Chiisaki yûsha-tachi: Gamera (2005)
Nice movie, to a point... But sold out to the kids eh?
After seeing the 90's Gamera films recently (ok, I got a lot to catch up on...) and thinking "Wow, these meet - and in some cases beat - some of the Godzilla films of the past 15-20 years, hope there's more on the way" I finally got a chance to see this, now that there's a DVD release with English subs. The story as a continuation from the last films makes some sense, thankfully, if you outright ignore the 'cliffhanger' end of "Revenge of Iris" aka Gamera 3.
I was enjoying it as a sort of cheap lighthearted affair with lots of character dead end developments, right up until "the children" were shoehorned en masse into the film as a plot device. (you'll see what I mean if you haven't already - big forehead slap and groan) It's not that I mind yet another Kaiju sell out (the big G certainly had his day) but after watching the Star Wars franchise got his way (and SW was just as big an influence on my childhood as Godzilla et al) it's just a little too disappointing.
And am I to understand they're going to make more of these sort? I hope not, but if so IMO there should be a progression of sorts back to the big bad turtle I love so well.
Shao Lin jiang shi (2004)
I'll give it 7 out of 10 for effort...
But the person here who merely copied over the PR blurb as a review should have it's pointy 'lil head checked :P
I wasn't expecting MR VAMPIRE 2004, and that's a good thing. This wasn't as nearly as good as it should have, even given the low budget treatment. Gordon Liu can only do so much to help this film. In comparison to any of the original Hopping Zombie films of the past, this doesn't hold a Joss stick - but if you are used to subtitled ATV or TVB series then this could be right up your alley.
Also, FYI: this is PART ONE of a two part series, even though little information to this effect has been found. Thus, there have been lots of reviews that mention the 'abrupt ending' as a turnoff...understandable.
Geung see dai si doi (2003)
That guy does NOT get it, disregard that warning!
It's obvious that the person with the negative view either expects a 'kung fu' film and didn't get it, or more likely never saw MR VAMPIRE...
In order to enjoy this film I should think a little background on both Chinese mysticism and Hopping Zombie films are in order.
I won't do either of the honors, but instead refer you to the Illuminated Lantern website where you can get at least a primer on both.
AFA the film goes, I gave it a 7 out of 10 as it's a little disjointed, and lacks the flow of any really good Hopping Zombie film. But hey, at least someone whipped one of these out in the 00's, ten years after the genre died out. Kudos to Tsui Hark for that!
