Hudson's Bay (1940)

Not bad.
13 December 2015
First of all, I tracked down this film because of the cast. This film boasts Vincent Price, Gene Tierney, Paul Muni, and Nigel Bruce, which sounds like a great treat. Unfortunately, the film fails them. You can see each of them struggling to bring this movie to life with each line they deliver, but it just isn't enough. Although I was happy to see these stars, the film in its entirety isn't worth watching for most.

The film tells the story of an Englishman from the courts of King Charles II, who is exiled to Canada, and meets up with fur traders in jail. He bands together with them to hatch a scheme that will get him back in good standing with the king and his friends back home. This involves a lot of hard work, and some meddling in their business by the French government in Canada who want their cut of the money. They find their way to England and explain to the king what their idea is. Eventually, he agrees to their plans, although there are still some squabbles and fights along the way. I wont tell how it ends, but it isn't hard to tell whether or not they succeed.

As you may have guessed by my description, this is a fictionalized account of the history of fur traders. If you aren't interested in Canadian, Indian, or American history of this time period, or maybe even if you are, this is going to be a boring movie to watch. Many times, there are scenes of exposition to explain what was going on in history at the time. Either that, or characters sit around and talk for a long time about laws, rules, and their future plans. There just isn't enough action for a film that is supposed to have adventure as well as history.

The only reason why I didn't give this film a lower score was the actors. They really tried their hardest. Even those who played the Indians and the French gave better performances than they needed to. I was happy to see that each nation was represented fairly as well. Other films around this time period might not have shown as much respect, or would have used stereotypical behavior. So, that was a plus.

Overall, it isn't one of the worst historical adventure films I have seen. It certainly isn't a good one either, unfortunately. Because it is stuck in that limbo of 'just okay' films, it's been forgotten about by audiences for a long time. I'm not saying that this is a forgotten gem we need to resurrect, but if you are a die hard fan of these actors, like me, you should check it out if you can.

Krampus (I) (2015)
8/10
Krampus is exactly what we need.
6 December 2015
I first heard of the story of Krampus from a Christmas episode of American Dad!, and I've been surprised that none of the reviews I watched online for this film mentioned that since it's the one of the only times Krampus is mentioned in pop culture. Perhaps now that this movie is out, we will hear more about him. I sure hope so, because this is the perfect Christmas tale for the kids and families out there. It's a story that we could all benefit from, in fact.

The film starts out by showing us the insanity that we all know as Christmas shopping. It's all about how materialism and family strife can wreak havoc on our emotions during holidays. The problems all trickle down to the children, who should really be enjoying and celebrating the season instead of getting caught up in the stress the adult deal with. So, our main character rips up his letter to Santa, and wishes for all of this to be over with.

Krampus, being the evil side of Christmas, grants the wish. The characters are slowly plunged into a horror story. Their Christmas story becomes a story of survival. Will they be able to get along for the sake of surviving Christmas?

There were only a few things that I really had a problem with. That's why it gets an 8 instead of a 9 or 10. The first reason comes from the fact that I am a serious horror fan, and felt disappointed at the lack of blood and gore in the film. That reason may keep some genre fans away, but also makes the film more accessible to the kid and family audience, whom the film is really for. The other problem I had with the film was with the editing during the scenes with Krampus' helpers, because it was quite jumpy and made it hard to see everything going on the entire time.

Again, this is a good movie. I highly recommend it as one of the best new family Christmas movies. Krampus is exactly what we need to balance out the holiday. This will definitely be remembered as more than just another holiday themed horror movie. It will, hopefully, become a staple for Christmas viewing.

A fun trip.
17 July 2015
I was initially fearful that this movie would be terrible, especially after finding out that it wouldn't be on the big screen. The idea of seeing David Spade starring in a big movie again really excited me too. It's been a long time, and I'm a big fan. So, I watched this movie as soon as I could online.

The movie is a fun trip through the mind of Joe Dirt set in a familiar story so it's easy to understand. If you hadn't seen the first film, you would have no problem seeing this one for sure. And if you have seen the first one, you'll enjoy seeing all of the characters from the first again in a different way. At the end of the day, Joe is a real down to earth guy who is always learning and growing, and that's what this movie is about.

It wasn't the perfect sequel, though. As others have noted, it was not a movie we really needed. The story of Joe Dirt could have ended with the first movie just fine. The first had a more original feeling story, whereas this movie is recycling the It's a Wonderful Life story again. Doing that makes it feel more like a long episode of a TV show, since so many shows have used that plot. Not to mention that there are a couple of gags that just weren't funny at all.

This definitely isn't the better movie, as Spade claims. But if you're interested in getting more insight into Joe Dirt's mind, you will enjoy it. I know I enjoyed the ride. There were more funny jokes and fun moments that fit right into the feel of Joe Dirt. Plus, it's free to watch right now, so why wouldn't you at least check it out?

Dragonwyck (1946)
10/10
one of my all time favorites
17 December 2013
This is one of my all time favorite movies! I know some people who don't think it's that great, but personally I love it. I read the book afterward, it's even better after you have watched the film because then you can imagine it with Vincent Price. If you're a fan of his, you need to see his performance in this movie. It's really the first time that he played the villain on screen, and he plays that villain so seductively that you fall in love with him even though you know he's the bad guy. Gene Tierney, who normally plays the smart, brassy female lead, in this film plays the naive young country girl. She's got spunk, but it's great to see a change of pace from her. She gives a phenomenal performance. So, again, this is a fantastic film, and I recommend it.

Different every time.
17 December 2013
I really liked this movie when I first saw it, it was different and amazing, it starred Bela Lugosi.... but then I saw other movies similar to it. After that, I saw the mst3k version of it. Eventually, I saw how unintentionally funny it was, as well as how cool I thought it was the first time around. It seems like whenever I see this movie I have a new opinion on it. Sometimes giving a film another chance lets you see the good or bad parts that you missed the first time. The film gets nine stars because of Lugosi's performance, the unique quality of the film, and for the mst3k version being so entertaining. I love Lugosi, and if you are a fan too, I recommend checking out this movie.

Fantasia (1940)

Beautiful animated music film
17 December 2013
Some people may find this movie to be boring because there is little to no dialog, and it doesn't have much of a story, but it is a classic motion picture, and I love it. The music accompanies the animation in such a beautiful way, and the animation is so cool, the part with the dragon is my favorite. The part with Mickey and the broomsticks is the most memorable sequence for most because he's the mascot for Disney. If you want to relax and listen to music while watching something, this is a fantastic movie. You don't even need to be a fan of classical music because the cartoons flow seamlessly with the music. If you want to see something unique, look no further than Fantasia.

It's got heart.
16 December 2013
Finally after all these years of hearing about this movie, and seeing clips from it in historical film documentaries, I finally watched it! And I really liked it too! The story is universal and still applies today, Jolson was great as the Jewish cantor's son who wanted to be a jazz singer instead of a cantor like his father. Of course this movie is famous for having bits of dialogue spoken, and they are spoken during the song sequences. This device is both really cool, and makes you wish the whole movie were a talky, but it also is kinda annoying at times too, as the transitions are a bit awkward. Overall, I really liked this movie, though, it's got heart.

Robin Hood (1922)
10/10
My favorite Robin Hood film
16 December 2013
The best Robin Hood movie I've ever seen! Fairbanks is perfect for the role, and I'm glad he played it. With his physical skills and sense of timing, he was able to pack the movie with action. He wrote it too, which is cool, I loved how we got to see how he became Robin Hood and what was going on in medieval times. I had never seen another Robin Hood movie do so much of that so well. (Whether or not it is historically accurate according to some of the others here. It's a bit of literature, so I don't think it matters that much.) The sets, costumes, and everything were really spectacular. I loved this movie, and as I said, it's my favorite Robin Hood film.

Best Phantom movie
16 December 2013
This is the second Phantom movie I've seen, the first was the 40s version, and I liked this movie a lot better. The story is clearer, the phantom (played by the incomparable Lon Cheney) is creepier both in his physical appearance and his general presence, and it's much more exciting. It does get to feel a little long towards the end, and the version I saw was over 100 minutes, but I hear there is a shorter version. At least in this one you don't have to listen to the opera singers. It's the perfect Phantom of the Opera movie for us opera haters. I didn't give it a ten because I think that it lagged a little, but overall, a really good movie, I enjoyed it and I recommend it to all the other film fanatics out there.

Dance, Wings, Kick, Dance Routine, Leg
16 December 2013
IMDb's keywords: Dance | Wings | Kick | Dance Routine | Leg describe the entire film. They're sorta spoiling the film themselves that way, but it's hard when a film is a short documentary. I gave this movie five stars because it is a mesmerizing spectacle of the early cinema. Yet, I didn't rate it higher because the mesmerizing spectacle wears off as the film goes on. You have to understand that this was not made to be a narrative film. It's only something to look at, and not even for the entirety of the film itself. So, I say, it's not enough to keep your interest, but it is worth looking at for a minute to see a bit of history.

Dust (VII) (2013)

Surprising.
2 October 2013
This short begins with a situation that appears typical to thriller films. Rickman's character is sketchy and stalking a mother and her young girl. The tension mounts and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what he was going to do. What happens will definitely surprise you. There was a great twist to this thrilling story. I really enjoyed it. If you are a fan of Rickman like I am, then you will be needing to see this. I was lucky enough to catch this at my city's film festival tonight. They really know how to pick them at the festivals. So, give 'em a chance! I don't know when IMDb is going to open this up to ratings, but I hope it's soon because I want to rate it!
