Empire (2015)
Auto Tune City
They auto tune so much in this show, the music feels like it just doesn't belong in the show. I just watched the youngest son do an impromptu song at an informal family gathering that was auto tuned. Apparently they all wear devices on them where ever they go. A duet between Terrence and May J had him auto tuned and her not. It was actually laughable. I mean, does Kayne do all the music for this show? Aside from that, here is a show where African-Americans could choose to show themselves in a successful, responsible, honorable and loving light, but instead choose to portray everyone as selfish, violent, racist, intolerant, narcissistic and shallow. Such a lost opportunity.
God's Not Dead (2014)
Not Very Christian
What do we really learn from this movie: 1. That Christians are intolerant of other belief systems, 2. That Christians see persons who have different beliefs as vile, violent and idiotic (even though the completely ridiculous Robertson family appearance was highlighted by "when I aim, I shoot to kill, not maim." Why would any religion put these people (Robertsons) front and center as an example of anything good and decent? 3. That Christians have no idea how to craft a compelling argument, 4. That Christians believe every non-Christian is just wrong and deserving of their pity.
This movie is so far from the quality of the even an older after-school special, that light from an after school special would take a million years to illuminate the bigotry endemic in this piece of garbage.
Sharknado 2: The Second One (2014)
Actually is a Hurricane.
There are a lot of people who enjoy watching what they call "B" movies because they can shut their brains off and just watch. This is the perfect movie for them because it seems that everyone involved with the making of this movie did just that, shut their brains off. There is a difference between camp and stupid. Unfortunately in this age of dumbed-down everything, that difference is blurred by the stupidity of the audience. Just try to imagine the person that the makers of this movie envisioned as fans when they were developing ideas (the fact that they tagged it as "the second one" after putting 2 in the title is a clue).
Ignoring the bad writing, bad acting (horrendous to be exact), lack of scale and production value, the movie is left with a completely ridiculous and incomprehensible premise. Inserting cameos of recognizable people (Andy Dick?, Matt Lauer?, Kelly Ripa?) to boost awareness (again for the nondiscriminating audience member)exceeded in only making the movie look desperate to hang on to the small target they were shooting for (advanced by the fact that these "celebrities" appear to be amenable to do anything for a paycheck). Fortunately, the movie was on Syfy, a haven for this type of garbage, and is unlikely to infect other outlets since Syfy has become the butt of these types of jokes. Some day I will forgive myself for wasting two hours of my life watching this disaster.
Friends with Better Lives (2014)
Friends With Better Shows
I whole-heartedly disagree with those that term this show adult humor. Most of my friends are educated and are tired of the juvenile, gutter humor that has infested every network comedy. To these writers, comedy means try to be more vulgar than anyone else. Two weeks off the air (which will be soon) and this show will be totally forgotten. The women characters are especially reprehensible. Why any actress would agree to portray women of such low moral character is beyond me. Oh! I get it, it is so they will be considered for the next network piece of trash. I don't know who any of these actors are, except JVB, and I don't suppose I will ever hear of anything they will ever do in the future. This is not comedy, it is tragedy. It's another sign that insults and humiliation have replaced humor in our society. My only advice to the cast of this lowest-level garbage is that they need to be Actors With Better Agents.
Crisis (2014)
Still Love Gillian Anderson
The Crisis seems to be that all government personnel as well as the richest and most powerful citizens and their children are all idiots. This is even worse than Hostages (although it often seems like they used the same script and I do sometimes get Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney mixed up). And it is nice to see that being taken hostage doesn't affect the rich kids' narcissism and self-centered sense of entitlement. None of us knows yet what the real purpose of the abduction was. But as time goes on, I care less and less. There is no one to root for here. Agencies fight with agencies. Parents fight with agencies. Parents fight with parents. Please see any BBC series where people with fundamental differences come together, over all adversity, to solve the problem. That is not the case with Crisis.
Bad Milo! (2013)
Very Bad Milo!
Unfortunately, I could not give this movie 0 stars, but awful does sum it up. The appearance of so many glowing reviews here and the fact that the rating is only 5.7 must be the result of production staff artificially raising the appeal factor of the movie by entering these ridiculous reviews online. One reviewer stated that most of the people viewing the movie "are intellectuals." If you read that review, I guess, compared to the reviewer, that statement would be correct. Of course, he could also be referring the the other members of his kindergarten class. There just is nothing good to say about this movie. A cult classic? Never. I doubt more that 10 people will ever read these reviews anyway.
Mixology (2013)
Missology
It's too bad that trashy shows like this seem to be all that the networks can produce these days. I guess there are those Einsteins that frequent bars and act like this so this childish, immature, baseless drivel would appeal to them, but hopefully, educated people would turn away. I find it shocking that anyone would find a show about adults acting this way entertaining. I truly feel sorry for them. Sure TV shows are not real life and we need to give a lot of leeway concerning plot and substance. But, there are already too many morons on the air, it is time we up the ante. It is time TV executives stop producing shows for those with less than a third grade education or that call themselves blowfly and start creating product for educated watchers before they all just leave the bar.
