Last and First Men (2020)
Inhumane Minimalism
Sadly this space shuttle never manages to take off. It's not even a Challenger case, it doesn't explode horrifyingly in the sky, it just lacks the power to brake gravity and lead us into the wow of time and space. The ambience of the soundtrack is great (turns out the director was a composer at first place), Tilda Swinton's voice is calm and dictating, photography is gloomy, but the visual spectacle as a whole isn't awe inspiring, the architecture presented is impressive to some extend but not otherworldy, the surrounding nature instead of making you feel a billion miles away makes you feel you are in Switzerland and the text is weak, it sounds like a message from a hundred years ago instead from a billion years ahead. When you have so few elements in a movie every one of them must have the strength of an iron fist. Every line, every frame, every pause must be an explosion. There are way too few moments of such strenth straggling to stand out in a sea of cosmic blabbering.
I am not sure if I am going to give a second chance to the movie but I am going to do something else. I 'll separate the audio file and I'll go to a remote place away from lights during the night time lay down and listen to it while watching the sky.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Silly revenge movie
I 'm a bit worried that people liked this film. Not because of the excessive violence (I have no problem with that) or the concept of revenge but because it lacks taste and it's ridiculously unrealistic. A psychopath that attacks in such a blunt careless way would be caught in a matter of hours. Evil is portrayed in the most dull, senseless way. If Devil is like this then the devil is a moron. Also the "revenge guy" is never in control of the situation. He avoids death by sheer luck and by extremely fast reflexes that he has borrowed from kung fu movies. This is no Old Boy, no Chaser and for sure no Memories of Murder. The only good thing about this movie is Choi Min-sik cold, lifeless stare. Avoid!
Marriage Story (2019)
Overloaded Melodrama
Packed with good performances and intensions.
I have doubts whether Noah Baumbach is a real person or a Woody Allen character that became a director. Marriage Story is tender and witty and a bit caricaturish.
Spirtokouto (2003)
Punch in the face
Not for the faint at heart. It is the ugly truth naked. Economides is a genre of his own. Brutal realism that takes no hostages. Cult and substential.
High Life (2018)
Alien
This is a unique film. It's a space expedition and like real expeditions contains dangers and misfortunes. For me the story didn't work. I think the director wasn't brave enough to make it clear that there is no story. There is just a fragmented reality of awe, loneliness, lust and stillness. A man and a baby in a spaceship, a perished crew, some experiments in the background, that's it. If the story was simpler it would be better. The filming on the other hand is very effective. It manages something special, to create an existential experience. This is what a sci fi film is supposed to feel like, alien. If you feel daring one night, if you don't want to watch another film in the autopilot, try it.
Godzilla (2014)
I feel sorry for the American cinema
It sounds bad but I really mean it. I left the cinema with a feeling of insult. I also left the cinema feeling that my wits had suffered a violent decline. This film is ridiculously bad. It's so bad that it makes Pacific Rim seem like a masterpiece. The script is so horrible that forces good actors to act badly. In two hours you have to see every movie cliché that exists. I won't get into details, I'll just notice that Gogdilla has nothing to do with Gareth Edwards 2010 Monsters. I don't blame him for that; we very well know that this is a producer movie. It's the toll of going from 800 k budget to 160 million. His only mistake was accepting to direct it but I understand that his check must have a lot of zeros at the end so I can't blame him for that either. This movie isn't bad because it lacks inspiration or talent, it is programmed to be bad, it's the recipe. Dark knight was the accident, this is standard procedure.
