The first 10 minutes seemed to promise a fairly original, stylishly crafted thriller, thanks to the flawless retro-setting, the almost choreographed acting of the characters and the saturated colors. But as soon as the time-frame changed to the present, the whole thing collapsed into a blatantly generic ghost-horror.
We were treated to a truckload of worn-out clichés, like dead people alternately appearing and fading, ancient books full of demonic references, and a ritual complete with burning candles, a circle of chanting participants wearing capes and silly masks, and a woman bound to an altar, awaiting to be impregnated by some devilish entity.
Clichés can still be fun, if well done, but here unfortunately the story got more and more chaotic, with ghosts hopping in and out of bodies, and characters that turned out to be already dead, so any remaining credibility quickly went down the drain. The acting was unconvincing too, as if the cast didn't really believe in this project themselves, which was a pity, because Shane West and especially Chelsea Gilligan are very pleasant to look at. But a few attractive actors aren't enough to make a good movie.
