Marlon Wayans: God Loves Me (2023)
This was THE FUNNIEST comedy special Marlon Wayans has EVER DONE!
Let me first state that I'm an African-American & as funny as this special was...I find it very hard to believe that these negative reviewers are Black!
I agree with another reviewer here about the fact that the people giving this special negative reviews, OBVIOUSLY did NOT read the info about the content BEFORE watching...but had the NERVE to get on here giving him bad reviews! Such poor taste and bad form!
If you bother to READ it FIRST, the special's info section TELLS you what to expect beforehand, that the WHOLE special centers around his deep dive into Will Smith Oscar's slap of Chris Rock! Reading is fundamental people!
Wayans was witty, gut-bustingly funny & poignant, as he poked fun at ALL 3 of HIS FRIENDS...AND tied it back to himself, how he felt about the incident, PLUS how he felt about THEM from both a humerous & serious perspective, while simultaneously intertwining great nuggets of wisdom...IF the viewer wasn't too critical to miss them entirely. He was HILARIOUS, PERIOD! Bravo Mr. Wayans!
American Son (2019)
I found it helpful for my teenage African-American son.
Although this movie is not necessarily always believable in terms of the dialogue between the estranged couple, and it is also overrun with typical racial stereotypes...it does have merit in my opinion. I watched the movie with my husband and then I asked my 16 year old son to watch it for these purposes only: to illustrate and bolster what I have taught him about society and issues of color, about some members of law enforcement, about choosing carefully the company you keep, following the crowd versus leading yourself even when it's not popular to do so, communicating with us as his parents, and how every decision he makes has consequences. This movie really reiterated all of these points for my son, which superceded any lacking qualities of the script itself as a whole. For this reason alone, I give the film at least a B rating.
