Vedo nudo (1969)
Nino Manfredi = grande talento
Not his most famous film, but combine his talent with director Dini Risi and you can't go far wrong. One other user left a review and my reactions were different, so I am writing this as a point of comparison.
1) La Diva. The star-worship satire hits the spot here, with the great Sylva Koscina playing herself, a movie star whose presence distracts Dr. Manfredi from his duties. 7/10
2) 'Processo a Porte Chiuse' Short and hysterical, this caused a scandal on release. The other reviewer got it wrong - this is not about a chicken thief! The dialect is thick, but Manfredi's impression of how he was provoked is priceless! 9/10
3) Ornella. A sensitive, repressed Manfredi meet the man with whom he has been sharing tender letters under the guide of a women What could have been crude is in fact a surprisingly tender sketch and holds up even today. 10/10 Best in the film!
4) Il Guardone. Short Peeping Tom sketch with a great pay-off! 8/10
5) L'ultima Vergine. So dated that it ruins the fun - almost. 5/10
6) Motrice Mia. Kinky and creative! 8/10
7) Vedo Nudo. OK, he sees nudes. We get the satire; the culture has gone tittie-crazy and so has Manfredi, who has to go in for a cure. Could have been great at half the length, but it really drags. 4/10
In Italia si chiama amore (1964)
Nino Manfredi and Italy 1963
First big plus of this film is that is it narrated with both charm and irony by Nino Manfredi. The film is comprised of many brief scenes, presumably reenactments of actual events, as the news clippings are often shown. Perhaps they are the people themselves in some cases, as the film claims to be a documentary -- and these clearly are not professional actors. The episodes show not only the 'relations between the sexes' and presumed social mores, but also an interesting filmic portrait of Italy during this transition of the BOOM years, with 'old ways' still in evidence, plus a new 'modernity' Worthwhile film, even for the vintage cars and look of the era. I found it on you tube. My review needs more lines, so I can say Buon divertimento!
La ragazza con la pistola (1968)
Fun film worth looking for. *And* Monica Vitti!
The first 15 minutes of this are just classic, with Vitti being 'kidnapped' - and a little too ready for seduction, even as she moans "I am cold as marble, you are kissing a dead woman!" The rest of the film has several fine comedic sequences, with Vitti ready to call out every 'putana'who does not meet her strict moral code as she searches for the man who betrayed her. I gave it 8 stars as I had such a good time watching it!
As my review needs more lines, I can mention that La Vitti won a few awards for her performance, and that the film itself was nominated for Best Foreign Film. So while the costumes and concepts make this something of a period piece, don't think it is not make worthy of viewing. Very enjoyable!
A Woman's Face (1941)
A sleigh-ride climax? Really?
Yes, Joan is great, and she looks quite luminous in several scenes. However, If you were hoping for the evil, scar-faced she-devil promised by the stills and advertising, don't hold your breath.
By the time you slog though the Nordic'regional' costumes and 'folkloric' dances midway through the film, you'll wonder why you thought this film was going to offer you any noir-ish thrills. Maybe as long as you are not led-astray to think you are getting a film with any real noir-qualities besides being black and white, perhaps you won't be as disappointed as I was.
For me, the shift off to the hokey winter wonderland pretty well kills off any depth the film may have seemed to promise, as well as any realism or momentum to keep me interested.
But wait! Just when I was wondering how the VERY promising premise of the film could go so wrong, there is a high-speed sleigh-ride chase. Now *that's* different. Over-all, I see this film as an opportunity missed...
Il regista di matrimoni (2006)
Not unless you have no options
I generally love Italian cinema. I will forgive some pretensions for the sake of art. I watched at home - maybe the DVD transfer was the reason some scenes were so muddy and dark? This was a small part of the boredom that put me to sleep - worse was the lack of any compelling plot. Odd to note that the scene with the dogs which someone here wrote was "absurd and excessive" is actually a high point! OK there may be some interest in that this is a film about film making about films - with some filming in the film - but it it had been better shot, or had some characters of interest, it might have been worth the time it took to watch. But no. Mi dispiace per scrivere la triste verità...
Wonderful World (2009)
Each scene worse than the one before!
I am only writing a review because I cannot let stand the positive notices here. Someone else will come along and be floored that any 2 people could find this cliché fest anything but annoying. Unbelievable, dumb, trite, a hack. Pu-leeze, my wife & I sat through this because we could not believe how bad it was - but it just kept getting worse, right to the end! On the plus side the little girl who played the daughter was good. But nothing makes up for the pain of seeing Michael K. Williams - who was GREAT as Omar Little in The Wire - in this dreck- fest.
OK, don't believe me - rent this film, watch it - but don't say you weren't warned!
...ing (2003)
I wanted to like it, really I did
It started out very promising for the first 20 minutes or so. Lonely 'different girl' looking for her place in the world and the meaning of love. But the pace slowed and the content became ever more obvious and the music ever more annoying. Still I wanted to like it Even when we soon find that the girl has some unnamed, possibly fatal disease, I hung in there. I thought maybe my wife was enjoying it for the romantic element. But no, her reaction was the same as mine: this is bad and getting worse. Maybe it is a cultural thing as I say. A tearjerker is one thing, but to have outright BAWLING while the soppy music wails up - you need a strong stomach for saccharine to enjoy this film. I rarely write comments on IMDb, but felt I had to counterbalance the praise found here. This film is pretty awful, IMO.
