pollution. But the highest reach of them all is immortality. Mankind wants to live forever, completely denying that the earth could never hold as many people, as it is already overcrowded. The complete negation of this is shown in this movie. And the other side shows the people who lived with humanity for so or too long. They have seen war, seen cruelty and have enough of it. They didn't choose their existence but have to live with it whether they want to or not. Although irrationally fantastic, reality lies in the fact, that we do know our past. We can learn or read about history and know our failings, know what has been and what we could do better. But a vast majority just wants to reach that greedy ultimate goal immortality as the highest act of dominating the kosmos. But as Andromeda first said, that god doesn't exist, she later tells Booker to have a little faith in regard to what comes 'after'. I think everybody should think about this movie on a meta level. It's worth it.
Wonder Park (2019)
Wonderful for everyone who still uses their imagination
I didn't have very high hopes for this animation movie. The trailer looked alright and I wanted to have a good time watching something light. But it turned out to be something quite different. I cried 4 times. One time really hard. I laughed out loud at least 3 times and was on the edge of my seat at least 2. That says a lot already. The deeper meaning of wonderpark was really moving, as in face of a tragedy we often loose sight of what could make us happy or even just balance out our feelings. For me it was like a manifestation of June's feelings in form of those animals, and she had to understand them and get back into contact with herself.
I think the movie also is (from a gender point of view) depicting marvellously how girls are smart, full of inventions and motivation. How you can inspire other people and give some happieness to the world around you, if you share your inspiration. I just loved the whole thought that went into the messages behind it all.
The only, really only thing I kind of thought of as a little overboard were the "antagonists"... Although I liked the feeling of not having to invest in the character of a real bad guy. ;)
The Musketeers (2014)
Disappointing Writing
You can definitely give the series at least some regard for their sets and costumes but a good story is based on... well exactly that: A GOOD STORY!!!
I really rather fought myself through the first four episodes and was already disappointed. The storyline, how it all comes together and the portrayal of the figures we are just getting to know is plump and sometimes unhinged. After the first episode, where revenge has been taken... (IN ONE EPISODE?!?!) the following are built up like a more boring crime show. Every episode the three musketeers and their sidekick get a "case" they must deal with within that episode and this doesn't let much room for building their personality or depth. It's a rush of some stuff that really didn't get me that involved or it even made me shake my head at the bad dialogue and the flimsy reasons why characters do react in particularly that one way. To the personalities... the creators are trying really hard to give the characters a bad side, as to get to a grey zone instead of black and white. They fail. It's still black and white because they just don't really pull off the bad.
Oh well. I'm giving up on this and moving on to something more worth my while.
Lily & Kat (2015)
Please take that movie back... please, please, please
The only thing I liked about this movie was the music and some of the pictures. Standing pictures. The whole concept of the movie is based on the situation between those girls. Lily isn't really played by a strong actress, so the opposition to Kat has completely failed. The storyline itself is not exciting, not gripping, not very meaningful. It is a story about girls in the beginning of their twens. From my own experience I can say, that they are barely adults and that is what dominates this movie. Unrational, childish behavior. And how this plays out over the whole picture, and how it is made and woven is, subsequently observed, very poor. I would have liked the movie without the conversations and without the video. Just the music and some art-like looking stills. That would have been enough. No ground breaker, no beautiful background or relationships. Just poor judgment, despair and a little failure. Do we really need that in a medium, that is kinda supposed to let us escape from that darned reality? I almost couldn't stand it till the end. But I wanted to see, if at least that was somehow resolving or meaningful. But it wasn't. A total waste of time.
Aloha (2015)
This is a heartbeat movie
Aloha is one of the finest woven movies I experienced in a long time. Not only are the people completely believable in their individual personalities, but also the interactions are so fun and touching to watch. I loved the entwinement of tradition, mystics, being human and those deeply true seeming backgrounds. It is really hard to forge a movie, which is not defined by mind-blowing action scenes but also doesn't lack a really good storyline behind it. There are a lot of movies out there, that can't survive without a lot of bad language, crime, tragedy or other bad stuff happening. So watching this movie is just such a relieve for my movie-fanatic heart. It contains all, that is really important and is so much deeper than one could guess in the beginning. I am very happy, that i found it. Definitely one of my top 50 of all my movie-history!
Final Girl (2015)
OK to watch
There is only a four in it this time. I will tell you why. Abigail Breslin, as in the former review already stated, did her best... but it wasn't really enough. The role, in my opinion, would have suited Amber Heard or Chloe Grace Moretz, who already participated in really mind-blowing Thrillers, much more than her. Breslin just didn't make the cut, or is not cut out for a movie like that. You really feel, that she is just playing a role and as the main character this gave me the reason to lower the 10 points by 5. The 5 remaining points are for the other actors, who played their parts very well and perfectly shaped.
I would have liked more action between Victoria and her trainer though. That part of the story was apparently just for a quick amusement and without deeper meaning or intention. All in all, I didn't really like the surrounding story. The action itself is handled fairly OK, under the circumstances.
But really, to come back to the plot... As I understood it, and think it is wrongly pictured in the other comment, Victoria was selected for a program, which lead to a series of commissions prior to the one with the four boys. Because how could she be trained for events, that would take place maybe 10 years from her recruitment date. And I also think her trainer didn't start in that program because his wife and kid were murdered by those boys, because they would have been damn young to do that. So that start of the story is really not carried out so well. I would have liked a little more base, and wouldn't have minded another half an hour or more for that. So one point less for storyline as well. My final finding is, that it's just watchable.
