The Sinner (2017)
First season is best
The first season is great, Jessica Biel is amazing, really loved her performance and the character writing was intriguing as the plot unravelled. Second season wasn't quite so engaging and felt a bit more fantastical and less believable. Third season seems to throw all caution to the wind and the detective goes full on moron - will do every unnecessary thing to make a twist in the storyline. Yet to try season 4, but I think there's a trend here.
Salting the Battlefield (2014)
Cast let down by the writing and direction
The cast were great for the whole trilogy as well as their characters and backstories but they were completely let down by the unnecessary need to employ over-dramatic screenwriting far more befitting a stage play. I see this a common thread in David Hare's writing, it just doesn't translate well to screen performances where there could be a lot more subtlety instead of hammering home some overly emotional dilemma, which if you look at the character situation logically often makes very little sense.
Arctic (2018)
Exceeded expectations
I was expecting a little bit of unbelievable plot lines or something a little too 'hollywood' but this was enjoyable and realistic to be believable with just the right amount of suspense. Not sure why the complaints about the ending it's a lot better than so many others! Mads acting on top form as well, especially the grunts and slurrs ;)
Bridgerton (2020)
Regency gossip-girl!?
Ok it definitely pushes socio-historic boundaries, which could have been interesting but come on - awful script and awful acting. Felt like a mix of twilight and gossip-girl with the unnecessary and weird gossiping, just cheapened the whole thing. It could have worked as a comedy with all the pomposity instead of trying to pull it off as something dramatic. I had a good laugh!
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Well that was underwhelming
More focus on the arctic journey and Augustine's past & relationship with Iris would have been been way more interesting than spending half the film (and I guess most of the budget) flying a spaceship through asteroid belts and hitting every possible scientific inaccuracy along the way.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Surprisingly good!
For a well re-hashed storyline this was inventive, silly, funny and actually well acted! Those that give a low rating must have expected a Shakespearean tragedy?! Don't take it too seriously! It's Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston after all...
The Crown: Moondust (2019)
Disrespectful
As others have said the simplification and misrepresentation of the astronauts characters in this episode to suit the narrative was in poor taste by the writers. Philip's unconvincing switch from awestruck of their achievement to sudden submission to the healings of faith was a bit convoluted and explicitly inaccurate. Think there's a saying: history doesn't lie..
Ghosts (2019)
Loved it
Very funny, immediately likened it to Spaced with the couple and new house theme, although definitely more child friendly - cheesy and cringey at times but thats just the nature of family friendly british comedy so no complaints at all. Great to see some proper creative character comedy being made again!
Roadkill (2020)
Nice cinematography
In general easy to watch, not as confusing as other political dramas, however that sometimes led to the writing feeling lazy in places. Cinematography and lighting was great for setting the scene of the dark underside of politics. I just wish it was developed a little more, couldn't it have been made into 10 parts to really show the full lead up to the ending?
Wisting (2019)
Nice visuals, no substance..
The cinematography and sets / locations are good to look at, on the surface it looks like a great Scandi thriller, but the screenwriting is totally bonkers - characters do stupid things for no reason whatsoever, apart from to make a tenuous link in the plot. Also every conceivable continuity error seemingly impossible to get wrong somehow made the final cut. I spent more time laughing in disbelief than experiencing any suspense from the plot. Heading in the right direction but big miss overall...
